Holy batarang! Batman 3 is coming in 2012

04.30.2010

So you want to know when you're going to get to see the next BATMAN film?

Well, Warner Bros. has set the third film in the franchise to release on July 20, 2012 in conventional and IMAX screens. The announcement was made this morning in regards to the series.

No other details were given.

Wow. I figured that maybe they would release in 2013 or something. There's been so few details on the third installment. For awhile it sounded like a follow-up film was never going to get made.

Christopher Nolan did talk with the LA Times back in March about the next film saying, “Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story. And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”

He continued about the conclusion, “I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.”

The rumors will now start to flood...as if they weren't already. Miley Cyrus for Catwoman! (It's just a joke. Calm down.)

Extra Tidbit: Remember: No Mr. Freeze.

oh yessssss

i for one am happy there´s a release date already, it means the movie´s finally getting under wa, as far as nolan´s statement about this being the last batman movie, i have to respectfully disagree, i think batman still has "wings" to fly, at least for another 2 or 3 movies.

so, here´s me hoping i was just pulling our chain :P

So happy to hear this. Here's hoping they just leave the Joker out as any attempt to involve him in the plot would most likely taint what the achieved with him in the last one. The Riddler could work, and I could see the Penguin as some kind of mob boss or black market arms dealer. The Philip Seymour Hoffman rumor that went arount ahile ago would be great, but he'd probably never do it. In any case I'm not worried as long as the franchise is in Nolan's ever dependable hands. Can't wait

since batman is still dealing with the mob and now that harvey dent is now two-face im thinking black mask with the riddler or the Ventriloquist with the riddler

if Nolan wants to end it with a Trilogy then so be it. Far for me to disagree with him to continue when you can end the movie with a bang and glory and not drag it out with 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 where we see no end to it. thankfully if WB keeps its head out of their asse it wont be release as 3-D

I don't think we're lacking for Batman media, films or otherwise, at this point. If Nolan can make three great movies and call it quits, then good for him.

Ending Batman's story after only three films is such a douchbag move. It's like Nolan knows that every fanboy has his dick in their mouth, and he wants to see how bad he can fuck them over before they stop sucking.

The Batman films should keep going despite what a pretentious ego-maniac director thinks about it. Batman is not his to just end. There is way too much rich history in Batman's Mythology to end everything just as the movies have only begun to scratch the surface.

You really, really did not understand the quote.

"... we want to finish OUR story." They want to finish the story they started, not completely end Batman's story!

Why would WB accept to end that franchise?

It was this quote:

"Unlike the comics, these thing don't go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful."

That sounds to me like he wants to end the whole thing. I hope you're right, I really do.

I find it rather peculiar that your Thumbs Up/Down DRASTICALLY alters within the hours. Once you get a bunch of lows (deservedly so, IMO), coincidentally a bunch of supporters come out of the woodwork to a thread that's pretty much been dead all day. You, uh, deleting History in your browser and thumbing up yourself, Loblaw? There's far more appropriate places to thumb.

I've personally been checking back here to see if anyone would stand up to the ignorant ass, juvenile, back-wards fuck

You, uh, deleting History in your browser and thumbing up yourself, Loblaw? There's far more appropriate places to thumb.

I've personally been checking back here to see if anyone would stand up to the ignorant ass, juvenile, back-wards fuck accusation you made. Guess that'll have to be me.

"It's like Nolan knows that every fanboy has his dick in their mouth, and he wants to see how bad he can fuck them over before they stop sucking"

-- ?? So Chris Nolan's scouring the nets to make sure he's got fans hooked, reeled, and ready for an ass fuck? He's scribbling down story notes with his brother, snickering, "Oh man, this shit's REALLY gonna piss 'em off!!"? What an absurdly petty and idiotic thing to assume.

"Batman's not his to end" -- well, uh, this trilogy is his to end. And if that takes killing the Batman to reach an appropriately dramatic end, then bring it the fuck on. These guys established a brand of gritty realism unique to comic book movies and have really cracked open worlds of potential for future filmmakers. They should be able to end it how THEY want to, and fans should be trusting that it's right for the series they've created. Yeah, WB would fight such a bold move as straight-up ending the trilogy. Hell, they'd probably win and lock the Nolans into a Raimi-esque corner 'til they pleaded "Venom." But it doesn't make it fair or right that the sole focus of filmmaking isn't STORY. (We should be lucky WB/the Nolans are even producing this third film, what with "Reboot" being the headlines this year.)

It's impatient, chafed-dick fanboys that are selfish enough to say shit like this. "Oh, he should leave it open so Batman can go on forever! Oh, woe is me and my bat tights!" Batman WILL continue, without question, BECAUSE of its vast and rich library of characters and story lines. It's just going to be different interpretations and re-imaginings.

Fuck stretching it out or leaving with an ambiguous endings to open up for leeching, half-ass directors to piggyback on the Nolans' work. If these guys want to back out and close off the possibility of douche bag imitators soiling a quality trilogy, good for them. I personally wouldn't want a repeat of X-Men/Ratnergate either.

It's funny how people laud the Nolans and the success of the first two films, and then call for their heads if they fuck with the franchise. You like what they've delivered before, so let 'em fucking do it and shut up already.

The focus of this (hopefully LAST) film should be to provide a tight story that escalates from the first two, but provides a fitting bookend to the trilogy with NO RESTRAINTS in regards to future films. I hope to high heavens they take the bold step and bring about a solid and indisputable conclusion.

i like the idea that once this film ends, this series is over. we'll finally have a real superhero trilogy that doesn't leave us hanging like hmm i wonder what they'll come up with next.

Nah man. I'm with you, mostly. I didn't like Dark Knight, because it took itself way too seriously for having a protagonist in a bat suit. I would have bought into it more if he wore a ski mask and SWAT helmet, rather than a bat mask. Batman Begins teetered on the edge of too serious, but didn't fall over like Dark Knight did.

Thanks for the support! I was kinda expecting it ;o) Anyway I think the only good thing in the Nolan franchise was Heath Ledger. But other than that I don't like the approach at all. Like Red4 says, it takes itself way to seriously and clever (which it's not) and I don't like the realistic approach. It's still a comic book adaptation and I don't get why you can keep some of the comic style. Also I don't like Gotham city. In the first one it's pretty much always the same settings.

Ironically I love Christian Bale in almost everything he played so far ( "american psycho" and "Rescue dawn" being my favourites) but he is kind of bland as Batman. For me a mixture between Burton and Nolan would make it.

Hey and by the way: I didn't like Avatar either....

I couldn't agree more. Not only is Bane far more powerful than Batman, he's also his intellectual equal. Either they go with him or completely adapt The Dark Knight Returns storyline, and I think we have something that'll really top TDK.

I would also love to see Bane in service to a bigger villain, a crime-lord like Black Mask, but Bane is no idiot this time and has his own agenda.

They could also introduce a Joker-inspired gang, led by Harley, sort of a precursor to The Mutants in Dark Knight Returns.

Awesome-est News....

What a way to start my day. This news is awesome. I guess I better get that calendar out now. I have a strong feeling Nolan will recast The Joker. It's obvious he was meant to live on into the third film. J.G.Levitt maybe? That aside, I have faith in the Nolans and I'm sure that no matter what they do, the third Batman will be BIGGER and BETTER than The Dark Knight, as impossible as that sounds. This will be one of those rare third acts that don't screw up an entire franchise. Can't wait!

DARK KNIGHT RETURNS?

Hope this finishes Nolans story but leaves the world open for future installment's. BATMAN'S world is far to BIG to be contained in just 3 films and they should get another great filmaker in charge with a new cast and new vision after Nolan finishes the 3rd installment.

I am glad Nolan is ending the story. Why anyone would want to keep this thing open for another director to fuck up is beyond me. I would love to see more interpretations of Batman beyond the Nolan universe. I would love to see Snyder do The Dark Knight Returns although the title would confuse the shit out of everyone because they will link it to Nolan's Dark Knight. I am very stoked about the next Batman but I would also love to see a Batman universe where we can see Mr. Freeze and Clayface and

Because it's Batman, Nolan does not own Batman. Just because he told two good Batman stories does not mean he can just fuck over the character by ending his story just as it got started (Hell, his Batman doesn't even have the Batcave yet).

Batman should keep on going just like James Bond. If Nolan does end Batman then he'll have Alien 3 on his hands.

Also, if he ends it we'll have to deal with yet another reboot/remake five years down the road. Nolan will seriously fuck up everything if

Do you really not understand what Nolan is saying? He wants to finish his story of Batman not finish Batmans story as in killing him off or having him retire. No, hes not going to do those things. Even though he doesn't own Batman, he owns his trilogy and he can tell his story any way he pleases. There have been plenty of interpretations of Batman over the years and this is just his. Burton had his Schumacher had his and now Nolan has his version. Look what happened to Burtons version though,

Nolan shouldn't have to leave his open for WB to let in another director to destroy it. And as I said, I think once Nolan is done, Batman should be rebooted so we can see other directors interpretations on Batman. Besides I thought you said Dark Knight was filled with plot holes but now you say it is good?

I have nothing but the upmost faith in Nolan and can't wait to see what's in store. Hopefully the build up to this one is as fun as it was with TDK. And hopefully we can trust Nolan NOT to put it in 3-D.

To those who think Two-Face is dead...

If you think Two Face is dead, you don't understand the ending of Dark Knight. The funeral was for Harvey. He was their White Knight. For the regular citizens of Gotham to know Harvey Dent is Two Face would give them no hope in society. While "harvey" may be dead. Two-Face is still alive and will be in 3.

Nice Surprise!

Wow great news. Too bad no more Joker. Well...there better be CATWOMAN[make us forget 2004 catwoman please].

Or Harley Quinn. They could say she's trying to break Joker out, or something. Joker could be in without actually appearing, because honestly they can't get a new actor to do what he did, it will only be a disappointment.

2012!!!

I'm not surprised by the release date, Nolan will have plenty of time to get the right story together and an amazing marketing campaign. I can not wait for this! As for the villain, have the Scarecrow make another appearance and the Riddler needs to be the villain.

This is great news since I wasn't expecting it until 2013 but then again it is hard to believe TDK came out 2 years ago. A 4 year range is pretty long for a sequel. I really think in this new one Nolan will include many bad guys showing an outbreak of freaks in the city with possible the Riddler as the main bad guy. But that is just a theory. I hope nobody kills this movie though like many did with their Joker costumes for TDK.

BATMAN: THE END

While DC only has us excited for it's Batman franchise and not so much it's Green Lantern film, Marvel has us psyced for IRON MAN 2, THOR, Captain America and The Avengers, now what's wrong with that picture...?

Trilogies are sooooooooooooo overrated. Do an effin series. Harry Potter? Bond? Black Mask would be sweet and Perfect for this bat-world.

I was aware that a reboot was all about fixing past mistakes... so I'd welcome the introduction of Mr Freeze to the mix, I find him totally threedimensional and cool...

But it'd be sweet if 2face came back

Arnold ruined our chances of ever getting a redo of Mr. Freeze. But his story would be sweet to watch if done right, with like Jeffrey Combs or some shit. Realistically it'd be kickass if Joker returned with a different actor and Two-Face wasn't dead. Black Mask or Penguin as a mob boss moving in on the new territory and like Bane and Scarecrow or even Talia Ta Ghul (who once associated with Bane so that wouldn't be so far fetched.) Thatd be my ideal set up.

Batman Begins is BRILLIANT, and is probably my favorite superhero film, BUT

holy shit, Nolan's Batman films are so overrated it's ridiculous. Nolan's done better (Memento, Prestige), and Bale's been A LOT better (American Psycho, The Machinist), but if anyone knocks either of these Batman films in just the slightest way, they get treated like they kicked a baby. It really is insane.

Don't get me wrong, I will run to the theater to see the 3rd, and I love the other two a LOT, but I just can't stand all the nerdgasms TDK has caused, when there is so much out there

If it were the end, as some are speculating, they should go all out, blow up Bruce Wayne's secret identity, he fights it out to the death with Two Face, Hush, Bane and Black Mask.

That would be the ideal concluding movie for me at least!

Nice. Nice. I'd like to see The Riddler. Catwoman and perhaps Batgirl. I have a story in my head on how I'd want that to turn out but either way, I have faith we'll see something bad ass.

Stay golden!

This will complete the circle. Two-Face will be running around, Talia will be the main baddie but may hide her true identity for a while.

Since this is the end of the trilogy, why would Nolan introduce such characters as Robin and Catwoman? Use your brains, geeks!

Well ALRIGHTY THEN!!!

It really is time to start the countdown isnt it? I can't wait for another Dark Knight movie. Now we just have to hear what Villains we're getting in this installment. My Opinion...Catwoman definitely..and maybe Hush, Riddler, Harley Quinn, Penquin, Poison Ivy, more Scarecrow, Bane, Deadshot, Black Mask, Rupert Thorn, or whoever else may come to mind. Bottom Line, I'm ready for this and I'm sure the rest of the world is ready for another return to Gotham City. Who knows, maybe this movie will

I'm gonna be honest.

I see no reason why Mr. Freeze couldn't be in Nolan's Bat-Universe, or why any character couldn't. Who cares if it is "hyper-real", both Nolan's are clever enough to make those fantastical concepts believable enough.

Thumbs up for no 3D!

I'm ok with the world ending in Dec. 2012 because I will have seen the final Nolan batman installment. His comments about ending the story implies the Joker will probably be back. After Ledger's death there was talk of changing the story to leave him out, but as much as I'll miss Heath in the role I think the movie (and trilogy) will be better if Nolan makes it as he originally intended.

Olivia Wilde was basically born to play the part. She's absolutely perfect for it.

I don't think it's the END.

I think this is simply Nolan's last, and the end of this "loner" story arc, and the beginning of the age of the super-villains in Gotham(which the Joker really put into effect). We have to face it, there are some great stories involving Robin, but I've always said Batman should have at least a trilogy as a loner. I just hope they bring back the Joker(Joseph Gordon-Levitt please!) and introduce Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

However, let us say that Nolan finishes this Batman story and characterization, this Legend of the Dark Knight, in audiences' minds definitively. speculation

I think the Penguin would work really well in this world, as a part of the organized crime underworld. I also think you pretty much have to have Harley Quinn involved to close up the Joker loose end.

hmmm

Of course I'm very anxious to see another Nolan Batmovie. I am a little worried that it is slated to come out so soon...hopefully Nolan was on board with that. Also it sounds a lot like he wants to END the story, i.e. have a "conclusion" for Batman, rather than just having him save the day and be his crime-fighting self at the end. I worry that he will try to make something final (like death or retirement). That would not sit well with me.

I really hope that Nolan means that he is going to finish HIS Batman origin story, because if he is talking about ending Batman's story as a whole then he can go fuck himself.

Couldn't agree more. Let Nolan exit with the third film, but keep option for someone else to continue. Nolan created the universe, sequel without him is far better than another reboot ...

Dark Knight disappears?

Nolan discusses finishing the story. And, finishing the tale realistically. I wonder if Batman winds up dead, imprisoned, or institutionalized? I do not like those denouements. However, Nolan took the plot bravely into grim and provocative territory in The Dark Knight. And, Miller's first Dark Knight saga ends with Batman disappearing. Other scribes have paralyzed Batman (Bane, a realistic villain) or killed him (whatever story arc happened recently; ?Battle for the Cape?).

In any case, I intend to see this film. SuperheroHype reports that Spider-Man's reboot precedes 7/20 by two weeks. Sounds fun. And, if Spidey's reboot is for the kiddies; then, Nolan's Bats should contrast and balance nicely.

SWEET!

This is awesome! I can't wait for this movie to come out and what Nolan and company are going to do with this finale. I do hope they have a great script and good villans to make this a great conclusion to a superb trilogy. I know that the final part of trilogies don't have the best track record, but I do hope I'm proven wrong here. I was also reading on BOF (Batman on Film) that Christopher Nolan doesn't like the 3D fad right now and would be open to filming it all in IMAX. That would be
