Heath as Parnassus

10.22.2008
I have very mixed feelings about Heath's final role, that of the mystic Doctor Parnassus, in Terry Gilliam's highly anticipated THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS. On one hand, I was so affected by his performance as The Joker, that I can't, and don't want to envision him in anything else. On the other, and more logical hand, I'm excited to have another glimpse of such a unique talent, one final time. It's still hard to fathom that the man who played The Joker will never play anything else again. On that all too sad note, I present to you an image of Mr. Ledger as The Doctor himself. Amazing.

Extra Tidbit: I still can't get over how good Heath was as The Joker.

Actually, the "respect for a great actor" has been posted a billion times so far, which is why it's getting tiring to read. There's a point where you kind of have to move on. TDK was a good movie, Heath was great, I'm admitting it, but why does it need to be brought up after everything? You can't even post a story about another movie without someone saying "Eh, this is nothing compared to how great TDK was." You guys didn't even like Heath before he made that movie anyway. Flashforward to next

Flashforward to next Summer and you'll still be saying "Man, I cant get over how great TDK was". It's become a fad to like that movie. And I agree, the Spider-Man movies were crap.

ntothebadlands

The Dark Knight is essentially Die Hard 3 and HEAT combined, set in the Batman Universe, with elements from On The Waterfron and The Man Who Laughs.

The good thing is that those are all awesome movies, and thus TDK was awesome. And every movie borrows from others, so I'm not to worried about it...

Gotcha. The way you initially worded it was that the make-up made him a better actor/character. Sure it enhances the general feeling of him, given the psychotic nature of him putting on make-up to provide an extra psychotic feeling.

THE CLEVER GUY AND DEKARD

I like DK as movie. No doubt. What I meant is that Heath's clown make up does help us to feel the character of the Joker much better the same way I liked Harvey Two Face. Even when I watch Batman and Batman Returns (Tim Burton) the villains are cleverly disguised and the performance is enhanced better when we do not see the actors. There is too much praise some which I feel is all part of the hype machine.

Dekard77 & AmazSpiderman1

How is it Heath kiss ass? He did a great job and people want to praise him. If he wins an Oscar, is that kissing his ass? And Dekard77, his performance was good mainly because he was wearing make-up? That comment makes no sense. His PERFORMANCE sold the role, not the make-up.

Dekard

Ledger is getting praise not because of his makeup, but because he disappeared completely into the role. Everything from the Joker's laugh to his lip-smacking, Heath took the role head on and was flawless.

As for "kissing Heath's ass", it's called showing respect for a man who died before he could reach his true brilliant potential that he showed signs of.

A brilliant method actor

Isn't it ironic that his final role as The Joker was light years better than anything he did before that?

It's as if he had a deal with his own destiny.

HMMM

I am also a bit sick of the Heath Ledger kiss ass. He was good in DK but mainly cos he was wearing make up all the time. It helps us to look at the character in a different angle than as the actor. The film was good but I am more stoked about the NEW Gilliam flick. Hope he pulls this one off and I did like Brothers Grimm.

Did anyone else notice how 'The Dark Knight' had essentially the same plot as Die Hard 3?

BTW, that's not a criticism, because I loved TDK... just an observation.

I also liked the first two Spidermen a lot as well.

SO ...

... by reading AmazSpiderman's comment, people should think this news should be done like this: Title: Heath As Tony in Parnassus, Text: Here it is. Enjoy. ,and then comes the picture. Now, imagine every article being done this way, and it would be soooo .... boring. Oh, and by the way, Spider-Man movies suck. All three of them.

I realize this pic is news-worthy, so I appreciate the heads up, however I'm sick of seeing every news article about Heath basically turn into just kissing his ass. We get it Joblo.com, you loved Heath Ledger as The Joker. Aren't you tired of telling everyone by now? The same thing happens when you guys talk about Seth Rogan. It's 1% news and 99% blubbering how amazing he is.

I'VE GOT IT!!!

Man, I've been thinking all day about who should direct the Dr. Strange movie (Since today's announcment makes it sounds more like a matter of "when" rather than "if" it will happen). Del Toro would be the absolute best choice in my opinion, but that seems pretty unlikely considering he's scheduled himself into the next two decades. I think Terry Gilliam would be the best replacement you could get. His latest films haven't been his best (I think Brothers Grimm is underrated but it ain't no Time

His latest films haven't been his best (I think Brothers Grimm is underrated but it ain't no Time Bandits, and Tideland is pretty much crap in my book) however if Parnassus is solid then Dr. Strange would make for a mighty nice followup.

Great taste JohnLocke!

I'm also in agreement that TDK and In Bruges are the two best films of 2008.

As for Heath, that was the saddest loss of the year. Truly an amazing actor.

oh man..

People like to play down his role as the joker because people think that The Dark Knight was overhyped and overrated.. but DAMN. He WAS the joker.. that's it. Heath Ledger was not on screen. Not once. I didn't see, hear, feel, sense, or come in contact with Heath Ledger one time during that phenomenal performance. He literally owned that role.. and I really honestly believe that he's either going to win an oscar or get nominated.

I know that's a touchy subject and a lot of people have

I know that's a touchy subject and a lot of people have been ripping apart anyone who says it but I think he's gonna take it this year in best supporting actor. I mean, I haven't seen a movie this year better then TDK.. maybe In Bruges.

Can't wait to see this.

So weird to see him without all that Joker make up on.

Truly a great actor and a truly great loss.
