Has The Amazing Spider-Man 3 been pushed back until 2017?

Jun. 13, 2014by:

In a report on yesterday's news about the rumored schedule for Warner Bros. and DC's comic book movies, AICN revealed this little tidbit of information.

I have been told that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 has been moved to an undetermined date in 2017.

It's been just about a year since Sony first announced release dates for the third and fourth Spidey flicks (June 10, 2016 and May 4, 2018), and since then VENOM and SINISTER SIX spin-offs have been announced as well. However, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hasn't performed as well at the box office as Sony had hoped, and reviews from critics and fans have been very mixed.

While this isn't an official announcement, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony does want to take the time to rethink their future plans for the franchise. I'm not saying they're going to scrap whatever plans they might have for the third movie, or do another reboot, but perhaps Sony wants to make sure they are moving forward with the right strategy for their Spidey movies. Also, one of the biggest complaints from most critics and fans about THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 was the villains, so maybe Sony is also getting cold feet about doing a SINISTER SIX spin-off.

I do think it's a little odd there hasn't been that much news about THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 or the spin-offs since the release of the second movie. But this is only a rumor for now, and we'll have to wait and see if Sony does push THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 back until 2017, or move forward as planned with the third movie.

There are so many great super heroes . No need to squeeze Spidey so hard.
How about a reboot of League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, an Elektra remake, a Lobo movie, a Deadpool movie, another Blade. And how about another Darkman from Raimi.....?

Sounds logic, summer 2016 is full of superhero flicks. Cap. America and X-Men are now everyone's favourite after the last two installments, and add the Batman V Superman movie to the mix. There's no room for another superhero movie, and Spidey is already going down. Three superhero movies per summer is OK. Move it to november or december 2016, or even sometime early in 2017. Hide Spidey for some time, people need some rest.

I have a feeling that Marvel/Disney will move 'Captain America 3' to that date.

Captain America 3 or Batman V(s.) Superman - who takes the date?

Cap 3 should move, they can't compete with Batman vs Superman and win. It would be a good and smart move for Disney (Marvel) to move into that date.

yeah, I mean Batman V Superman - regardless of what you think of the writers, director etc, will be a fucking smash mega hit. It's the first live action appearance of these guys together and both characters have like 20 years on the marvel characters - no one can beat the popularity of Batman and Superman combined!

Reboot this reboot.

*Sigh* Are we ever going to get a proper Spider-Man that captures the heart and emotion of the Raimi films while still managing to do some sorely-needed updating and modernizing of the character? Because the TASM movies certainly aren't the answer. If people weren't already thinking this after TASM 1 was released, I'm glad they sure are now that the TASM 2 debacle is fresh in everyone's minds. Which means we'll probably keep seeing TASM movies and Sinister Six spin-offs every single year until Garfield's too old for the role. Damn shame.

I was actually surprised by ASM2 but that's probably bc I had no expectations for it being good whatsoever. But I'm getting scared about the word reboot. I agree with you but can't they just make a sequel with new cast and crew? Please, no more Spider-Man origins. If any, take the Incredible Hulk route.

these newer films have far more heart and emotion than all of Raimi's combined. They are far Superior versions of Spider-Man.

Shonk. Can't agree with you at all. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I just can't respect yours. Raimi's original trilogy is superior in every aspect possible.

Yeah, as others have said, that's an incredibly strange thing to say ShonK. Guaranteed, the only reason you're saying that is because of Gwen Stacy's death. Aside from that, when was there ever heart or emotion in the TASM movies? Compared to Raimi's films, Webb's just feel so cold, distant, and corporate. Opinions are opinions, but I'm not sure this is really even up for debate.

@bealz, I hear what you're saying. In fact, one of the reasons I really dislike TASM 1 is because they went through the whole origin thing so soon after Raimi's movie did. I'm in full favor of a reboot to wipe away the stench of everything in this new franchise, but by no means would another reboot have to retread the origin story AGAIN. Reboot it, but maybe do it so that Peter is ALREADY Spider-Man. No need to see how the spider bite happens or how Uncle Ben dies. Those are givens, and we've seen that done to death.

They just need to reboot the franchise and skip the origin... Take their time to write a proper script were they're not trying to cram as many action figures into the plot. Write a good story and find actors that fit the characters and the money and fans will come!

We do not need a reboot if we want a good Spider Man movie. We need a well written/not rushed script.

*SPOILER WARNING for ASM2*
Horrible character development, horrible story line, I had no emotional investment for any part of either of the ASMs including when Gwyn died. I was just like okay. Bring back Raimi!!!!! This new Spiderman is boring and not thought out at all. Harry Osborne was a joke, so was Electrode, okay so you hate spiderman because he forgot your name, get real. So not believable. Dont even get me started on Rhino that acting was just laughable. It's a shame what Sony has done

I was alright with ASM2. I wasn't exactly unhappy leaving the theatre. However, I agree with some of the sentiment below that this new iteration of Spiderman on the big screen has been kind of underwhelming. Especially when you stack it against X-Men: DOFP, Cap2, and possibly GOTG. ASM2 does come off as a jumbled mess of ideas rather than a coherent story.

Hopefully this is true. Granted it took them two films to realize this franchise and these actors were ALLLL shades of wrong... but late is better than never. The main problems I had with this franchise are Garfield of course, the scripts have come off as stupified, watered down versions of the last franchise, villains are completely uninteresting, and Tabatha Coffee from "Tabatha's Salon Takeover" playing Harry.

Introduce Kraven, the Shocker and the Vulture in the next movie. Have Spiderman face the Goblin, the Rhino, Electro, Kraven, the Shocker and the Vulture at the end of the movie. Don't do a Sinister Six movie. Don't do a Venom movie. Wait a few years. Reboot again but DON'T do the origin story again. Instead, have Peter Parker working at the Daily Bugle and do the Venom story but have John Jameson go to Mars and bring back the symbiote in his spacesuit. have John Jameson be the first

Kraven joins forces with Spiderman to defeat the Spider Slayer. The next film would have the Scorpion and Carnage as villains. This is a much better plan, one that doesn't have to be rushed.

This "amazing" series has officially failed.

It is just not interesting anymore. So far every villain has been stupid and Kid Goblin was the worst of them all. I didn't like the first one but it was leagues better than the rushed crap we got with the recent one.

This whole series is just garbage. They are ruining everything about the Ultimate universe (the comics these movies are based on is NOT amazing, but the Ultimate series) and it just sucks.

I feel like this franchise has no idea what it's doing. Looks like they should just scrap the Sinister Six film and Venom film since they can't even make a good Amazing Spider Man film properly with this new rebooted franchise.

Too bad Drew Goddard abandoned a series with far more potential (Daredevil) to do The Sinister Six. I'm conflicted, because a movie based on the Sinister Six does not interest me, but I really like Goddard and want to see him succeed as a director after The Cabin In The Woods. Acting as showrunner for Daredevil could have been a great opportunity for him, but he chose the big name superhero film. Can I blame him? No, but it doesn't make me any less disappointed.
