Harold and Kumar directors take on American Pie 4

Just the other day it was announced that Kal Penn was ready to begin work on HAROLD AND KUMAR 3 and that filming would begin this summer. What gave me pause was the note that the studio was currently looking for directors to take on the script from HAROLD AND KUMAR creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. Why would they look for a director when Hurwitz and Schlossberg quite capably directed the second film? Turns out we have an answer.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg have signed on to write and direct AMERICAN PIE 4, the Universal relaunch of the once-lucrative franchise. The fourth film will bring back all the major cast members from the successful films like Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Alyson Hannigan instead of focusing on Eugene Levy and Stifler’s second cousin twice removed (or whatever they were up to).

As it turns out, Hurwitz and Schlossberg were scheduled to direct HAROLD AND KUMAR 3 but when the opportunity came in to shepherd the new PIE movie, they finished writing the H&K script and left the project to work with Universal. To replace them, New Line has hired Todd Strauss Schulson to direct A VERY HAROLD AND KUMAR CHRISTMAS.

While the storyline for AMERICAN PIE 4 is being kept under wraps, Seann William Scott told reporters at the COP OUT junket that the current plan was to have it centered around a high school reunion.
