Howard vs. Lovecraft

03.26.2009

Ron Howard Universal and Imagine Entertainment have bought the rights to Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz' as yet unreleased graphic novel "The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft" and are looking to Ron Howard to direct. The story apparently "borrows elements from Lovecraft’s life, such as his family’s struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer’s block, and transforms the young writer’s darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world." The book will be released April 8th. Carter is expected to write the script and serve as executive producer alongside Blitz. Howard's latest directorial effort, the Dan Brown adapted thriller starring Tom Hanks' hair, ANGELS & DEMONS is set for release May 15th.

Extra Tidbit: Howard has directed 8 different actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Don Ameche, Dianne Wiest, Ed Harris, Kathleen Quinlan, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Giamatti, and Frank Langella.

Shocking...

...that with all of the amazing stories they could have used written by Lovecraft himself they chose to base it on a comic. If Cthulhu is in it, I'm Game.

WHAT?!

Didn't anyone watch Back Draft? Give Howie a chance! He's had more hit's than misses, so wtf. I'd give it a watch.

Interesting...

H.P. Lovecraft is my all time favorite writer. I'm kinda bummed that this movie is based on an IMAGE comic, but I hope it is good. A good chance to show the world just how fun Lovecraft can be. Open the doors for Del Toro perhaps with MOUNTAINS...

The only reason this is a bad idea is because Ron Howard is involved. Is it just me, or is Howard one of the most over rated directors of our time?

I'll reserve judgement for now, but as a lifelong HPL fan I'll watch this space.

Sounds a tiny bit like "Out of Mind" which played a bit on HPL as a character in an HPL-inspired movie.

Hard to know what to think, when so many bad movies have been made out of HPL's works.

Potentially, the basic story of H. P. Lovecraft's life is perfect material for an interesting fiction-meets-reality tale (in a MISS POTTER/FINDING NEVERLAND fashion). However, if Ron Howard directs it, it will make him seem like some kind of headcase, and will reduce him to something of a joke.

NO to Howard!!

There are few directors more boring than Opie, so I guess we'll just have to sit back and hope Del Toro beats him to the punch, or else the public perception of Lovecraft might be ruined by Howard's impressive ability to turn everything he touches into bland, uninspired trash.
