Harrison Ford discusses Cowboys & Aliens, and still hates Star Wars

11.09.2010

While out promoting his new comedy MORNING GLORY, screen legend and occasional grump Harrison Ford is, as expected, getting asked about other movies both past and future.

It sounds like he's pretty happy with COWBOYS & ALIENS, and had a good time working with co-star Daniel Craig and director Jon Favreau on next summer's big western/sci-fi mashup. As he tells Access Hollywood: "I had thought maybe I’d never get to make another cowboy movie. They’re so rare these days, but this was a really intriguing project and I think it’s gonna be very exciting." (Ford's last Western was 1979's THE FRISCO KID.)

"It’s a real cowboy movie, looks like a cowboy movie, feels like a classic cowboy movie, and then things happen, and then it goes back to being a cowboy movie with this added element," Ford said. "And I think it’s the kind of film that there’s a real broad audience for. I’m very excited for it. I think it’s going to be good."

Ford also reiterated his interest in returning for a fifth INDIANA JONES movie (as usual: "If there’s something that the three of us can agree on then I’d love to do it"), which isn't surprising since he's obviously fond of the character.

The same apparently can't be said for the Corellian smuggler that made him famous.

On David Letterman, he referred to his charming space rogue as "Ham Yoyo" and waved off STAR WARS' iconic status with a squirming "Yeah, yeah" (watch below). Of course, discussing the trilogy has long made Ford reluctant, dismissive or just uncomfortable  -- Movieline has even collected an interesting group of older Ford interviews as evidence.

Extra Tidbit: Speaking of STAR WARS, it seems that the non-Carbonite twist ending of EMPIRE was actually spoiled way back in 1978 by loose-lipped (or prescient) David Prowse.

Star Wars is my favorite movie...

and whatever Harrison thinks about it nowadays is his right. Bottom line is that he was awesome in all of them, and seems like a legit dude who doesn't feel the need to be serious when talking about his past movies.

Although, I agree he should be respectful of Star Wars fans who respect him in kind. Otherwise, you're being a douche.

Fake grumpy

Watching this clip, it seems that Ford is just joking about everything. He's playing it grumpy, just like his character in the movie, that must be why he chose to do it : he just likes to play the grumpy man. But actually he looks like having fun out of it and plays with the audience's reactions.
Hope to see him as Indiana Jones one last time. Even if the last one wasn't that great, it was still very entertaining for me.

no doubt. that's what I said too. I think he's just pretending to hate the character. He even smiles when he says Ham Yo-Yo.

Serious Actor

I think Ford sees himself as a serious actor, which is why he dismisses Star Wars. But if he doesn't view that role as serious acting that doesn't explain why he loves Indiana Jones so much, maybe because the movies were all about that character and he wasn't part of an ensemble? Maybe that's really what bugs him about Star Wars, the fact that he wasn't the main focus of the films.

I personally think he just likes screwing with people. You saw him smile when he said Ham yo-yo. I think he gets a kick out of making people think he hates the character. It is interesting that he's so hip to keep making Indiana Jones movies though. I guess after the last one wasn't as well received he wanted to redeem himself, though I don't think it was his fault the film wasn't well received.

agreed..I blame the last film on Lucas. Lucas is long washed up and needs to sit back and retire. I had heard that Spielberg had a great script for the 4th indy movie but lucas poo-poo'd it and we got Indiana Jones meets Aliens

Harrison Ford was not the problem with Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. I enjoyed the movie but I can understand why some fans felt let down. Still he was good in it.

He can say what he wants

People keep saying he wouldn't be near as successful without star wars but its not like star wars made all the other actors in it really successful, in fact they all pretty much bombed out. Ford did well because he's a good actor. It's been 27 years since return of the jedi, i can't imagine how many times he's been asked questions about star wars.

He's been sleep walking through every character he plays post Fugitive in 1994. Han Solo is not only my favorite Star Wars character he's my favorite Harrison Ford character and deserves a lot more respect. Also, after Crystal Skulls Indianna Jones came off way worse than Han Solo did in Return of the Jedi.

Indiana Jones, the entire series, would never happened without the success of Star Wars.

I GET THAT FANBOYS CAN BE ANNOYING...

but he should at least be little more respectful cause it did put him on the map and long after he's dead people will still remember Han Solo, he could still be a carpenter somewhere building decks in the hot sun instead of a rich movie star so quit bitchin' about your fans and sign their lightsabers or whatever the Hell they want you to, you know how many young actors would kill for a legend making role like Han Solo? Is Morning whatever really such a great movie, it'll be forgotten the week

Is Morning whatever really such a great movie, it'll be forgotten the week after it opens and end up at the bottom of $5.00 bins right next 13 Going on 30, package torn and loose disc that rattles in the case when you pick it up to move it outta your way. I'm not even that big a Star Wars fan either I just hate when actors get all snobby and big for their britches, you could be shoveling human shit for a living somewhere pal so be respectful of the nerds who paid for tickets to your movies that allow you to live in that big fancy house and bang supermodels, or Calista Flockhart if skeletons are your thing.

I don't blame him.

I mean, this guy has accomplished a LOT more than just starring in some outer space films years ago, and is a fellow human being with feelings, yet he's probably been bombarded with stupid statements & questions from Star Wars lunatics every fucking time he's gone outside for the last 25 years. You'd have to be pathetic and/or insane to not get tired of and pissed off over that shit. People should just respect the clear wishes of one of the greatest actors of our time and just STFU about it

Ford's the man and can't wait to see how kick ass Cowboys and Aliens is going to be. As for Ford being tired of Han Solo and Star Wars, I can understand him being tired of probably answering the same questions over and over from us fans, but that's only Han Solo was a space PIMP.

if it weren't for Star Wars, he might not be nearly as famous as he is now.. He should be much more grateful.
