Here's your first look at Diablo Cody's directorial debut Paradise

Jul. 26, 2013by: Niki Stephens

I was recently pondering the whereabouts of Diablo Cody's directorial debut PARADISE (formerly known as LAMB OF GOD). The cast was an interesting mixed paired with a story about a girl who decides to break free of her strict religious upbringing after an accident leaves her terribly scarred.

USA Today had the first stills from the film, and the most outrageous thing you'll see here is Nick Offerman. I've seen the PARKS AND RECREATION actor without a beard but holy hell I had no clue that was him. Honestly, I thought it was the Dad from THE ADVENTURES OF PETE & PETE. The pictures show Julianne Hough with a ton of hair as Lamb who "has never kissed a boy, is not allowed to date and isn't allowed to dance". Cody says it's "about as biblical as it gets". Lamb heads to Las Vegas to get into a little trouble, and meets a bartender (Russell Brand) who is there for her first drinks.

When it comes to Cody, the only flick of hers that didn't get a second viewing from me was JENNIFER'S BODY. Like the rest of the Cody Catalog, I will check this one out as well.

PARADISE starring Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman, and Holly Hunter hits theaters October 18, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Hough apparently sings an amazing cover of Radiohead's "No Surprises" in the film.

Whoa! I thought that was David Koechner! While I have seen Offerman without beard OR mustache, I haven't seen him without hair before.

Nick Offerman

"I've seen the Park and Rec actor without a beard" Well, yeah, so has everyone. I think you meant moustache.

Was interested until you said Russell Brand was in it. So annoying and unfunny, no thanks.

so much prescience!

i had no idea so much could be divined from a name and a few still shots! this sucks? the actings bad? the writing/direction awful? wow, you guys should work for the FBI. Really.6 years ago, after Juno, Cody was a breath of fresh air, after Jennifer's Body, she was a pariah and no one bothered to see Young Adult, which was pretty decent. I lack such powers and will sadly have to wait for the trailer. Thanks for the heads up.

"about as biblical as it gets", haha, funny one Brook, whatever you say. I'll have to wait for a trailer to come out but the stills are as dull and boring as her writing.

I hope that we will finally get Russel Brand in a role who is actually interesting. I've never find anything he's done as interesting ever since Get Him to The Greek.

Good? Bad? Who knows..

Nick Offerman looks worthy of a ticket though. He looks fucking astounding. As for Diablo Cody, considering the derision, scorn and flat out hate a name can bring to a film we've seen all of seven frames of, it makes me wish the makers of a film were kept secret until the final credits roll. It would be nice for people to form an opinion based on the merits of the film itself.
And also the inevitable self loathing and hate spewing after people find out someone they hate made something loved

She is a horrible writer, now she can prove to be a horrible director.

Ugh, Diablo Cody is just everything that is wrong with movies these days. Hipster trash is not interesting or funny. She needs to go back to her day job and start stripping again because that is all she will ever be remembered as.

Once again, the overuse of the word "hipster" on display. This is such an annoying term that has lost all meaning because everything different is labeled with this word. I don't even know if there is a legitimate definition anymore. Juno had hip dialogue, but overall was simply a story of a girl dealing with her pregnancy. Young Adult, while not a great film, used far less of this style of dialogue, and Jennifer's Body suffered from bad directing but I don't know what's hipster about it.

I'm gonna reference a relatively obscure to general audiences director like Herschell Gordon Lewis to let everyone know I know who he is. Classic hipster move. Given I can't hold it against her since screenwriters like Quentin Tarantino have been doing it for years. It is possible she is just trying to emulate the greats who came before her. Or she's just full of herself. Who knows. I just spent way too much time on a reply.
