Henry Cavill will be our next Superman!

01.31.2011

Wake up people! I know it's Sunday afternoon, but Warner Bros. has inexplicably decided to break the news that they have found their new Man of Steel for their Nolan-produced, Snyder-directed reboot.

The man who will stand for truth, justice and the American way will actually be a Brit, as Henry Cavill has landed the much coveted role. You probably best know him as the teenage son from THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, but more recently, he's been a fixture on The Tudors on Showtime.

Back in the Bryan Singer SUPERMAN RETURNS days, Cavill was mentioned as a possible choice, though ultimately lost out to Routh. Deadline reports that in recent weeks, Cavill has been the frontrunner for the part, and now Warners is confirming it. Here's what Zack Snyder has to say about the news:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Well, I can't say I know much about the guy, but if they're looking for a young, chiseled Superman, he and his jawline definitely fit the bill.

What do you think about Cavill as Superman?

Extra Tidbit: Sorry millions of Tom Welling fans, but did you really think that would ever, ever happen?

does it really matter folks? When Superman talks, he'll talk with an American accent. ....and that THAT totally nullifies any Britishness!

It was written many times before, but one more time:
Clark Kent isn't american, he's an alien named Kal-El from the planet Krypton! So technically he's an illegal immigrant...
And what difference does it make where an actor comes from? If you like Cavill then be happy he got the role because he fits the part.
Do you also don't like Christian Bale as Batman because he's from Wales?

Meh...

Doesn't matter who you cast as Supes, cause you still have Snyder behind the camera and that is worse enough.

Little Known Fact

Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel, the creators of Superman, originally intended for him to only stand for "Truth and Justice." It was DC comics that added the "and the American Way."

So yes, I can confidently say that the creators didn't really conceive him as "all-American." I'm also from Ohio, which is where the duo met and created the character. "Smallville, KS" is actually backwoods Cleveland.

in the team behind this movie to give Cavill the benefit of the doubt, but does anybody else think he looks an awful lot like Levi Johnston, you know the guy that knocked up Sarah Palins Daughter then posed for PLAYGIRL and pimped out Pistacios?

I'd just like to address a couple of points that have been brought up here.

1. Routh. In no way, shape or form should he have been near this project. It's obviously meant to be a different tone and style than that of Returns (which was a bit campy) and thus, carrying over the lead star would not be appropriate.

Not to mention that the best thing anyone ever says about Routh as Superman is that he wasn't the WORST thing about the film. That's hardly a compliment and I personally was

That's hardly a compliment and I personally was disappointed with his performance. Superman is a larger than life character and you need an actor who has that larger than life quality about him. Someone like Clint Eastwood in his prime. Routh didn't have that quality.

As is mentioned in every Superman comic series (And Kill Bill), Kal-El is Superman. Clark Kent is his costume. When an actor portrays Superman, it should be clear that he's comfortable and himself when he's wearing the tights. He's himself, not holding back, when he's in the costume. If he's to be uncomfortable, it should be while wearing the suit and tie and glasses. Routh seemed to have this backwards. He never seemed confident and determined in the costume.

2. Should Superman be portrayed by an American. Maybe. If for no other reason than to be loyal to the source material. Superman isn't like Batman or Spiderman in that Superman has always stood for the so-called "American Way". Whereas Batman, Spiderman, etc all look at each specific situation and determine what is right or wrong, Superman has that moral compass instilled in him. Superman fights for his country as much as he fights for it's people. There's a reason he was beating up Nazi's in the earlier years. That's also the reason why he and Batman are always at each others throats.

If anyone has ever read Frank Miller's brilliant Dark Knight Returns series, you'll remember that Batman is actually forced to almost kill Superman simply because Batman was trying to rid the streets of evil in his own way, and the U.S. government considered him a risk. They then send Superman, who obeys them like a loyal dog, and goes to hunt down and stop Batman. Superman follows the U.S. government. Not the U.N.

Superman is a cultural icon but more specifically, an American icon. He's always referred to as "the big blue boy scout" and his entire character is built around the fact that he was raised with small town values. The entirety of Smallville is basically supposed to be any cliche mid-American town. Hell, the first sentence on Superman's wiki is that he's an "American cultural icon". Obviously with globalization such that it is, the Superman name has become a brand that is available all over the world, but there is no denying that the roots of his character are very much in Americana.

All that said, I don't really mind that Superman is a Brit. I just take it as payback for Downey's Holmes (Very much a British character). As long as the character is still American (i.e. the movie still takes place in America) and the actor can pull off an American accent, it doesn't really matter to me where the actual actor is from. I do see, however, why others would have big problem with this.

Talent is what is important, not place of birth. Hell, if I held a grudge every time an actor played a character from a different place of birth than his, I'd have to change my damn screen name. :)

3. Superman is a great character. Fuck this new bullshit about how Superman sucks. How he's lame and has a lot of powers. Superman is a difficult character to wrap your head around. Superman is a very internally conflicted character. He's a man of two worlds and is in a constant crisis of identity.

He's a rich and layered character that must choose between his own happiness and the safety of the people he has sworn to protect. He knows that every decision he makes, no matter how small, will effect the world at large. I find that fascinating, apparently not many others do.

Is he my favorite character? No. Bruce Timm's brilliant Batman The Animated Series made it impossible for me to love any character more than Batman. But I do respect the rich history and importance of Superman.

Also, can we lay the stupid "Nobody recognizes him when he's not wearing glasses? How lame" bullshit. As I've said, Clark Kent is the disguise. You never know just how much slouching, being scared and all the other things Supes does when he's Clark can make someone seem completely different. Also, how come no one can put two and two together that Batman has to obviously be very wealthy to do what he does and that he's the same height and build as the richest guy in town. Nor does anyone ever have the brilliant idea to follow the Batmobile to where it came from. These things exist in all superhero stories, just accept it and move on.

4) The comments on this being too soon for a reboot. I said this for Spiderman and I'll say it again here. Batman rebooted after 8 years. Hulk after 5. Bond After 4. Star Trek after 7. In all those cases, the reboots are considered better than the films they rebooted and have higher RT and IMDB scores to prove it. There is no hard and fast rule for when a series should be rebooted. When the character has become stale, or seriously mishandled, it's rebooted. With the track record we've seen with reboots (I'm not talking about remakes and sequels here), I certainly wouldn't mind some more reboots. Fantastic Four, I'm looking at you.

5. Cavill. I always felt bad for the guy for losing out on Superman, Batman AND Bond when he was so close to all three and I'm glad it finally worked out for him. Although I love Monte Cristo, I can't remember him in it nor have I seen him in anything else so I can't be entirely sure of his acting abilities but seeing as how Snyder and Nolan have chosen him, I'll support this decision.

This right here is why I love Superman and why he is my favorite comic book hero of all time.

I'm not really sure

Don't really care if his a brit as long as his a good actor, and is right for the part. But what bothers me is that his only 6'1. And we thought Routh was the smallest superman. I know it's just nit picking and doesn't matter much, but it's a little bother.

Wouldn't have minded them giving Routh another chance. He wasn't the problem with Superman Returns (that would be Spacey, Bosworth, Singer, and the plot). But I guess Cavill is the it guy now so, meh, whatever! Best of luck to him. Hope they make a decent movie.

Cool choice. Hope he works on his accent. I never want to hear "What's the good word, guv'nor?" "My name is Jimmy, you limey prick".

As for Nicolas Cage, we know he likes to wig out, but is it time he actually pulls the wig out and plays Lex Luthor? Just askin'.

I like the way he looks. Never watched The Tudors, and don't remember much from Monte Cristo so performance wise I'm in the dark.

Just don't mess up the suit. Stay classic and please no little 'S' logo's all over. Superman Returns suit was decent looking (besides the clunky boots) but the logo plastered everywhere made it look like it was from a branded clothing store from Krypton.

I remember seeing him in The Count of Monte Cristo (Interesting note: James Caviezel was a front-runner for the Bryan Singer Supes back in 2004), but I haven't seen him in much of anything since until recently, when he presented an award at the Globes. Right when I saw him, I immediately thought, "Holy shit, that's Superman." So needless to say, I'm happy with the choice. Let's hope he gets a little more ripped than Routh did for Returns.

Badass

Henry Cavill is badass, he's been great on the Tudors. I really feel he can pull off the silent stoic type that is required to play Superman. I don't know what his Clark Kent will be like. A great storyline is All Star Superman by Frank Quitely and Grant Morrison

I've seen Henry in "The Tudors", and his acting skills are okay. I'm not sure of his physique though. He might have to beef up.
IMHO, I think that the actor/model who played superman in the "World's Finest" fan trailer, made by Sandy Corloa (I don't know if I'm spelling his name right), has the right look, and the physique. His acting chops need some work though.

It's been awhile since there has been any new photos of Xmen First Class and Spiderman so I guess the fan boys are in need of something else to complain about. Seriously does it matter if the actor is British? You guys act like there has never been a British actor playing an American before. Not to mention that Superman is not of this world so any arguments about his nationality is moot. I understand that he stands for the American way and all that but does that mean the rest of the world can't

Yes, Joe Shuster was the artist and co-creator and was born in Canada but spent most of his life in the U.S. specifically growing up in Cleveland Ohio (thanks Wikipedia) also, last time I checked Canada is part of North AMERICA!!!!

Fantastic Choice!

This is a fantastic choice! I've been hoping Cavill would land the job since before Superman Returns. This actor will likely bring an intensity to the role that we have not yet seen. Much akin to Daniel Craig as Bond. Now... it doesn't matter he's British. Have people forgotten that Bale is Batman? Bale is British... Anyways. This sounds awesome. I'm on board. Strap me in. I'm ready to go

Why are people complaining about his age? Christopher Reeve was 25 when he was cast as Superman, only 26 when it came out. This guy is older than that.

Too all those complaining about the facts he's British... balls. Five words: Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves. Two more words: Kevin Costner. This is our revenge! Seriously though, do think he'll be great, certainly looks the part. Am more concerned about Snyder at this time...

America!

And to all the dumb asses that think he reps the world he does not! He is a world icon but you don't see him holding a Kryptonian or world flag. It's always an American flag. People think just because they watch super hero movies and tv shows they think they know this heroes. Read for years and years then you'll know!

Well I think he looks like the part. Despite that picture having stubble.

And ya, as a Smallville fan I still wish Tom Welling would be in a Superman movie.

In my rage at this casting I forgot that Robert Downey Jr. is Sherlock Holmes so I guess it evens out. The next Doctor Who should be Johnny Depp just to make up for Andrew Garfield being Spiderman.

This could work...

I'm with Sarah1980 that he reps America, but in the end it doesn't matter. I was hoping Routh got a second chance he is both Clark and Superman, but studios are lil' bitches. I have faith in Snyder and Nolan they'll do a great job, plus Cavill is a pretty good actor.

He's not too young. They're casting for a trilogy, so to span 9 years of production, they need someone in their late 20s, so that by the third one Superman isn't 45 and looking his age.

I'm fine with this. What I'm not fine with is the amount of whining that's going on about him being a Brit. But wait, what's that you say? This is Superman we're dealing with here? No one gave a sh*t about this until today. Before this it was all "why do we need a reboot, make a sequel, who gives a damn about supes," and etc. Now, because he's brit and younger than 30, everyone's up in arms. F*ck this. Downey Jr. was Sherlock Holmes (and made him funnier) and no one complained like today.

What do these guys have in common? They're good actors who look the part. Get over yourselves and let's start talking about how well this guy can act. That's MY concern. Can the son of Monte of Cristo take on the blue tights?

Superman shouldn't be a little kid.

I hate how Warner Bros. keeps pushing for younger actors to play these iconic superheroes. When you flip through a Superman comic or graphic novel, you're not looking at some damned little kid in a blue and red costume. They should've cast a more mature looking dude that not only looks like superman, but a superman that you'd be intimidated by if you were a criminal. Word? They really should have cast Jon Hamm. That dude would've been PERFECT. He looks like Superman AND, if he got pissed off,

Who cares if he's British? Superman was never an American, he was from an entirely different planet. He just happened to crash in America because the creators of the comic were American.

As long as this guy can convincingly portray him, I don't see a problem. Hugh Jackman is Australian but no one seems to have a problem with him playing a Canadian in X-Men.

NICE!!!

I've always liked this guy, particularly on The Tudors. He's definitely got the look and the acting chops and will be infinitely more interesting to watch than Brandon Routh was. I truly can't wait for this movie as I've never been a huge fan of any of the Superman films prior so this film can do little wrong in my eyes. As long as it's visually exciting and has a good epic story I'll be a happy Superman fan.

I'm not familiar with the guy, but he looks the part. Out of all the previous Superman actors, I would say he closest resembles Dean Cain from Lois and Clark. I hope this new movie doesn't get a luke-warm response from fans, causing the studio to reboot Superman again after one film. You have to feel for Routh, the guy did a good job with what he was given.

I would have dug Routh back but Canvill works for me as well. And with Zack Snyder directing the movie I will hopefully get an "action oriented" Superman; like Superman II did in its days! Enough origin story, enough lex wanting land; give Superman a formidable foe (like Zod) and let the sparks fly!

Tired of the reboots

Batman Begins came out over ten years after Burton's Batman. It's too soon for yet another Superman movie. I'm not interested, as Bats and Supes are overexposed. Why not a Nolan/Snyder Wonder Woman film instead of Sucker Punch? Why not a Flash movie? Sheesh. Oh and the Brits would be really pissed if an American played Doctor Who. It was proven when Nimoy was rumored to play him years back.

Why should "Sucker Punch", a wholly original story, even be brought into this discussion? It's not based on a superhero or comic, and while it has the same director, everything else is very different. Could you please elaborate, because right, that complainant makes as much sense as somone liking to get stab.

Also, who the fuck cares where the actor is from? Why does that have any bearing on whether or not he's a right fit?

My main (crying point) is that I'd love to see other DC heroes get film treatments instead of Bats/Supes reboots. Green Lantern is a good start. I'm okay with Brit Kent, just wanted to make the Doctor Who point. I know I'll see Sucker Punch, but a Wonder Woman battling Titans and Gods, done by Zack Snyder would be worth the price of admission.

I can't believe how many people are pro this guys casting. I'm with Sarah 1980; If American's can never be James Bond then Brits should never be Superman (aka the most American comic book icon that isn't Captain America). And I seriously think a lot of you have never seen this guy act let alone attempt an American accent and are just going off his looks.

I think with this being a reboot you have to re-cast: hence, no Routh or Welling. Although I do really enjoy both in the role. But casting an unknown with a great CK/Supes look is exactly the right move. Snyder makes me a bit nervous for this project but count me excited.

quoting a fellow schmoe

I'm not "Butthurt" as they say, but it IS a different story with Supes. He stands for truth, justice, and the American way. He is a piece of Americana.

Don't tell me- don't tell me for one second that Brits wouldn't be upset if they cast an American faking an English accent for James Bond. No matter how great and talented the actor may be.

Superman's actor being purely American is NOT vital to the character. As long they cast someone who looks white, looks like Clark/Supes and can talk American English, THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.

You realize an American, faking an English accent, portrays Sherlock Holmes, right? No one seems too pissed about that. Complaining about someones nationality and then saying "well you would be mad if an American played James Bond" is a sad and weak argument. Time to get over your petty prejudices.

Oh and for the dude below who's whining about Supes not being British...well Wolverine and The Joker aren't Australian, Spider-Man isn't half British, and Batman isn't British at all. Wake up, my friend...you're looking at Hollywood and as long as the role is played well, nobody gives a f**k which side of the Earth you're from.

GREAT CHOICE. If we have to go to a Brit in order to get a GOOD ACTOR then so be it.

This guy can act his ass off, he's relatively unknown (fresh start) and he's got the look.

Wish people would get off the Routh bandwagon. This is a fresh start, new and different universe than Returns and the originals so it wouldn't make sense to have him in the role.

He's a little younger than I thought they were going for (only 27), but one reason why Routh seemed so damn young in Returns was

This guy LOOKS Kryptonian! Get him in the gym and he'll be wonderful.

Awesome in the tudors

He was great in the tudors and I thought he would make a great James Bond. I feel for the Yanks cos Superman should be played by an American, but Cavill is a good actor. Hope it works out well for him.

Great casting. Even though Hamm was my first choice, he was too old and even though it would have been great to see Welling, it could never have worked.

Cavill is a great actor and his work on The Tudors is terrific.

I can't wait to see both a new Batman movie AND Superman movie in the same year. Movie is going to be awesome.

Now how about Jon Hamm for Lex Luthor?

Great choice!

He has the look, the right age and he can act! Can't ask for more...

I like this casting, he's not well known, but has starred in some solid works! I like that Supes will be a fresh face, and I'm sure this film will be the best in the series since the first couple of Reeves films! Go Nolan, go Snyder!

I'd still rather have Routh back in the tights.

Indeed...

Superman is not British, he's Kryptonian. Great choice for the man of steel.

I love this new casting of Cavill =]
He is a fantastic and underrated actor...

AND THANK FUCKIN' GOD Tom Welling wasn't chosen - I'm sorry but he is a wooden actor.
