Hugh Jackman and giant robot ready to go a few rounds in Real Steel poster

Aug. 30, 2011by:

It's hard to remember the last time I was this skeptical of a movie's premise, but I suppose I can't be anything but surprised if REAL STEEL actually turns out to be good.

Fighting robots is one thing, but boxing robots? It seems like another notch or two up the ridiculous scale. This new poster for REAL STEEL shows Jackman in fighting form with his robot buddy (Atom?) in tow.

From the trailer we learn it's a punching back robot trained to actually hit back, and the process of transforming him into a fighter unites Jackman and his estranged son.

Is it just me...

...or does everyone feel a bit sorry for Hugh Jackman? You can see that he really puts genuine effort into his roles, but those roles just end up backfiring on him. Like Wolverine. Nobody would have stuck around after X3 yet there's Jackman ready to be Logan for the FIFTH time, even after the disaster that was X-Men Origins! And then there's this Real Steel stuff. Really, Hugh? This could have had anyone from Matthew Broderick to Ioan Grufudd to The Rock to Vin Diesel to Tobey f##king Maguire

It didn't need Hugh Jackman. Plus, from what we've seen, he seems like a pretty decent fella. That makes me feel sorry for him all the more. Sure he gets paid a truckload of cash but still. Who would put real effort into Real Steel. Answer : No one.

Sorry, felt like going on a lil' rant there. I'm okay now, people.

@Falock01: I'm sorry but I think you're being a lil' too naive. Directors like Joe Johnston have admitted to making movies for the paycheck alone *cough Wolfman cough*. Actors do it all the time. That's why I feel sorry for Jackman. It's obvious he loves his craft and loves his roles. Also obvious that he isn't strapped for cash. He keeps bringing so much passion to roles like Wolverine that it's so sad to see it backfire like it has before. Director problems, script issues, etc. Johnny Depp

Make them play the role in a clusterf##k like X-Men Origins and they'll be out the door the moment you say "sequel", and for good reason.

your whole rant is based on the idea he doesn't want to do this, first of all he loves wolverine he has said as long as they keep asking he will return to play the part he loves the character, and all an actor can do is put in their best performances they are not writers or directors, also most actors choose roles they think will be, fun, challenging or rewarding, (all this is from personal experience) I honestly believe there are no roles out there done for the cheque you can't pay anyone

I agree, this could have been made with a variety of different actors in the role. It shouldn't hurt his career any though. Not a huge blockbuster, but a decent enough return at the box office.

I'm still looking forward to another Wolverine movie, the Japan storyline is a good one. After that though, I feel he should let that character go.

And yes, he does seem like a decent fellow.

.............Or maybe he isn't a snob and just loves his job. He's able to see the positives in whatever garbage you think he's spewing.

Like you said, it's for the paycheck. He got $20 million for Origins and he probably got close to that for Real Steel. The guy holds his head high by giving stellar performances on Broadway for relatively low pay, then lives the good life thanks to the checks and royalties he makes from movies like this. I think most actors could live with themselves for the right amount of money.

This is the type of movie you loved when you were 7 and watched it when you were 20 and realized that it was bad and you felt sorry for you parents because you put it on tv every other day.

how is it rated PG-13 and not PG? And they wonder why horror & action movie fans don't want PG-13 movies. No one wants to watch a horror/action movie that is as rough as a movie about boxing robots.

Yet another underdog boxing movie. What's the point of seeing it? We know exactly what will happen.

You know I really hate when big robots fight each other in movies. Thats a real turn off. Oh, wait, no its not! I LOVE ROBOTS THAT FIGHT!!!!
I dont get the hate for this movie. I mean really you dont want to see robots fighting? I mean anytime something remotely neat comes out, ppl get all pissy.
Jackman I like him. He has done Wolverine 5 times, not too may people (outside Japan) stick with a character that long. Keaton, Reeve, Bale, Tobe, even some Bonds you have to give him some

He has never turned in a bad performance and I think he is a likable guy. So I will be seeing this movie and it will be fun. Its not gonna change my world, but I didnt ask it too.

Great Movie!

I saw this movie a couple months ago at a screening. And like a lot of people I thought it looked stupid.
But It was actually really good. Jackman gives a great performance along with the rest of the cast. The relationship with him and his son is really great.
If people loved TRANSFORMERS, then they will love this movie.
REAL STEEL has a better story than TRANSFORMERS though.

Hugh Jackman is one of my favorites, and his acting chops never let down. Even in a bad film, he always looks good. I like this poster!

The story is very loosely based on one of the best Twilight Zone episodes ever with Lee Marvin..but this movie just looks like junk for the mind.
