Harrison Ford to co-lead Star Wars: Episode VII alongside three young stars

May. 9, 2014by: Alex Maidy

We all know the original stars of our favorite space opera are back in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, but sources are confirming that one of the three actors will have a much more substantial role than the others. Jedi News is reporting that an article in the latest Entertainment Weekly states that Harrison Ford's part as Han Solo will be a "co-lead" role alongside the three new stars of the franchise.

This anonymous source could be full of shit, but the news seems to be substantiating rumors we have been hearing for months. Check out the breakdown of the confirmed news below.

- Casting began in earnest in January.

- At press time, several roles have yet to be filled, including a major female lead.

- Michael Arndt's initial script has been significantly overhauled by Abrams and Kasdan, which led to a delay in casting.

- Hamill, Fisher, and Ford had been secured to return for Episode VII before the Disney sale in 2012.

- Hamill, Fisher, and Ford will all have "significant" roles.

- Han Solo is considered a co-lead alongside 3 of the younger actors.

Rumors previously stated that Harrison Ford only agreed to come back if Disney would make another INDIANA JONES movie.  While that is still likely, it also seems that making Han Solo a significant part in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII was part of the rewrites done by J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan.  How much has been changed and how much truth there is to this news will likely not be revealed until the movie hits theaters next year, but it also seems like everything related to STAR WARS: EPISODE VII has been developing for almost two years now.

Could this also lend creedence to the possibility that Han Solo will be killed off in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?  I am speculating, but Harrison Ford has not been shy about his age playing a factor in his involvement with a new trilogy.  Could Bad Robot and Lucasfilm be planning to shock audiences and kill Solo off, opening the door for Mark Hamill to take center stage in the eighth film?  That remains to be seen.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max Sydow, and Daisy Ridley hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

at his age he still has more charisma than actors 1/4 his age. I would love to see him in all three new sequels. I want him to participate as long as he is able.

I get chills just thinking of the moment we see Han on the big screen again. The fun thing about hearing these rumors is seeing all the people whining already that the movie isn't being made the way they "envisioned" it so they predict an automatic failure.

Until I see a preview I'm finding it hard to get excited for this movie.

Harrison Ford has seen his Box Office clout dwindle from his Box Office heydays. He is no longer a sure fire bet at the Box Office. He needs Star Wars 7 career wise as much as Star Wars 7 needs him to get the older fans to see this.I wonder if Harrison was still a Box Office star, not just a famous name,if he`d sign on for this.

You're right about his diminishing star, but he doesn't 'need' anything, he's set for life from everything else, though he knows this will make bank....

Han in 8, Leia in 9

before GL started denying there was an EP 7,8.9,( he said the press made it up) he said in an interview that he told Mark Hamil that Luke would do a turn to the dark side just like Anakin. That's what the next 3 will be about. ( he turned to the dark side twice in Jedi, once when the Emperor told him to strike him down, and the other when he wailed on Vader with his lightsaber, he just never took that final step that was needed - killing the emperor or killing vader. Max Von Sydow will die

Max Von Sydow will die in 7 ( just like Obi Wan in Star Wars) My guess that Han will die in 8 and Leia will die in 9 - giving her life to bring Luke back from the dark side. ( she'll get a state funeral just like her mother) OR ( Leia liked to dress up like her dad and change her voice - the bounty hunter Boush) she goes into mourning after Han dies, goes to the dark side and Luke brings her back) No idea where the new cast would fit in

I hope Ford is less grumpy in this. I think Han in his old age would be somewhat difficult to get along with, but not necessarily a typical curmudgeon. Can't wait to see him back in that iconic outfit and at the controls of the Falcon alongside Chewie. I know the EU isn't being considered canon but if there's anyone from the old guard who I'd be okay with being offed, it would be Chewbacca. I love the big walking carpet as much as the next guy but I think the impact the loss of this best friend

No lead female yet////WHO CARES?

I'm not anti-female, but why do they feel like they absolutely need a female lead? That role is filled already, her name is Carrie Fisher. I don't care how old she is. She's the lead. I'm sick of this politically correct shit where now-a-days film makers feel the need to cater to female equality. Nope. Not me. Females ruin most films when it comes to sci-fi or horror. I like Carrie Fisher, she's a strong woman. I don't see the need to add some young pretty valley girl to the mix just

Wow!!!

Harrison Ford is officially co-leading Episode VII??? WOW!!!!!!! Oh wait, nevermind. I clicked on the article and realized this was just an anonymous source making this claim, so there's really no basis in fact for this headline.

If he does die, hoping that both he and the Falcon go out in a blaze of glory. He tells Chewie to leave, but Chewie won't abandon his friend and they both go down together.

One of the reasons the original trilogy worked so well is due to finding the balance for all 3 characters. Giving one a larger part seems like a mistake to me. Sure, we all know Ford is the most popular actor of the 3, but I still think Hamill and Fisher should have the same size role. If anything, I would think Luke Skywalker would have the larger part.

I have a feeling that since he has a bigger part then Hamill and Fisher in this, this new film will be Han Solo's 'swan song'. I just hope if this is the case, he goes out in a badass way, unlike Mace Windu.

Either way Han will die

Either on screen, as was his original desire, or amidst the flaming wreckage of this flick. Han, the swashbuckling scoundrel, will now have his last memory on screen be that of a grumpy old man. Awesome.

You know, honestly considering all the bad mouthing he has done about the character of Han since Jedi and the overall lack of giving a shit Harrison Ford pushed me as a fan to the point of not really caring if he was in this or not. Great he's the lead and great we are gonna see Han again but am I jumping for joy not really the most I can give is two thumbs up.

What happens in a movie that hasn't even been filmed yet "remains to be seen." You don't fucking say. Cutting edge reporting there.

The moment I heard that Ford was the co-lead I automatically deduced that meant he is likely to die in the movie as well. it can't mean anything else, can it?
