Has Bryan Singer cut Emma Frost and the Hellfire Club from X-Men: Days of Future Past?

Mar. 18, 2013by: Alex Maidy

With all of the casting going on for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, the only villain returning from FIRST CLASS has been Michael Fassbender's Magneto. Absent have been January Jones' Emma Fronst, Zoe Kravitz' Angel, and Alex Gonzalez' Riptide. So, the group known as The Hellfire Club appear to have been excised almost entirely for the sequel. So, the question needs to be asked: is this a sequel to X-MEN 3 or to FIRST CLASS?

Based on reports from The Coventry Telegraph, the screenplay for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST previously acted as more of a sequel to FIRST CLASS but has changed into something else. Was it truly Matthew Vaughn's intention to meld the two X-MEN franchises together like this or is this the doing of Bryan Singer and the executives at Fox? I want so badly to feel good about all of this casting, but I am really getting the strong feeling that there is going to be way too much going on in this movie.

I have been reading many of the comments on this site from you guys and your complaints about the purity of DAYS OF FUTURE PAST in relation to the comic book story arc. While I have no problem taking a story from the print world and transforming it on the big screen, I am beginning to wonder if Singer is trying too hard to link the two timelines. I mean, it worked for STAR TREK because the two timelines are parallel to one another, not the same universe. Could DAYS OF FUTURE PAST be setting up the two X-MEN franchises to collide, battle the enemy, then return to their proper period? Does that mean if we go back to the 1960s era and everything is set back that the FIRST CLASS squad will therefore be eliminating the future timeline? My brain just exploded.

I guess we will have to wait until July 18, 2014 to find out.

I'll wait to see what my friend's say about it after they've seen the sneak preview (they work in the industry) before I'll even think of wasting my money on this one.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

good. January Jones (bad actress...didnt realize she was in American Wedding), Zoe (not a bad actress) had a bad character, and Riptide (who really wanted him to come back? I mean really...) should all be cut. I am happy with this. With the time travel element I am hoping it fixes it all. Those 3 can go to hell

I Ain't Complainin'

Let me start with stating the obvious; January Jones was crap. Ok, on with the rest. The Hellfire Club, as portrayed in First Class, was all Kevin Bacon. As he will not be involved in the sequel, why should the miscellaneous members be asked to return? As this film will be taking the best elements of both film universes, why fill it with characters no one will remember, or worse, care about? So, I can see why leaving The Hellfire Club on the cutting room floor is the way to go. Also, Halle

Can't say I'll miss January. She brought absolutely nothing to what was an otherwise solid XMen movie. Zoe Kravitz' mutant was really little more than a setpiece, and I honestly don't even remember Riptide. So suffice it to say, I'm not crying at this news.

Good choice

Without Kevin Bacon as Shaw the Hellfire club would have been lame as hell. Emma Frost is a great character but they ruined that potential when they cast January Jones who has the personality of a paper bag. Fairy girl was such a lame creation and the less said about Riptide the better. First class was a great film (far better than I expected) but without Kevin Bacon, Fassbender and McAvoy to carry it would have sank. It seems to me that Singer is taking the best parts of First Class

I enjoyed First Class - it was by far the best X-Men film we've had to date. As such I was a little unsure about Singer coming back, and his casting decisions have done nothing to encourage me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I'm half expecting this film to be a massive balls up. Hopefully it won't be.

Big Deal

Could care less if those characters come back for this movie. Emma Frost could have been worthwhile to bring back if January Jones had played her better, but alas, she fucked it up. So not worth Singer's time to bring her back. As for the rest of the points made in the article, I agree. This movie is quickly approaching that line between ambitious movie storytelling and completely off the rails. I mean the story itself is all right there in the comics so it should be easy enough to adapt,

But if the movie is going to be more of an X3 type of story with a bunch of scenes strung together to put as many mutant cameos as possible, than Vaughn had better step in an straighten out Singer's script a little bit.

good riddance

the hellfire club was a weak counter to the XMen and without Sebastian Shaw, they would have been bood off the screen (though i really dug Azazel). riptide and angel or whatever were a snoozefest and january jones managed to make one of my fav mutants awful (boobage aside). and anyway, the Hellfires werent in Days of Future Past. it was the Brotherhood.

I'll be honest, I think X-Men 2 was the only good one of the whole bunch. I thought it was damn near perfect, actually. The rest felt like a couple of very good moments wrapped around messy films. I've wanted Singer to come back for years and get the franchise back on the level of X2 and that's what this feels like to me, righting the wrongs of a franchise that's taken too many liberties with character and story. I'm excited.

Consider this...

Bryan SInger & Matthew Vaughn both wrote First Class and Future Past. So we know it's not going to be a shit show. Will it be the best of the series? Probably not...But could be one of the better onces. Still be worth a 18 dollar movie ticket.

The only bummer is that Azazel won't be coming back (he was one of my favorite baddies from First Class apart from Shaw, but he won't be coming back for obvious reasons). Would be nice to see a showdown between him and Nightcrawler.

Azazel and Nightcrawler could do a Darth and Luke. Days of . . . is a time travel movie. Of course, some fans might get upset if certain characters "implausibly" meet--in a time travel movie that's re-writing everything anyway.

Also...

Didn't January Jones get knocked up by Matthew Vaughn during the shoot of First Class while Vaughn was married to Claudia Schiffer and Jones was dating Jason Sudekis? That might play a role in why she's not coming back. Don't get me wrong, they're both equally to blame, but Vaughn is still involved in Days of Future Past and his wife (who stayed with him for some reason) probably doesn't want Ms. Jones around.

No!!!

No!!! I wanted a sequel to First Class not a prequel to the original trilogy!!! I liked the trilogy ( yes even the third one) but they put a bow on that series and ended. I think it should have stayed ended. I don't mind having some cameos from the other movies but I didn't want this to be a straight prequel! And plus January jones was ridiculously hot in first class and I'm gonna miss her!!!

There's no news in this article

There's no reason to panic either. Yes, the movie COULD be over-crowded but it's not impossible to make movies with a large cast work if the director knows what its main story is. We know one group of people (or one character) will travel through time; that's the main storyline. Every other characters (at least half of the cast) aren't main characters and should be treated as such.

This is the best option. Everyone knows the best part of First Class was Fassbender, McAvoy and Bacon. I don't know how you make a sequel to first class without it seeming like another x-men film, but this time in the past and without a lot of everyone's favorite characters. I think "bridging" the trilogy with first class is the best thing they can do in terms of story. Besides, Angel and Azazel were mostly copies of x-men characters anyway (basically having the same powers of Angle and

Azazel is actually Nightcrawler's father. I was hoping that this sequel would deal with his relationship to Mystique but I guess it won't.

This is what I was afraid of. I'll still reserve judgement till I see it because X2 was great, but First Class was even better. Unfortunately the polish that First Class had is disappearing under Singer's bloated cast. Why bring back previous cast members so soon when there's tons of fan faves untouched.

i can write articles like this too....
'Has Bryan Singer decided to recast Nightcrawler? I don't know.'
As we know, Alan Cumming has said he won't be back as Nightcrawler...but that doesn't mean the character won't be. Will someone else take the role? Or maybe not? Who will it be? Will it be anyone? If anyone? I think maybe or maybe not, if at all.

I see your point. However, these speculative articles function as heuristics, prompts for discussion. The author presents a possibility or an idea; then, about forty nuts from the peanut gallery shell out their ideas in a discussion thread. This article's Strike Backs exemplify the process. Say goodbye to First Class

It's now apparent that Singer is removing as much of First Class as he can in an effort to reclaim the franchise. First Class was the best of the X Men films and now that SInger is attached all the effort to improve the series has been for nothing. The film ended (Spoiler) with Magneto breaking Emma Frost out of her cell thus creating the first Brotherhood, If the character doesnt return it makes the whole point of First Class moot. It's important to note that Singer was involved with First Class as well and is co-credited for the story. There's no sign things would've been that different with Matthew Vaughn directing if Singer was still responsible for the story on this film.

Her portrayal of Emma Frost sucked even though she looked hot as hell.

Without Bacon, there is no point to have the Hellfire Club back in this. Even though it makes the ending of X-Men First Class a little confusing.

No offense but this seems more like a typical fanboy rant than an actual article, like Arrow said there is no story here. I am ok with the direction X-Men is going & I will wait for a trailer to pass anymore judgment. Just glad to see X-Men back in Singer's hands where it should have never left.

Even though Singer is putting a lot of elements in this movie, I have a good feeling it's going to work out in the right direction. Saying that, I'm glad January Jones and the rest of the Hellfire is not being brought back. With the amount of story lines to use, plus the one they've taken in this sequel of sorts, its exciting what new we'll see. I'm sure Vaughn had a heavy hand in this script and that it'll deliver based on Singer tweaking it here and there.

Meh

For starters, January Jones was pretty terrible as Emma Frost so I could care less if she was in it or not. I'm also at a loss as to why people here complain about the bloated casting for an X-Men film but no one seems to chime in regarding the horribly sounding The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We have no idea as to what capacity any of these characters are going to be in the primary story. Not to mention that this is X-Men which even in comic form is packed full with mutants, good and bad alike, so why should the films be any different? Aside of course, from having a competent writer/director who has proven himself with this franchise three times already, but I digress. Going back to Frost however, I'd prefer to remove Jones and bring the character in as much older version and bring in Singer's original casting choice for X3 (had he directed it) with Sigourney Weaver.
