Updated: Joss Whedon to direct and write a Batgirl solo film!

03.30.2017

Update: Entertainment Weekly is reporting that that this version will be Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon, and the movie will use the DC Comics “New 52” version of the character as a starting point.

It’s unclear as to how much of that series, written by Gail Simone, will be incorporated into Whedon’s film, but sources tell EW the movie will follow Simone’s gritter storyline rather than the more fanciful, niche 'Batgirl of Burnside' series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media savvy student living in the hipster-ridden neighborhood of Gotham's Williamburg, New York-like Burnside.

Ladies and gentlemen, my Batcomputer is blowing up over here with the extraordinarily exciting news that Joss Whedon is nearing a deal with Warner Bros. to write, direct and produce an untitled BATGIRL standalone film as part of the DC Extended Universe!

For the moment, no other producers have been named or attached to the project. However, Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer over at Warner Bros. will oversee the project in collaboration with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. Obviously, this news comes as a bit of a surprise, seeing as plans for the film began in just the past month.

This also marks a big change in direction for Whedon, who had been instrumental in laying the foundation of Marvel's cinematic universe after having written and directed THE AVENGERS and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. As the project comes together, BATGIRL will mark DC's second film to star a female lead after Gal Gadot's WONDER WOMAN (opening in theaters on June 2, 2017).

So far, there is no word as to whether BATGIRL will adhere to a previous incarnation of the Barbara Gordon character, or if Wheadon will find the more recent "Batgril of Burnside" persona to appeal more to his sensibilities for penning characters that are chock-full of sass and finely-tuned brain matter.

You guys, I am so excited about this that I can barely keep my fingers on the keys! I am a huge Barbara Gordon/Batgirl fan and could not be more stoked to hear of someone like Whedon jumping the movie studio fence to make this happen. We'll be sure to report on the details of this project as they roll out. In the meantime, be sure to read either Gail Simone's BATGIRL run or the BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE series from creators Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher and Babs Tarr.

Meanwhile, you can check out DC's other heroes when JUSTICE LEAGUE smashes into theaters on November 17, 2017.

Extra Tidbit: In addition to protecting Gotham and Burnside, Barbara Gordon has also held positions as a librarian and politician in Washington D.C.

No

I dont want DC to look or feel anything like Marvel.. Let the Marvel Fans have their universe, and let DC work on theirs. WB should wait to see how WW dose in theatres, then if it dose well then let Patty Jenkins do BatGirl instead of taking Whedon.

I think Whedon nailed the first Avengers (AOU had too much studio interference and future film set up), and his work on Buffy makes him seem like he could do Batgirl justice as well. I'm excited for this and keeping my expectations in check.

Wonder if they'll have the balls to do the Killing Joke live action at some point and turn Barb into Oracle. Nah that wouldn't fit the SJW agenda.

The only version of batgirl I have ever seen is from the 60s batman show where she was Barbara Gordon, the commissioners daughter...I would love to see this movie, but I hope its set in an earlier time, perhaps 70s or 80s, and have it be a neo-noir take, but I guess if its apart of the "universe" then they cant do that...although they could pull a days of future past and just have her shoot into the future for Justice League 2

Hopefully this means a Nightwing and Batgirl intro in the Matt Reeves Batman film and WB/DC doesn't continue to skip the proper set up due diligence in their films. We need a Bat-Family type of film first so Batman's integral involvement in those characters' story doesn't overshadow them in their own films.

Lol

I love how so many people are calling a Batgirl film pointless..you people obviously have no knowledge of the character if you think she's pointless or nothing without Batman. She's one of the most beloved characters in the DC universe.

I think my profile pic shows that I'm certainly not a DC hater, but honestly if Whedon's going to do another superhero film I really wish it was with Marvel. They treated him like absolute junk with Avengers 2, but it seems like they've learned their lesson and given the Russo Brothers, James Gunn and Scott Derrickson a great deal of autonomy on their films and they all seemingly have nothing but good things to say about the company and are happy to keep working with them. Whedon had a great experience with Marvel on Avengers 1, and I think if he did a 3rd film with them he'd have a great experience again. DC has a stellar lineup of future directors at this point but based on Suicide Squad and Flash it seems like they're currently exhibiting the sort of micro-management behavior that turned Whedo away from Marvel in the first place.

If you can't beat em, hire em!! So DC knows they have made nothing but shit films and starts hiring Marvel directors?? Makes sense to me. Hopefully they will have their first decent movie in the new expanded shitverse. And Gibsoncr1 is a biiiiiiiitch.

I'm famous. Ha ha ha ha ha! Its the 34-yr-old man baby who will be eating his words soon enough. Considering what a shitstorm it was for Whedon on Avengers 2, he must have been very happy with what DC had to offer in terms of creativity. Unlike the [link] Marvel. The fact that even Whedon is changing teams makes you look pretty idiotic sitting on the pot there fuuuuuuuuuuckeee.

I'm excited for this news. The fact that they are attempting to build the bat family is an exciting prospect. Opens a lot of doors for future story arcs. And I like the idea of a cinematic Batman that has not been doing this with only Alfred to assist over 20+ years. I know we were given the dead Robin costume but until the announcement of Nightwing there was always the possibility that costume belonged to the one and only Robin.

Does Batgirl need her own film? Probably not at this point.

But if there's going to be one, then Joss Whedon is the man for the job.
In fact, I wish he was doing Gotham City Sirens too...

... to be fair, loving both the Avengers films as much as I do, I'm still worried I'll miss his writing style in Infinity War, but for now, ill give the benefit of the doubt to those in charge.

Great.

After all the crap Marvel put Joss Whedon through, you know he wouldn't sign onto something like this without some sort of assurances or deal, so I am VERY excited about this. Good on DC.

Frankly, if Wheadon is going to do a big budget studio superhero movie, i want it to be with the MCU. But thats just me being selfish. i get that he doesnt want to do Avengers stuff anymore, but id rather see him doing smaller, original work than switch to a studio with a pale record.

im sure the movie will be fine, but im not on the edge of my seat waiting

Would prefer many DC characters over Batgirl, but with her solo success in comics and in other media like DC SuperHeroGirls, I see why WB is going there. This is DC/WB's chance to reach many audiences (young people, females, comicbook fans) but also older fans with Whedon involved.
If the movie gets made, this could a big win for DC.

I hope this happens

Joss Whedon is brilliant at writing for female characters, and he proved he can deliver a blockbuster with THE AVENGERS. Since Marvel/Disney was foolish enough to ruin that relationship, let's hope WB/DC has the smarts to stay out of his way.

Traitor!!

Just kidding. I think the guy has talent, but I don't see this "sticking". He will get tired of being told what direction to take Batgirl (probably too dark to see anything) and give up due to "scheduling conflicts" or some BS.

DC takes chances...and I love it

All I can really muster is, "cool.....curious how he will make her relevant". I like Whedon, but I'm not worshipper of his. His best moment in cinema for me will always be Hulk punching the shit out of Thor after they take out that giant flying "Thing" from Avengers. That was absolutely perfect. So, do you think he will keep this in the DC style of realism or do you think it will be more playful and poppy?

Marvel movies are less than what they were bud. Taking a chance is giving Whedon the Batgirl. That is what I mean by taking a chance. I have a strong feeling they will set up some simple rules to fit in this universe and leave him alone. The only way he would have taken this was if he had freedoms not granted with Marvel execs.
You should put your head up DC's ass too! We are all climbing in at this point. :)

Batgirl is nothing without Batman. Who here has read a Batgirl-only comic? I don't see the appeal.

Why not a Nightwing standalone instead? Fans are actually clamoring for that. Oh, that's right -- feminism and stuff.

Meant to say, why not have a big name director like Whedon do a Nightwing standalone, instead of McKay who hasn't done anything outside of animation? Guess I'm answering my own question, seeing as Whedon prides himself on strong female heroes and is on paper perfect for this project.

Point is I just don't think Batgirl works without Batman, and if Batman is involved he might overshadow her. Curious to see how Spider-Man: Homecoming plays out with the dynamic between Spidey and Stark. Then

Nice score for WB/DC. Whedon knows how to portray strong female characters so this is perfect. Curious if this development had something to do with The Batman rewrite. I say make a few tonal corrections and keep plowing ahead DCEU!

This could become a very interesting project. A big name director known to be able to handle superhero films doing a project that does not HAVE to be a huge mega budget project. Certainly an interesting character too.

Glad to see Whedon directing another comic book film and having him back in the genre. It's just that if he had to direct a comic book with a female in the lead, I was sort of hoping for Black Widow or even Captain Marvel.

But very happy to see DC signing some great directors like Reeves, Vaughn, and now Whedon for their upcomg slate. Should be exciting to see who he casts as Batgirl.

A Whedon favorite Eliza Dushku would have been good had this been some years back. She's a bit too old for the part now, which leaves Betty White out of the question unfortunately.

Good to see Whedon back in the world of comics, just a damn shame he's defecting to the dark side that is WB/DC. We'll see how badly DC messes with the film, or if Whedon even ends up making it, based on their current run of directors saying "nah f*** this"
