Harrison Ford to hunt replicants once more?

02.06.2012

     Blade Runner banner

I would advise that when you share this with your friends you provide the caveat that it is very much a rumor only. As in, it comes with a grain of Kosher Salt bigger than the boulder that crushed Aaron Ralston's arm in 127 HOURS.  Now that I've said that...

Ridley Scott and Harrison FordHere's what we knew until now:
1) A Blade Runner "reinvention" will happen.
2) Ridley Scott returns to direct, very possibly once PROMETHUS is done.
3) It has already been established by Alcon Entertainment producer Andrew Kosove that the new film would have absolutely nothing to do with Harrison Ford's character of Deckard.

And here's the new information:
"Harrison Ford has entered into [very] early talks to join the new BLADE RUNNER.  While this is still very early stages and it is quite possible that things won't work out the obvious implication is that what we are looking at is not a reboot but a direct sequel to the original."
Now that could of course not be the case - perhaps Ford will show up for five minutes to pass his mantle and wisdom along to another Replicant hunter in his own dour way and then proceed to lose himself in the fog of the future.  Who knows? I don't.  I would normally say that we'll surely hear more soon, but considering how Ridley Scott seems to have been trying to beat J.J. Abrams at his own secretive game with the marketing for PROMETHUS it's possible that we'll have no idea what's going on until the film suddenly releases one day.

So there you have it.  One heaping serving of rumor with a side of speculation to sate you this morning.  Do with it and this gruffly handsome face as you will:

Harrison Ford in black and white

Extra Tidbit: Blade Runner is one of Christopher Nolan's very favorite films. I don't know which version though.

If Harrison is going to have anything to do with it (which I doubt) then they better hurry cause he ain't gettin any younger.

This fills me with all sorts of worry. Iím a tremendous fan of both Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford, but the idea of remaking or reimagining one of the most iconic films in cinematic history makes me feel very conflicted. Would I love more of Blade Runner? Sure I would, just like an alcoholic would like another drink, but when I think about it honestly, I really would only want this if it is completely uncompromising, well scripted and does nothing to diminish the original. That's a lot to

If he does a Prometheus... if he drags the story far enough away from the old movie... then it will be fine.

If it's just Bladerunner II, or Bladerunner Rebooted, then it's dangerous.

Harrison in the movie...

... opens up all sorts of possible plot twists.
- He's Deckard, somehow a unique Replicant that can grow old.
- He's another Replicant from the same batch with the same DNA. Multiple Deckards. An extension on the theme of "Who Am I? Are my Memories Real?"
- He's the real human that Deckard was based off (The Alien 3 twist)
Games can be played with Harrison Ford coming back.
Oh, and Sean Young?

I'd love to see another story told in the Blade runner universe but it was to be utterly devoid of the Deckard and Batty characters.

By bringing and allowing Harrison Ford to be back is special and respectful. It leads you to believe that now since Ford has aged he could very well be the aged Blade Runner, Deckard.

If Prometheus turns out to be half as badass as I think it will, I can definitely get on board for another film if Scott is attached. I trust Ridley to give it the respect that so many fans have for it and give it the proper treatment.

My "Final Cut" would have included at least SOME of the voiceover work, but for me, the best way to see the film is watch it WITH the voiceover, then without. You get the extra tidbits in the first viewing but don't have them intruding on the beauty of other scenes with subsequent viewings.

I'm down.

But I mean if he appears at Deckard, that kind of ruins the theories that he was a replicant.
-edit-
Ah, I see someone else thought of that too.

Can Ford take over Bryant's place? I could buy that. Embittered old pro, cynical and heartbroken over his replicant lover's death some thirty years earlier, now calling the shots. Or would that role go to Edward James Olmos?

This could really work if it brings back all the right ingredients from the original. Although, if Ford was now a mentor / side character instead of the lead, things could be all the more interesting. Throw someone new and talented in there and we could have a pretty solid follow-up.

So long as it's not just a retread of the first film.

Too bad Scott wasn't making these kind of movies in the 90s instead of GI Jane, White Squall and 1492. I'll give Thelma and Louise a pass.

Bad Idea!

If Ford is in this movie it destroys the mystery behind the first as to whether or not Deckard was a replicant himself. I'd much prefer Ridley take the movie in the same direction as he did with Prometheus which has links to the original Alien, but it's a completely original story.

How does him being in this movie destroy that mystery? Care to elaborate?

Replicants have a short lifetime and they don't age. If Deckard was a replicant he would have expired by now. Despite Scott's insistance this was the case with Deckard, I never bought into it. He lacked the agility of a replicant when facing off against Roy Batty. Plus he and Bryant had a pretty apparent history together.

I see, thanks for the explanation. It's been so long since I've seen the movie, those details slipped my mind. I understand your concern.

Interesting...

So what you are saying is this new Blade Runner might only have the DNA of Deckard in it.

I think I'm the only person on the planet that actually prefers the original over all the different Director's Cuts.
