Hans Zimmer will return to score Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman

04.15.2014

After scoring all three films in Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy (along with James Newton Howard), composer Hans Zimmer is gearing up to return to the DC superhero world with BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. Zimmer, who is currently at work on Nolan's next outing, INTERSTELLAR, just supplied the score for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, but has his sights clearly set on bringing the noise to Zack Snyder's next entry in the MAN OF STEEL franchise (or is it the JUSTICE LEAGUE franchise? Who knows...), saying:

"We've already had a couple of chats, and once I finish the movie that I shall not talk about I will probably head over to where Zack is shooting his movie and just hang out a bit and see if we can come up with any ideas."

Zimmer is well aware of the pressure in revisiting the Batman world, as his THE DARK KNIGHT score is so ingrained with Nolan's universe. Creating a new theme for the Caped Crusader is certainly on his mind:

"That's my problem, that's my dilemma. I don't want to betray, if that's the right word, the Dark Knight movies. That was Christian, it was Christian's role. It's not just that it was nine years of our lives, so you want to stay honest and honourable to that period. So it's really about, 'Is there something else I can find that I haven't tapped into?' Which I don't know until I sit down with Zack."

As a lifelong fan of Zimmer's I'm happy to have him return to this universe, but I know some may feel trepidatious about it. There are those who feel weary of Zimmer's tunes and the composers he mentors, which I get to an extent, but ultimately Zimmer gets the job done and usually does a tremendous job. MAN OF STEEL fit the film exceptionally, moving away from John Williams classic and revered score, and creating something entirely new for the character of Superman. Zimmer definitely has his work cut out for him, though, as he's also got Wonder Woman's theme (and potentially more if the cameo rumors continue to stack up) to contend with. Let's hope the mix of characters don't distract from a succinct score.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN is set for May 6, 2016.

Extra Tidbit: Hans Zimmer's score for Ron Howard's race car flick Rush is some of his best work in years (including Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises). Give it a listen if you're looking for a great, undiscovered score (While you're at it, watch the movie as well. Great stuff).

I loved Zimmer's work in the TDK trilogy and Man of Steel. They added so much emotional power and heft to the action scenes and the quieter, character-based moments. I am so glad he's back.

Well....

I love Zimmer and pretty much all of what he's composed. However, I'm ready for a more Elfman type theme to return to our Dark Knight. I really wish they would use Shirley Walker's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm theme. I would fucking scream and tear up big time. Hans will still gives us something good, though. This is a collaboration of the two anyways.....

Man of Steel was proof a good score can sell a movie. I get why some don't dig Zimmer but his work there especially gave the flick the gravitas and emotion to carry you along with and embrace all the crazy explosions and mayhem.

Slightly off topic

I'm indifferent to this movie, and the score - but goddamn that prototype logo needs to go. I get hives just looking at it.

Zimmer is one of the best film composers BUT...

...as much as I liked his Dark Knight and Man of Steel themes, I can't say I loved those as much as Elfman's Batman or Williams' Superman. And now he's taking the mantle again from Elfman (and Horner) to score Spider-Man. I'm not sure it's good to have the same composer for THE three main superheroes in the movies...

Money talks.

Whoever his ghost composer cames up with this time, the result will be the same generic repetitive crescendo crap he's known for.

Zimmer was the best thing about Man of Steel. Period. Can't wait to hear some new and recurring themes. The Track, "What are you going to do when you're not saving the world" on the Man of Steel Soundtrack portrayed Cavill's Superman perfectly. Can't wait for more.

Glad to read he's back. His score for the Dark Knight was great and the score to Man of Steel was easily just as good if not better.

I feel too many people on this site are hating on this film too much before we see ANY amount of footage, photos, trailers, etc. I'm not criticizing, I just wish more people would give this film a chance before writing it off completely. I loved Man of Steel and I know I'm in the minority, but if these next couple of films follow that same great quality, I

You arent in the minority man. Youre in the majority. What we have here is a vocal minority. Just like any other good movie.

I'll give it a shot if you give the Fantastic Four reboot a chance.

Brace yourselves for a lot more "dun dadadadadadadada dun dadadadadadadada dun dadadadadadadada". His work gets the job done and I did like a good portion of the Man of Steel soundtrack, but it can be very repetitive and generic.

Hans Zimmer does amazing work. I'm quite confident he can adapt from his Nolan's Batman scores.
