HBO's Hobgoblin gets director Darren Aronofsky

Jun. 16, 2011by: Dave Davis

Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky decided he didn't want to spend time in Japan for THE WOLVERINE, but he's willing to visit WWII Europe for HBO.

Aronofsky will direct the pilot for the cable network's new potential series "Hobgoblin", from Pulitzer-winning author and Hollywood script doctor Michael Chabon ("The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay") and his author wife Ayelet Waldman ("Love And Other Impossible Pursuits").

Besides the talent, what's got the deep-pocketed HBO all fired up about the project? The series involves "a group of con men and magicians who use their skills of deception to help defeat Hitler and the Germans during World War II." And I honestly don't know who wouldn't want to watch that, except maybe Hitler.

Since BLACK SWAN (and his WOLVERINE departure), the scarfed/'stached director has also been working on getting his big-budget biblical epic NOAH going, and has also considered a sci-fi script called HUMAN NATURE that could star George Clooney.

Extra Tidbit: Aronofsky also spends his spare time shooting commercials with Jessica Biel.

Wait, so this Hobgoblin thing is not going to be the story of Roderick Kingsley? Oh well, I guess Hitler-fighting magicians might be good too.

I hope it has some sort of hobgoblin creature in it. I would love to see Aronofsky do a horror movie with a creepy little monster thing is like eating people. I hope it's not some metaphorical shit cause a Hobgoblin is a freaky dwarf man but eviler.

Getting big league directors to direct pilots or premier episodes is nothing new, especially if that director is attached as a Producer. Scorsese directed the first episode of Boardwalk Empire, Frank Darabont directed the first episode of The Walking Dead, Bryan Singer directed the pilot for House.

and it's basically a token credit because the debut episodes didn't really outdo any of the other episodes in terms of direction, so what's really the point other than to have a name on it?

Inclined to disagree. Scorsese's pilot for Boardwalk was spectacular. Also really dug QT's CSI episodes.

yes they were, but my point is the quality of the episodes didn't even flinch after these director's left.

Are you calling me Hitler, because I am not interested (sorry, not a fan of WWII related stuff). Pretty harsh.

What a falling out he must've had with The Wolverine producers, etc. Surely a high profile film would have been a better career move? Will he look to direct a remake of Full House next?

What? You realize that this is a pilot for a HBO series with an intriguing concept. This is not some sitcom on broadcast TV. HBO is known for quality television.

And did you miss the part where he is also working on his dream Noah's Ark project and a film with George Clooney? I think he'll be fine, even without doing that comic book movie.

token credit basically

and I couldn't care less that Aronofsky is directing the first episode (whoopdy doo) BUT this concept sound brilliant, HBO is on a freakin hot streak, and it doesn't look like it'll end anytime soon!

...still waiting for the inevitable HBO Sc-fi program

I literally just watched Black Swan for the first time and I'm sorry, I just don't get it... I understand why Natalie Portman won for that fucked up role she played, but a good movie??? Does anyone else think Aronofsky is way overrated?

I think you need to look at some of his early films like Pi or Requiem for a Dream to fully appreciate his directing skills. However, Black Swan had some incredible visuals and I think managed to portray the psychological deterioration of Portman's character effectively. This is his strength and no matter what you think of the rest of the film, I find it hard to believe that anyone would not at least appreciate the way the film shows Portman's transformation.

I love anything written by Chabon and Aronofsky is one of the best filmakers of our time. Needless to say this sounds too cool to be true. Then again so did Wolverine... sigh.

BZA

Damn, HBO loves its homo-erotic story lines... "Not that there's anything wrong with that " (Seinfeld joke for those that don't know)

Sounds awesome!

Sounds like this series may have a lot of potential. HBO could use it, their TV series in the past few years have lacked the umpf of their stuff from the early 2000s. But still...WOULD WAY RATHER SEE WOLVERINE!!!!
