Updated with studio confirmation! Here lies plain proof that Prometheus bears an R-rating

May. 7, 2012by:

Prometheus header

There's been a whole back and forth over the last few months between fans, Ridley Scott, and the MPAA about the possible rating PROMETHEUS would bring to cinemas.  The battle between "marketability," truth to vision, and fan opinion has led to an intense debate about what ratings truly mean, both for ticket sales and for the preservation of Ridley Scott's intention

But now the alien is out of the bag, as IMDb user "dvonnesoneek" has posted a picture of their IMAX 3D ticket online for all the world to see:

Prometheus ticket picture

So there it is, folks.  Rated R, plain as day.

Which brings up a new question then - how do you think this will affect the box office? Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely psyched to have an epic Rated R piece of Sci-Fi from one of the genre's greatest visionaries.  But I'm just curious how releasing an epic Rated R piece of Sci-Fi in the middle of the summer season is going to do in ticket sales, and what the result will mean for the future of such films.

So what do you thinK? Does PROMETHEUS have enough mystery and action to outperform the other big-budget-R-rated elephant in the room (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO)? Or will it quickly be running on feeble legs after an initial opening weekend success powered by film fans?

Update:  20th Century Fox has confirmed that PROMETHEUS will be Rated R for “sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.”

Charlize Theron tan background

*Clarifying note: I don't believe that TGWTDT was a failure by any means, as it definitely made back its budget with international grosses included.  But it also was not the runaway success that was hoped for, and beyond commissioning a screenplay the studio hasn't exactly jumped on making the next installment.  Domestically speaking (what studios mostly care about) TGWTDT only made a little over $100 million dollars, which was barely more than its budget, and so it sadly doesn't surprise me that the last news we heard about another movie was way back in early January.

Extra Tidbit: Is my comparison to Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO an unfair one to make?

If anything can revive the studios faith in R-rated films, it has to be Prometheus! I pray to the sci-fi gods that it'll be as huge as indications are! I for one can't friggen wait! :D

The studio has confidence...

You know a studio has huge confidence in a summer tentpole film when they allow it to be Rated-R and not compromising the director's vision to make more money.

I'm hoping this isn't a mistake with the ticket. If not, it looks like FOX has finally gotten their act together.

Hopefully this will lead to Die Hard 5 getting an R.

First, as to your tidbit...yes.

As to the box-office take, it won't beat "The Avengers" and it might not even reach TDKR levels, as some were predicting. But it could do as well as something like "The Expendables," another R-rated movie the fans were only too happy to support.

It's going to do very well. Maybe not shatter records, but it'll make a lot of money.

Even if it does decent numbers, that alone could show the studios that serious hard R sci-fi can make big bank.

NOT PROOF.

Exact same fucking thing happened with Live Free or Die Hard. Early ticket stubs said 'R'.

Theaters are taking a stab at what they THINK the rating will be. Better for them to err on the side of caution. If they say it's PG-13 and it turns out to be R, then holy fuck they might've sold tickets to unaccompanied minors. And some Focus on the Fucking Family fuckbag will pipe up about Hollywood bankrupting our youth.

I'm waiting til I see it from the MPAA. But if it's true, then this means that all the people that were wanting the R rating need to step up, get all their friends and as many people as possible to see this so we can get more adult oriented movies for us to enjoy without a theater full of teens texting and kids that don't shut up. Plus T2 and T3 were R rated Sci-Fi movies released in the middle of summer and it did fine. You can reference the Martix too, though it was released in Spring.

And yes, TGWDT was unfair. It was handled poorly. The holidays is the busiest time for adults and I have no clue why it was released at Christmas.

Awesome!

All I can say is Ridely Scott has never disappointed when filming R-rated films because they are done cleverly instead of being all out gore-fests my favs being;

Gladiator (pure classic)
Black Hawk Down (yes I know it wasn't a summer flick)
Kingdom Of Heaven (I'm probably in the minority)
Body of Lies (which I thought was decent)

Your comparison to TGWTDT confuses me...

Are you guys still acting like that was a flop? It made 232 mil on a 90 mil budget. Nowhere near flop territory. If I just misunderstood what you meant I apologize in advance.
As for the ticket, its not proof the movie will be R. It is however encouraging that it MIGHT be rated R, but not proof.

Wouldn't it bring in more money if it was PG-13?

That way everyone can buy tickets to see it.....Right?

I haven't read anything about the MPAA editing it down for a lighter rating. Plus that's not done with R Rated films.. Just NC-17s. They try to make those R.

To edit a film down to a lighter rating just so it could make more money is the truest definition of "sell out".

Also, why does the rating matter?

The MPAA hasn't cut any scenes from the film, right? So the rating won't affect the film quality at all, as in changing it, so why does it matter?

It matters to me coz I don't want to sit next to some obnoxious kid saying stuff like "HAHA! 0WNd!! AWWW, I'M SOOO UPD8N MY ST@TUS RITE NOW!!"
Also it adds a slight sense of realism to the movie instead of total escapism.

This would be good news if it was officially confirmed. But until we get the official MPAA rating, I'm remaining cautiously optimistic. The MPAA are bastards and I really hope Fox stays true to their word and don't cut anything from Prometheus if it gets an R.

Wait and see

We'll have to wait and see, but if any epic tentpole film was to test the waters with an R rating, this would be it.

And if this is a mega hit, then perhaps Universal will reconsider del Toro's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS.

I still have no desire to see this movie (even though I most likely will see it anyway) but the R rating does add a level of integrity...I guess.

who cares

I have been going to R rated movies since I was 14. I would buy my own ticket and if I didnt I would get someone else to. No, I did not sneak in either. This is still happening. They dont card you at movie theaters. Plus, this should be rated R. Its a Fcking adult movie. A movie for adults, not tweens or kids. Did I mention this is an adult movie?

It won't matter

We're about to see the worst generation of kids in history, as all the people we knew in High School who got knocked up at 16 or 17 are the same people allowing kids to fill up an entire theater to see 21 Jump Street. I had two 7 year olds sitting next to me and behind me, along with kids scattered through the crowd laughing and repeating Penis Jokes. I saw Avengers yesterday and a group of 12-13 year olds were swearing throughout the entire film like little retarded gang bangers.

I think you're missing the point on why we're happy the movie is rated R. It's not to keep the kids out of the theater, but to stay true to Ridley's original vision. Also, sounds like you need to find a new theater to go to

TGWTDT didn't do well, because the movie had already been done before and was available on Netflix. Same thing for "Let the Right One In". If Hollywood would stop remaking perfectly good foreign films two years after they are released abroad, they might save some money by just getting the distribution rights of the original film in the first place.

So in answer to the Tidbit, yes, the analogy is wrong. Since this is a prequel, not a remake.

It sounds like Prometheus might be OFFICIALLY 'R'. [link]

I hope Ridley goes back and adds the stuff he cut out when he thought PG-13 might be a possibility. If it's going to be R, might as well go in balls-deep.

That's great...

at least in a sense that the studio didn't force Scott to edit it down to PG13... And I can understand the hatred for PG13 when R is called for, but lets not piss all over PG13 action films. If it's what the story calls for, PG13 can be a fine and fun film. Look at any of the last 4 Nolan films, all of the Marvel pics as of late, Star Trek... It's all a matter of vision. If it was supposed to be intended for all audiences, it should be. If it was intended for mature audiences, it should not

I mean, could you imagine if The Departed was cut for PG13... That 2 & 1/2 hour movie would have been 23 minutes long.

After the audio clip, I had no doubt

I'm happy about the rating, I'm happy that it'll be in IMAX, I'm happy that Fox isn't upset about this. Is TGWTDT an accurate comparison? Yes and no. That movie is an American adaptation of the book, a book with a popular fan base, sure, but was already adapted in Sweden. Additionally, Prometheus seems like an action packed feast, similar to The Matrix--another rated-R, science fiction, summer movie.

Glad it got an R but i would have seen it either way & i don't get the comparison to Dragon Tattoo & yes I do think it was still a moderate hit anytime a film breaks a $100 mil & I am sure DVD/Blu ray sales helped also. I saw people buying it left & right. Hoping they do make the sequels & with Fincher.

Well according to the budget of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo it is 90 million and it states it made 232 million Worldwide. To me that seems pretty good especially for an R rated movie. If R rated movies are such a big deal why don't they think about lowering the budget. For a R rated movie 90 million seems a bit much imo. Im glad Prometheus received an R rating and Will be there on opening day to see it :P.

If movie houses and the rest would just stop with the above eighteen in order to watch this movie crap then R rated films would make more bank roll in the theaters. Yeah I can see not allowing some ages in to the showing, but come on. Fourteen year old's and up see way worse and know way worse.

Its good to see we don't need a DIRECTOR's CUT on a Ridley Scott Film... And I agree with the TGWTDT statement because thats how most people saw it but I still hold out hope that Fincher returns!
