Spoilers: Havok confirmed plus new character and plot details for X-Men: Days of Future Past

Jul. 15, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Let's get the less spoilery stuff out of the way first: at the beginning of last month we caught wind that Lucas Till (Havok) was spotted in Montreal while X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST was filming. At the time there was no other news on Till's involvement with the film, but today Bryan Singer has confirmed on (where else?) his Twitter account that Lucas Till is back for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and posted this image of the actor:

Now on to some plot details and spoilers that might be revealed for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST at SDCC. To learn more, just scroll past the worst Wolverine costume you'll ever see.

Wolverine Spoiler

There's a specific reason why I used Wolvie as the spoiler. Vulture has learned some of the secrets about the new film, and if you're one of those fans that are sick of the X-MEN films being so Wolverine-centric I've got some bad news for you. In the comics that X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is based off of, Kitty Pryde sends herself into the past to warn the X-Men about the assassination of a senator that will create a Sentinel controlled dystopian future. The X-Men, of course, must prevent the event from happening.

According to Vulture's sources, it'll be a little different in the movie:

In Singer's take, Ellen Page returns as Kitty from the Brett Ratner–directed X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, but this time she uses her powers to send Hugh Jackman's Wolverine back into the past, where he encounters the younger mutants played by James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender. However, something bad happens to Kitty during the time-travel trance, and while Wolverine is still under her spell, the other X-Men must race to find a mutant who can siphon Kitty's powers and bring their friend back to the future.

This would explain those images of Wolverine wearing 1970's clothing. I really don't have a problem with Logan being the one sent into the past, but I'm sure a few of you aren't too pleased about this news. Also, would anyone be surprised if the mutant they need turns out to be Rogue?

Vulture has some other new information about the villains in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST as well. Many people have speculated about Peter Dinklage's role in the film, and the most recent theory has been he's playing Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels. Vulture has learned that Dinklage will indeed be playing the character in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

Vulture has also identified Josh Helman's role in the film, and he'll be playing a very familiar character: a young Bill Stryker. It makes sense and would be another connection to the original trilogy since Brian Cox played the villainous character in X2: X-MEN UNITED. I'm a little disappointed though they decided to go back with Stryker, considering how many other great characters (mutant and "normal") have appeared in the comics.

We'll get some real confirmation soon at Comic-Con, and the X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST panel shouldn't disappoint. Besides new information on the film, at least a dozen cast members are expected to attend according to Vulture. A pox on all you lucky bastards that get to go!

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST starring Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Paquin, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Halle Berry and Shawn Ashmore will be in theaters on May 23rd, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: If true, what do you think of Wolverine being sent back instead of Kitty Pryde?

Booooring

Yeah the Wolverine news does kinda bum me out. Why does he have to be the face of the entire X-Men franchise? Why does his character get all these in-depth iterations with all kinds of backstory and the others are relegated to sideshows? Don't get me wrong, it would be hard for anyone to ever top Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but it can be done. If any Marvel franchise should be up for a reboot next (and I mean real reboot with new actors/radically different costume design/fresh storylines)

During my day dreaming sessions where I think about stuff that won't ever benefit me in the real world ...I wondered how Logan will remember the Japanese guy that he saved and the whole hold the sword thing for me line in his latest movie on the count of losing his memory in Origins (back in the 80's, I think). I hope that's explained...coz this series of X-Men movies are so inconsistent (when exactly did Charles lose his ability to walk...anyone???), I fear this will be yet another thing

Yeah that can be an issue and who knows now, but I am gonna guess that since he still does remember stuff (having flashbacks and all) and Xavier telling him he needs to work it out himself "its a puzzle that needs worked out" that as time goes by and the more he thinks about it the more he can remember? Or maybe he will say he doesn't remember and they old man will remind him by telling him what happened and what he did for him and how he wanted to thank him?

Makes Sense

In the comics wolverine shows up all the time in the strangest of places. But besides that, I mean what movie do you want to see? You want to see Juno running around in the 70s dressed like a flower child, or do you want to see Jackman in a leisure suit slicing shit up??? I choose the latter. Plus in the original story it's just Shadow Cat and old wolverine

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but wasn't Jackman's involvement not even secured in this film until late in the pre-production process? So, what would the story have been if he wasn't available? So much of this film appears to be just throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. Like they are just making it up as they go along, which rarely works out well in film.

This sounds like a cop out. I like Jackman as Wolverine, and I like the character alot too. But they're releasing a Wolverine movie this year, they have a huge cast of characters to draw from, and Jackman has even said that he doesn't think he can keep doing Wolverine anymore because of the physical toll on his body from staying in that shape for so long at his age. That alone is why he should be reduced to a secondary role for this movie and someone else be allowed to take the spotlight.

And here's another thing. This could turn out really great, but Kitty Pryde's powers are to phase through solid objects, that's it! How does she all of a sudden have the ability to send people back in time? In the comics it was described as a telepathic connection used to send her consciousness back in time. I'm curious to see how they explain this in the movie. All of this news is convincing me even more that this will end up being a giant turd!

In the first paragraph, I forgot to mention they should take that route as a way of transitioning in new characters to take the spotlight, as passing of the torch if you will.

Don't blame Wolverine

There are a lot of things that make me skeptical about this movie, but making it revolve around Wolverine is actually not one of them. I understand the complaints of "too much Wolverine". I think it is actually right in line with "too much Iron Man". Just as Captain America should have been the stand out leader of the Avengers, Cyclops should have been the stand out leader of the X-men. Instead, they chose to highlight RDJ and Jackman, respectively.

However, I do think it is the appropriate adjustment for bringing the property to cinema. Both of these guys ooze charisma. When they are on the screen they quite simply steal the show. I need to revisit the X-men movies, but I remember X-men 1 being centered around Rogue. I also remember X-men 3 being centered around Jean Grey. Yet, what do most people remember? Wolverine. I think he gets more attention because the actor earns it.

I do want to mention that I wish they would scale back on these characters in the comics. Definitely Wolverine over-load there and the same defense can't be used.

Yea, you make a really good point. Of X-Men to X3, the only movie to really focus on Wolverine was X2. I think the big take away for audiences is yes, Jackman has so much charisma and just becomes the character on screen. But I think what resonates most is that Jackman also gets all the best action sequences in the films, and that's probably a huge take away for audiences which comes off as a lot of Wolverine in the movies.

AHHHHH!

Its not a matter of how many X-Men character you can jam into one movie...its about quality and content...you start with most of the characters from X-Men first class...pepper in some of people's favorites from the first X-Men movie and maybe maybe add one new hero..THATS IT!
Wolverine SHOULDNT BE GETTING CENTER STAGE,,,,,HE HAS HIS OWN MOVIE....yeah I know Hugh Jackman is bank-able....and I do like him..but X-Men should focus on another orginal character like Cyclops or Beast, etc.

Totally agree with you. In all honesty, the story sounds like it would be better if Kitty is the one that's sent back in time, meets up with the First Class X-men, throughout the story they realize they'll need some extra firepower, so in the third act Kitty tracks down Wolverine in that time and has him help them. Reduce his involvement to a cameo with some really kick ass action scenes.

Again the plot thickens...with extra poop.
Wolverine center stage again, might as well call it 'Wolverine's Days of Future Past' and rename the original 3 X-men movies 'Wolverine and the X-Men'.
My one dream for a live action X-Men movie, was to see Cyclops blow Sentinels to shit with his optic blasts, I can't get over he's probably not going to be in this.

time travel conciousness ...

There is a better theory. Wolverine exists basically the same state in both times. He is a fully matured adult and not deteriorating due to age, his brain could also handle unlimited trauma. Kitty is not born in the 70s. She phases wolverine's conciousness to his past self. This has been used in Wolverine and the X-men that thought having no actual matter can move through time more easily. With the craziness that will be going on. It may be an easier pill to swallow if they leave out Time Cop.

Having to locate a new mutant Bishop would give a reason to addd him to the movie.

sounds like a good theory. I just do't remember Kitty being able to transport conciousness through time. I always remembered it being explained through a telepathic connection.

All of that said, it would be cool if they introduce Bishop to go back in time to send Wolverine back to the present to save Kitty. But in doing so he gets severed from the connection and is left in the past. End result, he joins the First Class roster

To Bryan Singer...

I'm really glad you are back and I really appreciate Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. However, don't you think it is time to let someone else to take the spotlight? You have plenty of capable actors and actresses that could step up in this.

Ellen Page should habe the spotligh on this movie, not Jackman. But anyway, at least she is in the movie. I'll hope for a good role at least.

This is fine to me. Wolverine is my favorite character in the X-Men along with Cyclops, Gambit, and Deadpool and Jackman owns the role everytime we see him on screen. Also, he's the most popular character and Jackman is the most popular actor out of the entire ensemble cast so it would make sense to have him be the main character again for a film like this.

I'm glad to see Havok back, but can Singer just PLEASE PLEASE confirm Cyclops for this already? I'm already convinced he's in it.

you know. out of all the comic films thats already in production, i think im more excited for Captain America 2, thor a close second. The X-Men movie was something i was excited for, but when i think more and more about, no matter how many mutants you throw at this thing, its not gonna do them justice, no real character development cuz they are too busy making a cameos, like Psylocke in the 3rd film. i would be just fine with a focus on just a few characters. but like i stated in a previous

I think this is going to be a mess. A clusterfuck of Marvel mutant cameos and though I really like Hugh Jackman I groaned when I read the description in this article that he is in fact going to be the center of yet another X-Men film. On the positive side I'm glad Singer is back. I think he won't let it go to shit because he started the franchise and seems to genuinely care about it and its fans. On the downside I don't like what 20th Century Fox has done to the X-Men in general...I wish Marvel

Actually, I hated Origins. It was more of a highlight reel in terms of him. Even being a loyal fan, a turd is a turd. I commented on another story that if they "originally" would have started Wolverine as a standalone and R-rated like Blade it would have satisfied us hardcore fans more than what we have gotten. That being said I really thought Jackman owned the role and when he eventually walks away and others follow, he will be the Sean Connery or gold standard of the character.

Why?

Is it really hard to have a movie that focuses on the young mutants like X-Men: First Class? Or does Singer just have an obsession with Hugh Jackman and/or Wolverine? I wonder if Wolverine will meet up with his past self to defeat the Sentinels.

Still my most anticipated of 2014 (next to "Winter Soldier")

To me...Any & all of the X-Men comics & movies (various animated series) are all separate entities. The movies can change & substitute plots / main character deaths etc. a little bit as long as the filmmakers & cast stay true to the *spirit* of the storyline & characters they're adapting. That said, I'm excited as hell to finally hear that Lucas Till as Havoc is back. I liked the back & forth between him & Nicholas Hoult (Hank/Beast) in 1st Class.

Brett Ratner's abortion did none of those

That said, I'm excited as hell to finally hear that Lucas Till as Havoc is back. I liked the back & forth between him & Nicholas Hoult (Hank/Beast) in 1st Class.

Brett Ratner's abortion did none of those things & was just FOX's quick-fix idea to rush "X3" into theaters before Singer's "Superman Returns" in 2006.

And yes, I think the X-Men cinematic universe has featured Wolverine in the spotlight a little too much. (nothing wrong w/ Jackman...just the Logan-free "First Class" was an awesome step in the right direction)

I agree with you on all accounts.

I'm indifferent.

On one side, I am excited to see how this pans out. On the other side, I am a little worried about combining the new with the old. I saw First Class as a great reboot but not a particularly well done prequel (continuity issues such as cerebro, Magneto's helmet, Prof. X's paralysis, etc.). Overall I am still looking forward to the film but will remain curiously optimistic. I don't have a huge problem with them sending Wolverine back in time but it would have been damn cool to see Kitty do that

We already learned at the end of X3 that the "cure" was not permanent.

6 movies now

So this will be the 6th X Men film that's focused on Wolverine.

That's 4 films too many.

Yeah, I'd guessed that Wolverine would be the one getting sent back, since that's really the only feasible way to get him to team up with the First Class group. Also, Latino review reported this, as well as the confirmation about Dinklage playing Trask about a month ago.

It was reported on this site as well, and I'm not positive LR "confirmed" Dinklage. They may have said, "We absolutely believe he's playing Trask" but that's not the same as an official announcement from a studio. It's a rumor from a source, and although there may be truths in them they still need to be treated as rumors until proven otherwise. Even this is still technically a rumor in my opinion. Maybe a very accurate rumor, but still a rumor.

If this is true, all my hopes for this are lost.

This is Singer saying "Hey, here I come so you can all see how cool my X-Men 3 would have been", but we don't need that anymore. We needed a sequel to a great reboot, using the characters that were ESTABLISHED in that sequel. Now he is crapping all over a cleaned house.
