Has the movie formerly known as M:I4 found its big baddie?

Sep. 24, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Now that Tom Cruise and director Brad Bird have mostly squared away Ethan Hunt's team for NOT M:I4 with a cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, focus must now turn to the villain at the center of the story. Michael Nyqvist, who starred as Mikael Blomkvist in the Swedish version of GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, is reportedly in final talks to star as the film's lead villain.

Who exactly the villain of the piece will be and what kinda evil shenanigans he'll be up to remains unclear but the report claims Nyqvist's character is "not your typical spy-film villain." I don't know, he kinda looks like a typical spy-film villain to me (minus the Gap sweater, I mean). An atypical spy-film villain would be like a really old black woman. Or Siamese twins from Canada.

With Nyqvist reportedly set, the next major role to be cast in the film is the head of IMF. Apparently Bird and Cruise are looking for a major A-list actor to join the cast for the role (played previously by Jon Voight, Anthony Hopkins and Laurence Fishburne). I know it would never happen but they need to get a guy like Gene Hackman. Or Warren Beatty or something. An A-list guy who hasn't been seen in a while to come out of retirement for a cameo.

Filming on NOT M:I4 is expected to begin this October in Prague.

Extra Tidbit: A possible title for the fourth film is THE MISSION, which is just terrible.

For a moment I thought that was Niels Arestrup.

So I'm guessing the villian won't be another fallen IMF agent. I want Clint Eastwood for the head of IMF, to bad it'll never happen.

Just call it Mission Impossible its not like when they were making the first one they were thinking this movie is about a brand new character not in the show but still features one of the characters from the TV show then the sequels didnt have any character from the show. Its like this the new movie going to have Ethan Hunt and then followed with 2 new movies with a new characters. So what I am trying to say is Ethan Hunt isnt Mission Impossible so they can do what they did in the first trilogy

Henry Czerny (Kittridge) was actually the head of IMF in Mission Impossible.

And really, would it be such a bad idea for the makers of NM:I4 to bring him back? That guy practically personified the type of boss you don't want chasing your ass down if he thought you double crossed IMF.

Old Black Lady

I usually like all the Joblo staff and think they're clever and such, but the idea of the old black lady as a "refreshing" new villain made me genuinely laugh. Thanks Doc Sampson.
I thought Nyqvist was an ugly ass choice for the Millenium trilogy, but I bet he could rock the shit out of a good villain role.

This is cool! This guy definitely has movie star written all over him. As for the A lister they're looking for they should get Sean Connery. Nobody is more spy than him (even though I know he'd never do it)

Wow

Michael Nyqvist looks a lot older in that picture than he does in the Millennium trilogy. Good choice if it's true though- agree with HEL105 that he has a big act to follow with Hoffman in MI3.

I'm really excited about this, as I love the series and Tom Cruise. But they are really pissing me off with all this title bullshit. Just call it M:I4 or Mission:Impossible with some secondary title (ex: Mission Impossible: The Quest for Soandso) and call it a day.

Hackman - such a great idea. He really is one of the very best screen actors. As for what you said about Nyquist - yup, absolutely looks like your typical Bond movie villain. Hey Hollywood, maybe he could play the evil (err, Swedish) brother to Craig's Bond!
