Here's the first look at Tom Hanks in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

08.10.2011

Today we get out first look at Tom Hanks and the young Thomas Horn in EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE. You know what's cool about Horn? He owned on JEOPARDY! This kid has no previous acting experience and goes from Jeopardy glory to co-starring with Tom Hanks.

The story, adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer's novel is about, "Oskar (Thomas Horn) is convinced that his father (Tom Hanks), who died in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, has left a final message for him hidden somewhere in the city. Feeling disconnected from his grieving mother (Sandra Bullock) and driven by a relentlessly active mind that refuses to believe in things that can’t be observed, Oskar begins searching New York City for the lock that fits a mysterious key he found in his father’s closet. His journey through the five boroughs takes him beyond his own loss to a greater understanding of the observable world around him."

Wait...WHAT? I have to witness the death of Tom Hanks? NOOOOOOO! I can't take it. One Tom Hanks character death is enough! There should be a clause in his contract that he never die.

Stephen Daldry (THE HOURS) is directing the film which also stars Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright, Max Von Sydow and James Gandolfini. The film is due to release on Christmas Day.

This sounds like an interesting movie. I'm not gonna downplay it cause of the actors, and I like Hanks, he's usually very good. It sounds like a pretty depressing film, but there seems to be some kind of adventure element to it as well. The 9/11 stuff will be interesting, that's still kind of a touchy subject I think, especially when you're talking about actual victims.

"One Tom Hanks character death is enough." What does that mean, doesn't he die in a lot of his dramatic movies (Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan, Road to Perdition)?

Agreed. That was a pointless, thoughtless comment.

I read the book over six years ago, and I loved it... but I would have never in my wildest dreams imagined Sandy the Bull in the role of the mother.

The kid actor seems fine enough, and from Daldry's direction with kids in Billy Elliot and The Hours, I have total faith in that department. But Bullock; I love her in her comedy element (if you've got it, flaunt it), but her dramatics never sold me. Not at all, I don't think...

I'm sure it won't be horrible. Stephen Daldry is one of my

I'm sure it won't be horrible. Stephen Daldry is one of my favorites, but at the same time, he's usually been paired up with grade-A talent (again, not undermining Bullock's acting, just in the dramatic area).

I guess we'll just have to see. The plus side is they couldn't have picked a better filmmaker to run the show.

I don't buy Bullock in anything that isn't named Demolition Man or Speed.

no actually he is correct. She has been awful in a lot of good movies. She is terrible and the critics will back that up. There is a reason you havent seen her do much since her fake oscar win, unless you think she choose not to be in anything good since then or even be cast in anything good since then. yeah directors jump all over her dont they. Come on she isnt portman

I agree with cricker. I loved her in Speed, Demolition Man, and even both Miss Congeniality films, but not the films she actually got nominated for. Just so you don't think I'm anti-Bullock, I also liked Hope Floats, Practical Magic, Forces of Nature, While You Were Sleeping and The Lake House.
