Hilarious red-band trailer for The Dictator is here to offend you

May. 7, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again and I'm all the happier for it.  He's a take it or leave it comedian, so this new red-band trailer may well offend some.  For my money, this is comedy gold.  I'm sure there will be some that don't enjoy the 9/11 humor and that's respectable, however I think it's fine in the context of this film. I think it's a unique satire of the stereotypes of our culture, which is something Cohen has been tackling since the beginning.

Anyway, here's the red-band hilarity:

I think this is kind of a bold comedy to be made as it's certainly not your run-of-the-mill formula.  We've seen the fish-out-of-water story done before, sure, but using a rather evil dictator as the "fish" I find it to be a refreshing take and one that dives into some uneasy moments for the audience, which I love.

It'll be fun to have some teeth-baring, cringe-worthy comedy out this summer amongst the tirade of big-budget bonanzas.

THE DICTATOR opens on May 16th, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: We need more John C. Reilly. I'm one of the many hoping for a Stepbrothers 2. Any other takers?

Nice!

i too was glad to see this went the more scripted route (though i pray the take-out-the-trash scene was not!) and this looks amazing. "Im sorry, its a girl. Where is the trashcan?"

Laughed my ass off. And is it just me, or Anna is looking even cuter than usual?

I like Sacha Baron Cohen, but I was growing weary of the faux-documentary films. 'Ali G indahouse' is still his funniest movie in my opinion, and I'm glad to see a return to that style of comedy.

Extra Tidbit: John C. Reilly rules. While another 'Step Brothers' would be awesome, I think I'd rather see another spoof movie a la 'Walk Hard'. That movie is a riot.

Yep, I'm gonna love it. Funniest trailer I've seen in quite a while.

A lot like the regular trailer, but still hilarious. I love that he pretty much takes everything from his character-based films and does the same for this narrative. I am wondering, however, how many people will cry about this movie because A. The central character is a dictator of a Mid East country and B. How much he makes fun of American ignorance in the movie. But it looks funny, can't wait.

Aside from John C. Reilly, I haven't seen much in this directed at American ignorance. I'm sure he'll take some jabs though.

No one complained about You Don't Mess With the Zohan. If anything i would believe Americans would probably find something more offensive considering how oversensitive & PC we have gotten.

Tidbit: No offense...

But I hated Stepbrothers. I guess I'm not one of those "many" people...

This film is more and more looking like a precious slice of laughter that is otherwise missing in this summer overcrowded with bombastic action movies. And no, an Adam Sandler "comedy" doesn't count.

I dug the 911 bit.

But the "take out the trash" bit killed me. I don't know why, it's so stupid. I just really want to do that when I go into NYC.

Love the scene when he just slaps the rude customer. So many times I wish I could do that at my job.
