Here's the first trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit with Chris Pine and Kenneth Branagh

Oct. 3, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Sadly, one day after the passing of author Tom Clancy, we get a trailer for the reboot of his classic character Jack Ryan.

The trailer for JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT actually looks very inciting. The film directed by Kenneth Branagh tells a new, original Ryan story. We haven't seen the character on the screen since 2002's SUM OF ALL FEARS which gave us Ben Affleck in the leading role.

Here's a synopsis to fill you in: In a story taking place prior to the original Jack Ryan stories, Ryan is a young stock broker working for a billionaire in Moscow before joining the CIA. When the billionaire he is advising frames him for a terrorist plot and kidnaps his wife, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, stop the plot, and save his wife.

While Branagh clearly seems to be the villain here, the trailer makes it out like Kevin Costner might not be such a good guy after all. Chris Pine shows that he might have been the perfect choice for the part, though it is a little early to tell. There's tons of great action, and the trailer might be long but it doesn't give too much away. I think you guys will like what you see.

Is Chris Pine just getting typecast in dumbed-down, actioned-up reboots of popular franchises?

I agree. I like Pine and the film doesn't look terrible but it just looks like another Bourne sequel with Chris instead of Renner.

This reads like Jack Ryan by way of Jason Bourne - and that's just no who or what Jack Ryan is. Really don't want to be, but I'm on the fence about this one.

Not a big fan of Pine but that won't scare me away from this movie. I'm very interested in Branagh though, i've always thought that he should do a big hollywood project to get himself on the map for a larger audience. he clearly is your typical allumn of the British school of fine acting.

Why?

Why do a movie "based on characters created by Tom Clancy", when there are stories he wrote that are much better. The plane sequence of Rainbow Six (the book) would make an awesome trailer alone. That said, I will wind up seeing this in some form or another, just wish they would go to the existing pool of stories written by Clancy himself.

i dont know

they killed the nerd aspect that made Ryan such a cool character. you enjoyed watching him think his way into trouble and narrowly wriggle out. this is more MI:2 than Misson Impossible. Should have just made Costner Jack Ryan and continued with the novels' approach.

Loved the tone of the trailer and Pine seems to be the perfect Jack Ryan for this type of film.

it kind of makes me sad that kenneth branagh has been relegated to "the director of thor".

weird...

how come the poster and trailer for this suddenly came out right after Clancy's death? is it odd timing, or capitalization of Clancy in the headlines?

So, basically they Alex Cross-ed this up...

The formula:
1. Take an iconic character from a series of bestseller novels with existing movie adaptations.
2. Make him a younger version and put him in a film thats a pseudo-prequel origin story, that is NOT an adaptation of any series novel.
3. Lower the intellect, increase the action.

What will set this apart is obviously the scale and talent behind it. But your not gonna get the real Tom Clancy experience that existed in Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games etc. Treading lightly.

The unique thing about jack Ryan is the same thing that also makes me scratch my head. What sets him apart from Bourne and Bond is the fact that he's an analyst not a trained death machine. When someone tries to kill him you wonder how he will escape not which office supply is he going to use to murder his assailant. At the same time after 4 installments you have ask, why is this dude always being shot at? Doesn't he have a desk job? All that being said, this looks cool, Chris Pine is a solid

Another Bourne movie already? Oh wait, this is Jack Ryan trying to be Bourne. Way to go Paramount for half-assing.

This is NOT Alec Baldwin's Jack Ryan

This is not the Jack Ryan we're use to, with Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. Jack Ryan is not an action star, he's an analyst. He just happens to get into situations that result in action. He's a thinking man's hero. Keep in mind, 'The Sum Of All Fears' was a long time ago, as was 'The Hunt for Red October'. In this day and age, we've had 'The Bourne Identity' and 'Mission: Impossible', where action is a split second scene and non stop. Unfortunately, in order for any potential

Unfortunately, in order for any potential franchise to succeed in today, movies have to be made like this now. Let's just hope it's intelligent enough to warrant the Jack Ryan name and do justice to Tom Clancy. I'm hopeful but even if it doesn't live up to 'Red October' or 'Clear & Present Danger', at least it'll be one hell of a ride.

Looks good.

Did they license the opening bathroom fight from Casino Royale for this?

"We all have secrets. Don't we, Ethan?"

Haha, I can't believe they not only stole the line from a hugely popular film - but even put it in the trailer! (Which they also did for Ghost Protocol.) I mean, the movie looks good enough, but wow... talk about Paramount stealing from its own cookie jar.

Looks fun. Mainly excited for Kevin Costner's resurgence and Kenneth Branagh who I haven't seen in front of the camera in such a prominent role in quite some time. A crazy thought occurred to me though while watching this trailer: Keira Knightley is arguably the biggest star in this thing, which seems a little surreal.

Don't get me wrong, this looks good, but how is this Jack Ryan except in name only? Anyone know why they didn't just adapt Red Dawn if they wanted a younger Jack Ryan story?
Anyway, I'm definitely interested. More so confused.

Honestly, I'm not too familiar with the Jack Ryan series. Someone help me out? What makes a Jack Ryan film a Jack Ryan film. What are the elements that only Jack Ryan can have?

I think it was said best in Hunt for Red October. "I am not field personnel, I am only an analyst".
Jack Ryan is the anti action hero, a book worm that writes reports but often finds himself in the midst of the action.
The films by the way amped him up a lot, in the book Clear and Present Danger he only goes to Colombia once.

Jack Ryan was a low level CIA analyst with a fear of flying due to a helicopter accident when he was at the Naval Academy. He was also a professor, basically he's just an intellectual that found his way into fieldwork by accident and never enjoyed it and really was not good at it. He has a field operative friend that is more in line with what they have made this character in this trailer. It's a shame that we cant't just have a real Jack Ryan cat and mouse thriller movie like they did with Hunt

Yes, Yes, and Yes.

This looks great! I like Chris Pine always. Kevin Costner finally finds a movie and a role I will watch him in and a little excited to see also. And finally Keira Knighley is doing something non annoying (Pirates of the blah blah blah) and doesn't look like a play caught on camera. Looks great, very excited.

Getting a bit of a Bournce Legacy vibe from it - and I don't think that's a bad thing; as that film turned out surprisingly well. I'm looking forward to Kenneth Branagh as the Russian-accented villain and Kevin Costner as the bristly mentor. Never would've figured Branagh as an action-thriller director; I'm curious to see how he does it.

I'm a big Tom Clancy fan & really like the Jack Ryan character. Unfortunately I didn't find out about this flick being made until I read a story about Nancy's death yesterday. Now that I know, I'm looking forward to it for now.

Speaking as someone just finished watching a Jack Ryan movie...

I dont know. In the other movies he gets in on the action but only a little action. This is just a lil too heavy on the action for a character who was always just an analyst (CIA Director and President in the books). Looks pretty damn decent but if they wanted action heavy Tom Clancy I wouldve preferred a Splinter Cell or Rainbow 6 movie
