Heath Ledger documentary gives us a glimpse into his Joker diary

08.10.2015

It's crazy to think that Heath Ledger only lived to be 28 years old, but he left behind some films that were undoubtedly made better thanks to his contributions. The biggest of which would be the seminal DC flick, THE DARK KNIGHT. The documentary film, HEATH LEDGER: TOO YOUNG TO DIE, traces his evolution from the young Australian actor, who very early on displayed an enormous gift for acting, to the complex character actor he became. A clip from the doc has been making the rounds lately and it showcases the diary he created to help engross himself into the role of The Joker.

The Joker has been played by some phenomenal actors over the years and the great thing about his character is that allows each actor their give own interpretation. Not everyone may be sold on Jared Leto's iteration, but at least we can say that he's going to deliver something different. Ledger wasn't my favorite Joker (Mark Hamill, baby!) but I wouldn't fault anyone who says that he is.

The next iteration of The Joker will be seen in David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD, hitting theaters on August 5, 2016.

Mark Hamill, really?

I 100% agree with ShonK how can you compare voice acting to live acting. It doesn't make sense. I understand everyone has there own opinion but that's like when people say "Don't Judge a book by its cover" but in this case your judging his acting by only his voice. There is much more to characters than just their voice and plus it is much easier to voice act compare to actual live acting.

That all aside, in my books Heath Ledger has done the best joker to date, I have never been so

How can you say - and I mean honestly say.....

Mark Hamill is your favorite Joker over Ledger or any other live actor? i dig Hamill's voice acting, believe me it is fantastic but it is voice acting verse LIVE acting. Live acting you have to physically embody the character in every possible way. The look, the mannerisms, the body language, the facial expressions - etc etc. Far more work than voice acting the part.

I wish he could have enjoyed his The Dark Knight Oscar moment.

Is this a legit documentary that will see a limited theatrical run and be available for me to purchase on blu ray?? Or is this a fan made thing that will not see the light of day?!

His Joker performance is by far the single best villainess performance in any movie ever (in my opinion) he even beat out Hopkins' Lector... it was just perfect

It is sad to think about what could've been. With the actor especially, but even the character. I'm curious what may have been different with The Dark Knight Rises if Heath would've been around.
I think Hamill absolutely nailed the voice. Perfect Joker voice. But there was something special about Ledger's performance. Partly being the dedication to it.

It was a great performance. I think people overly give Ledger too much credit because it was his last performance. But agreed I think Hamill captured it. I still would have liked to have seen Crispin Glover as the joker.

His performance as The Joker will forever be one of the greatest, iconic performances of all time. Even today when I watch the film, I'm floored by his portrayal every time.

What's even sadder is that the guy's career was just beginning to take off and obviously if he were still alive, would have been having one hell of a career.

I also remember him a while ago saying his performance was so overrated and that he died was the only reason he got an Oscar.

he was able to squeeze in "ONE HELL OF A" though lol

And movie loving fuck, you lost all credit to me when you acknowledged the Fantastic Four reboot as a good film.

It IS possible for multiple things to be iconic, Movie loving man... I'm trying to decide what's sadder. That you're picking on a guy for using a word twice or that you realized and/or remembered that he did. Come on, dude.

Obviously more than one thing can be iconic, he just uses the same phrases over and over again lol. And I had literally just read the comments on the punisher article then came to this one.

I said I enjoyed it and it wasn't as awful as some of the reviews say but each to there own. I just find it funny the green lantern fan is having a go at someone for liking an equally bad film lol.

Ledger was a great actor. The role of the Joker has been interpreted so many ways, it is such a cool character, it gives an actor lots of different places to go. I am happy that Jared Leto is doing something completely different than what has been done.
