How would you feel if Star Trek Into Darkness was Zachary Quinto's last turn as Spock?

11.20.2012

Star Trek cast 656

UPDATE: Quinto himself just posted this to his Twitter account: "simmer down kids. rumors are rumors for a reason. quotes out of context. let's let the second movie come out before we talk about a third..."

I may just be reading too much into this, and I would hate to be a part of rumor-mongering, but I've always found journalism to reward the "better safe than sorry" approach. And so: in a recent interview with EW about his recent turns in "American Horror Story", Zachary Quinto capped things off with a comment that seems it could very well imply that he intends for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS to be his last turn as Spock.

"While the Asylum experience has been rewarding, Quinto says he’s also ready to 'go in a different direction' with his career after Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters next summer. 'It’s like an era of association with certain roles – a specific part like Spock, or a kind of part, like Sylar — is coming to an end,' he says. 'I think it’s safe to say this will be the last serial killer I’ll be playing for the foreseeable future.'"

I happened to absolutely love the first film in J.J. Abrams' reboot series, plot holes/leaps of logic and all (and somewhat forgivable as they were due to the Writer's Strike). While everyone is using THE AVENGERS as their template for team interaction these days, I would say that I think Abrams' TREK absolutely nailed it first. And while STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will (obviously) voyage into darker territory, I imagine that camaraderie and fun and adventure will still be there. The crew will still be together. But is that about to change? Will we get a third film, or would Quinto's potential absence preclude that? Would you even want one? Sound off below about what you think, and don't forget that STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS arrives on May 17th, 2013.

Zoe Saldana in black dress on bed

More of Zoe Saldana as Uhura, please!

Extra Tidbit: If you're a fan of "American Horror Story", I'd definitely recommend checking out the entire interview (though beware of SPOILERS, of course). Interested though I am, I haven't had a chance to check out the show myself yet. Too much good TV I'm missing out on as it is...

I am not reading this to mean he is quitting Spock. It sounds more like there is a character type that he is looking to avoid in future projects.

Actually no, not happy about that at all. After only two films? He's a terrific Spock and really needs to stick around in my opinion. The current cast is perfect.

Well, I certainly hope he's not recast. He was a very good Spock in Star Trek '09, and I look forward to seeing him in "Into Darkness", but I think whether he continues as the character depends on whether he has signed a contract for further films. I think it would hurt the chemistry of the whole crew has if Spock was recast, and all the other actors remained.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan killed-off Spock in that franchise's second movie. Perhaps, the reboot franchise does the same. Such homage would be okay. And, a dead Spock changes the team's good dynamic in interesting and new ways.

Relax guys....

Zachary Quinto recently took to Twitter to announce that his quotes were taken out of context and not to believe the rumors. Pretty much a non-story from the beginning.

Quinto would be insane to drop Star Trek

that's the sort of situation any working actor would kill for: starring in a successful franchise run by an extremely competent director/producer. He's great in the role and it would be a shame if they were forced to recast.

When Quinto first signed on, he should have assumed people would want him to reprise the role several times, he should have turned it down if he wasn't up for it. Leonard Nimoy played the role for over 40 years, and Quinto maybe done after 2 movies? He's not exactly an Oscar winning actor, I don't know what direction he thinks he's gonna go.

I would be stunned if he didn't have some sort of contractual obligation regarding a multi-film commitment extending beyond just two films. Star Trek is a franchise property for Paramount. I can't imagine any of the actors playing core characters even being offered the role if they weren't willing to commit to multiple films if the sequels were green-lit by the studio.

You need to commit

I think it's a shame. To me, if you're going to go out for a role such as Spock, you accept that it's for a longer haul than most roles. No one signs on to be James Bond for only one or two movies (George Lazenby aside), afterall. He should do at least three - make it a solid trilogy.

I'm a big fan of everything Trek, and I also loved how Abrams brought Trek back in a much more modern and approchable way! I'd hate for this to end, and I'd also hate to see re-casting! :( ..and also, when the hell will we see a new Trek series, C'mon!!!

I'm not worried about it.

How many times did Leonard Nimoy say " this is going to be my last movie". Except for the first one, every single one.

It's not unfathomable that actors like Quinto, Daniel Craig, and others who took on big iconic roles, fail to sometimes understand the sacrifice and and commitment expected by fans. They're only human.

Trek is not the same without Spock, he needs to be there for the whole run. Maybe he's just angling for them to back a brinks truck up to his door.

lol so basically he doesn't want a career then?

Heroes was overrated and is dead. Without Star Trek there's really no reason to pay attention to him.

What a way to piss of Star Trek fans

Let's hope it's not true - but if it has to be, the writers could just J. J. Abrams his ass - such as bring Nimoy back into the story, realizing that Spock's mother was a different human woman than she was supposed to be and that that may be more of a factor to Vulcan's distruction than he (the real Spock) directly was. So, they reset the Trek timeline AGAIN, save Vulcan, and get somebody who is actually eager and honored to play Spock. That'll fix his little red wagon. I hate it when actors

I hate it when actors get this holier than thou attitude and shun one of their most important roles. Let's hope Quinto was speaking with an unintentional example. However, I still see him as Sylar and he needs at least two more Trek films before I can erase that from my head.
