Hayao Miyazaki planning a sequel, but for what film?

Aug. 23, 2010by: Paul Tassi

Everyone's favorite animation director Hayao Miyazaki says he's making a sequel to one of his beloved classics, according to Cut Magazine (via AICN). What will it be? TORTORO RETURNS? MONONOKE LEGENDS? REVENGE OF PONYO?

Nope. Try PORCO ROSSO: THE LAST SORTIE.

Yes, the tale Miyazaki has decided needs more telling is PORCO ROSSO, his 1992 feature about a former World War I ace with the face of a pig. The sequel would have Porco flying in the Spanish Civil War. He says to expect the film in four or five years or so. Hey, animation by hand takes a while, ok?

I'll be honest, even though I've seen five or six Miyazaki movies, I hadn't even heard of this one until right now. For anyone that has, do you think that this deserves a sequel? I know I'd love to see another TORTORO or MONONOKE installment, but I guess I have to trust the man's judgment.

Extra Tidbit: Am I alone in thinking PONYO was about twenty notches below Miyazaki's usual genius?

i think he should do a sequel to spirited away like with Chihiro meeting back up with Haku. :) I LOVED that movie.
I liked this movie as well but not as much as his other films.

Ponyo was brilliant. It was the most charming and delightful movie that I've seen in quite a while. As for a sequel to Porco Rosso, if Miyazaki wants to do it, I have full confidence that it will be good.

I liked Porco Rosso...

But a sequel may be too much. The only one I could see a sequel of would be Howl's Moving Castle, as there is a sequel to the novel called House of Many Ways. It's in the same spirit without being a re-hash.

Extra Tidbit

I, too, had felt as if he fell short with that one. But, I the more I think about it, the more I think he toned it down, essentially, because he was gearing it towards a younger audience. It was enjoyable, nonetheless, though.

Actually...

Doing Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind properly would be nice. I'm not saying remake, but do the movie a little closer to the subject material. The movie is butchered by comparison to the books. Kinda like Akira.

Check out My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, & Laputa: Castle In The Sky. Also, Howls Moving Castle is pretty good too.

I hope you're alone...Ponyo is one of the studio's best. I didn't like Porco Rosso as much as I wanted to, but that's partly due to the feeling of story elements being cut short and underdeveloped. So, yeah, I'm okay with a sequel!

Possibly my favorite animation film of all-time, when I saw it said Miyazaki sequel, I was hoping for Porco! Played by Keaton and Jean Reno, I love this character.

Regardless of the sequel thing, Porco Rosso's story did leave things open, and it's been 18 years, so it makes sense. And obviously if he and Ghibli were to make a sequel for the sake of it, it wouldn't be a film few people have seen. I remain devoted to him, just as I remain devoted to Pixar. WITHOUT comparisons.

This is great news! "Porco" is a very underrated film by him, and is one of the few that really does leave itself open for a sequel! Awesome!

Sidenote- A "Monoke" sequel would have nothing to say. "Ponyo" was amazing, but in a different way than his usual stuff- it's a brilliant kids movie, whereas most of his others aren't exclusively kids movies.

1. PONYO was amazing.
2. A sequal to Princess mononoke would not work, it's a stand alone story as are most Ghibli movies.
3. How the hell have you not heard of this? You write for a movie website and Ghibli rival pixar for being consistantly original and good, and they've been doing it for longer.

I thought he didn't believe in sequels...

Whatever. I trust him, just like I trusted Pixar with their Toy Story sequels. The man is a genius and wouldn't just make a sequel for the heck of it. There's obviously a story he really wants to tell, and I trust im to tell it well.

I had a feeling

It was going to be this movie even before the page loaded. The movie is a little outdated, even compared to Totoro or Kiki. Still worth a watch at least once. Definately not high on my Ghibli movies.

I'm very disappointed. I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki's and his defiance of his rule of no sequels is very disheartening. "Porco Rosso" was excellent, but was better as just a one shot like everything else Miyazaki has helmed. I'm not very fond of this news.
