Harrison Ford out 8 weeks due to ankle injury, Star Wars 7 filming continues

06.16.2014

Last week we heard the unfortunate news that Harrison Ford was injured on the set of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. At the time, the extent of the injury was unknown. Now, we know that a hydraulic door on the Millennium Falcon set broke the actor's ankle and he was then airlifted to a local hospital.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the injury will require approximately 8 weeks to heal, putting the already huge production in a quandary. Rumors have put Ford's character of Han Solo front and center in the new film which may be difficult to work around if he cannot run or participate in major sequences. The studio is insisting that the injury will not delay production at all which means they could be changing the shooting order of the film or it may just be that Ford doesn't need to do much standing for most of his scenes.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII has been in the limelight since it was announced during Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm and has not left the news since. Once the full cast was announced, it was only a matter of time before set images and news tidbits leaked out. It would have been impossible not to reveal Harrison Ford's injury, so we will just have to wait and see how and if it impacts the final product.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

Temple of Doom's injury was longer, I believe.

He was out with a back injury on Temple of Doom for longer than that, I think. I guess this also means he's more than a cameo.

I doubt he'll actually see any of our well wishes but Ford is one of my all time favorite actors so I'll add a "Get Well Sir." You have thoroughly entertained several generations of movie fans and all you asked from us was the price of a movie ticket. You owe us nothing. So when I say take an easy, I don't mean retire, but do take an easy. I remember when I broke my ankle (the stereotype is false-white men CAN jump, we just can't land) it was a hell of a healing process-and I was a teenager!

Can you imagine dealing with this in your 70s? Anyway, keep up the good work, Mr. Ford, looking forward to seeing you as the legend that is Han Solo again soon (and perhaps Indiana Jones one more time, hint hint).

Physician: Mr. Ford, your ankle is broken.

Harrison: I know.

He was out of commission for a stretch on Temple of Doom as well, and I think on Raiders, the wheel of the Flying Wing actually ran over his leg. Get better soon Han!

Remember, Ford was out for some time (I can't remember how long, exactly) while filming "Temple of Doom" due to a back injury, and it didn't affect production too much. And he was THE star of that. With "Star Wars" there's the benefit of having an ensemble. Even if his part is significant, they could easily use the "Temple of Doom" solution and use a stuntman for all the wide shots, then shoot Ford's close-ups when he returns.

Lots of speculation in this article. Being out weeks for an ankle injury doesn't necessarily mess up anything. Obviously they'll adjust the shooting schedule, but the assertion Ford will have a hard time with all the running scenes in the movie hinges on a big assumption Ford had a lot of running scenes in the first place. I mean, while he may be front and centre, it doesn't mean he is necessarily spending the entire movie running around with everyone else.

Sorry to hear that Ford is hurt. So... You think they'll push this back to Memorial Day weekend 2016?
