Hear the music! Five new clips from Les Miserables, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway

Dec. 3, 2012by: Paul Shirey

With the upcoming adaptation of LES MISERABLES set to drown theaters in a sea of tears and emotion this holiday season, these new clips will serve as a reminder to bring some tissues for those that are subject to emotional outbursts.  Director Tom Hooper shot the film with the actors singing on-set rather than lip synching to pre-recorded material, which is the norm for musicals, and the difference is astounding.  These clips show how different the impact is when the actor isn't basically in a "sing-a-long" and actually performing the material.  It looks like the gamble will pay off in spades.

For a movie that already looks amazing, these clips serve as evidence that this will be a film to contend with and likely solidify itself as the adaptation of the long-running stage musical.  And this is coming from someone who generally hates musicals.  With all involved, LES MISERABLES, has stationed itself as a movie not to be missed in theaters.

Have a listen:

LES MISERABLES, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham-Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Eddie Redmayne opens on December 25, 2012.

I didnt think it was that bad

Crowes bit here is not a great representation of his singing ability or his characters range. People dont realize that he has a fairly successful music career as well as acting. This is one of the filler songs that i actually though was gonna be taken out. Basically its just spoken word from the two of them matching the rhythm of the underscore. A better clip for his character should be from "Stars"

And for good measure, heres Russell Crowe actually singing

I'll never forget the story of him inviting Matt Stone and Trey Parker to listen to his album.

Russell sounds like that high school jock who does theatre to pick up chicks (yes...it works)

But his voice is strained and he looks petrified. his acting only comes through when his mouth is closed or when he said "no"

He will be the weak point in an otherwise brilliant film that could easily sweep the Oscars (with Eddie Redmayne getting best supporting actor instead of Russell)

I predict the film will be nominated for most of the major awards, but will win only a select few, and Hathaway will likely be the only actor winning.

I'm also willing to wager that someone who proclaims "Musicals suck" probably has no idea how singing actually works.

Oh please. I never said Crowe sounds "good", however, I find your reply laughable. Crowe has a singing background (not classical, however, as Hathaway, Barks, Seyfried, and even Jackman do), and while I anticipate him being a weak-ish link in what's sure to be an exceptional adaptation of a wonderful musical, I challenge you to elaborate any facts about the actual breakdown of singing and vocalizing.
Also, why does someone who just ignorantly claims all musicals suck feel the need to watch

Trolling?

Dude, your comments make no sense. I don't have to know anything about how singing works to know if something doesn't good to me.

I watched them because I figured, what the hell?!

Hating a movie just because it falls into a certain genre is just ignorant. This movie is also a war film, something i with the advertisements played up a little

First off, I don't count Disney movies as musicals. Secondly, those movies might have been good, but then the singing starts and it becomes annoying. And Chicago winning Best Picture is as obvious a "statement award" as the Academy can make. They're expressing admiration for what the movie represents. They think it's cool to give out a statue to the Little Engine That Could. To remember the old times.

Musicals "suck"? Or perhaps your no-doubt limited experience and knowledge of them has led you to believe this.
Two words: Stephen Sondheim. The man has more talent on display in one of his misfires than 99% of anyone in Hollywood at the top of their game. His work is inarguably excellent and brilliant.
"Les Mis" is nowhere near the level of Sondheim's material, but it is not a jaunty, hip, song-and-dance fest: it's filled with war, crime, famine, suffering, and death. In fact, several of the

"Les Mis" is nowhere near the level of Sondheim's material, but it is not a jaunty, hip, song-and-dance fest: it's filled with war, crime, famine, suffering, and death. In fact, several of the leads die throughout the course of the story. The songs are strong and actually propel the story forward as opposed to slowing it down.
"Chicago" was a terrific adaptation, and it fully deserved its Best Picture win. In fact, its only real misstep was scaling back the character of Velma.

I defend your right to hate a genre like this. I hate Twilight almost as blindly. However musicals don't suck. They are form of emotion. When talking isn't enough to express the stakes. Some musicals also really rock like JC Superstar or Rent. You gotta find what works, but it's a fine art. Les Miserables and Disney's (yes Disney musicals ARE musicals) Hunchback of Notre Dame are some of the most epic, chill-inducing scores ever. I would give it a shot, but no one is forcing you. Like I

Like I said...I hate Twilight and I won't even see the movies or read the books to be proven wrong, I just judge the reaction of the fan girls and that's my sole reason for being annoyed by it.

I agree with Jekkie24601 (nice nod to the film). You cant go around blindly hating something. I hate the twilight fan girls but it wasnt until i sat down and watched the first two film (under special circumstances) that i can finally say with certainty that that film series was terrible. I've stopped making fun of "The Notebook" because i havent seen it. Though i still make fun of Nickolas Sparks in general for having seen 2 of his other movies.

Wow

Certainly sounds different than the musicals we're usually accustomed to.
But.. OH MY GOD does Russell Crowe's singing voice take me out of the moment. Anyone else surprised ?
