Here comes The Hobbit casting!

10.21.2010

Now that Peter Jackson is finally (finally!!) moving forward on the new movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book THE HOBBIT, we're getting names of some humans who will occupy the roles of various Middle Earth denizens.

As rumored, Martin Freeman ("The Office", THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY) is stepping into the hairy feet of diminutive adventurer Bilbo Baggins. Jackson said: "There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave -- exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit."

Now Deadline has a long list of other actors involved and their characters:

-Thorin Oakenshield : Richard Armitage ("MI-5", upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA)

-Kili : Aidan Turner ("Being Human")

-Fili : Rob Kazinsky ("EastEnders")

-Dwalin : Graham McTavish (SECRETARIAT, RAMBO)

-Oin : John Callen ("Power Rangers Jungle Fury") (???)

-Bombur : Stephen Hunter ("All Saints")

-Dori : Mark Hadlow (KING KONG)

-Gloin : Peter Hambleton ("The Strip")

Deadline points out that they're still talking with Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, Stephen Fry, Saoirse Ronan, Aiden Turner and Bill Nighy (to voice Smaug the dragon). So we're just getting started...

Extra Tidbit: It's happening. Excited now?

Freeman as Bilbo is like an answered prayer. This is awesome.

I'm not too excited about Nighy, that seems kind of obvious somehow. I WAS really excited (when del Toro was attached) of the possibility of Ron Perlman as Smaug. That would have been amazing.

Not Excited.

No im not excited. This is a kids fantasy series. It is also a series about short people as the main characters/heroes. How am i suppose to relate with midgets. I have no interest in watching them on screen. The books were good in elementary school. Why dont we take this money and spend it on making adult fantasy books into movies. Like, George RR Martin.

Wait, so they ARE going with Martin Freeman?

He is the only actor I know of who has that same little charm that Ian Holm has. So this is great news. The other actors, I can't say I know them, though I've probably come across a few of them in movies/TV shows. Bill Nighy could definitely work for Smaug. I wonder who they're looking to cast Stephen Fry as.

Exciting News

Freeman should be a great Bilbo; I really need to read the book again, it's been a while. I don't know too many of the other "Dwarf" actors, and I can't really recall the different characters anyway, but PJ did really well with LOTR casting, so fingers crossed.

This is fantastic news. Iíve wanted Freeman to be the Hobbit since I saw him in the British Office. Heís an incredible actor and he truly deserves the role. Iím so glad they didnít go with somebody ďhipĒ and young. If thereís one thing Jackson is good at, itís nailing the casting.

So what do they want Saoirse Ronan for? Elf princess? I can't remember any female at all in the story, maybe some Lake Town lassie? They better not be changing the story just to include some romantic interest...

Bill Nighy as Smaug is better than what I was hoping for, wow. Sure hope they get to use that perfect Middle Earth setting of New Zealand.

I note no "Balin" yet...

...but that has to be a special casting, since he ends up being Bilbo's close friend.

Interesting to see that John R-D wasn't cast as Gloin.

If I remember correctly he said in an interview that his skin couldn't handle the makeup. He did want to do it though.

It's hard to believe that only weeks ago, we were all wondering if this movie would be even made. Now their talking about casting and filming locations! Exciting! Bring back Ian McKellen's Gandalf the Grey and I'm all set. (BTW, we haven't seen ole' Gandalf the Grey since the prologue of 'The Two Towers' in 2002. 10 years later! Damn!

Thinking of that is just insane... Feels like the trilogy came out like a couple of years ago.

I'm really surprised that Freeman is Bilbo. Not because he is a bad choice, it's just that this casting feels so right that it is hard to believe.

Freeman was without a doubt the best choice for the role. Not familiar with any of the other names, but I guess I didn't know a lot of the Lord of the Rings cast prior to those movies either. But Jackson did a great job casting those films, so he has my trust.

I was right

Ever since my ex wife and I were watching some doco with Martin Freeman in it (wedding show, can't remember the name of it, probably why I'm getting divorced. Lol) I said to her that he would make a perfect Bilbo Baggins. I mean all they have to do is set the camera up to make him look short and he's a flamin Hobbit. Oh yeah and the feet. This is awesome news. I was starting to panic, with all the shit that has plagued this production I thought they would end up having someone like Daniel

So I'm absofuckinlutley stoked.
