Hugh Jackman confirms The Wolverine 3 will be his last time playing Logan

05.07.2015

Back in February, Hugh Jackman said he never wanted to stop playing Wolverine. Mainly, he was emphasizing how important the role was to him but he clearly knew the end of the line would come at some point. Then, in March, Jackman shared a photo indicating "one last time" as Wolverine. Since then, we have been wondering if he was serious or not. Now we know for sure that James Mangold's sequel to THE WOLVERINE will be Jackman's final appearance on film as the character.

ComicBook.com has cited Jackman's appearance on The Dr. Oz Show where he made this clear statement when asked about whether the THE WOLVERINE sequel will be his last film as Logan.

“This will be my last one. It is my last time. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”

From the way that sounds, THE WOLVERINE sequel may feature the death of Logan, a significant story arc in Marvel Comics. There was talk of including a re-cast Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and we have yet to hear confirmation of Jackman's involvement in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. That means we may only see him wield his adamantium one more time on the big screen after all.

The sequel to THE WOLVERINE is slated for release on March 3, 2017.

Red just because I want Hugh Jackman to stay in the role forever

But kudos to him on an epic run. My only hope is that he pops up in Apocalypse too, even if only a cameo, because then he'd have officially been in EVERY X-Men movie during his run as Logan (and he'd be the only actor to have been in all the films). It'd be a shame if after 17 years we couldn't say that just because of one movie. Also, I assume Wolverine 3 takes place in modern day after DOFP. If that's the case, then truth be told, this is a pretty decent way to go out. Fix The Last Stand (by

Pretty satisfactory if you ask me.

It was coming....

As a die hard fan I thought he did a phenomenal job as Wolverine. Just like how different writers put their own flare on old comic story lines, I liked the portrayal Jackman did for Logan. Yes, we didn't get to see the traditional Berserker mode or a perfect depiction of his origin. But you can't blame the guy for putting everything into the character.

Saying that, I really hope they don't kill off this version of Wolverine. I mean why, we didn't get a complete story line of every enemy

Saying that, I really hope they don't kill off this version of Wolverine. I mean why, we didn't get a complete story line of every enemy that wants to see him dead, or a proper look into his military career. They could easily bring Hugh back like so many actors to approach the character 20 years from now. Who knows, maybe at that point Fox and Marvel can play nice. Put the Hulk and Hawkeye in a Old Man Logan story line to give fans something to love like how so many of us had that feeling to see the new Star Wars trailer.

Maybe Jackman could replace RDJ as Tony Stark... or would that just be horribly confusing for all concerned?

The man after dedicating 17 years to a marvel role should somehow get to play Wolverine for his last time in the final Avengers movie. Some way, Some how.

this is sad news! Jackman is Wolverine! I'm sure there are other equally great actors that could play him, but he is Wolverine!

Damn that sucks. I wanted an Old Man Logan to be his last. I'd choose him not doing a 3rd and waiting years to do an O.M.L. over this any day.

He will be back, just like Eastwood in Unforgiven, give it 10 to 20 years and he will be back again.

Make this R rated and give us some good Wolverine violence! If its the last one, go out with a bang. It sucks he's retiring but I can almost guarantee in 10 years or so, we get an old man Logan movie.

Jackman IS Wolverine and as a big fan of both Wolverine and Jackman, I would like to say a very big thank you to Mr. Jackman in breathing life into this character and giving it everything he had.

I just hope his last film has him go out with a bang. He deserves it.

He shouldn't retire, I actually believe that Days Of Future Past is his best portrayal of Wolverine to date!

Just like RDJ IS Iron Man, Jackman IS the Wolverine, and I doubt anyone could play him more perfectly. I hope he makes an appearance in Apocalypse.

Wolvie needs the Dare Devil treatment and go small and with less flashy mutants like a cross between First Blood and Predator. Also buckets of blood.

If it has to be the last....

Make it count. It doesn't have to be the death of Wolverine, just the one final great story that overshadows them all. And I am thinking that it has to bring back Sabretooth, at least.

It's strange - to me, Jackman is Wolverine - he's played the role as good as say RDJ has played Stark. He's had countless good moments throughout all the movies he's been in...even the cameo ...in Night at the Museum 3 :o) First Class one wasn't bad either ;o) Still, I feel like we haven't had one knock it out of the park movie from him. Anywayz, definitely going to be a hard act to follow.

Go out with a bang

If there's any regret here it's that despite Jackman's best efforts and the talent behind the lens, they've somehow failed to deliver a truly kick-ass and fully immersive Wolverine movie which the character (and Jackman) truly deserves. I mean the kind of superhero movie that almost transcends the genre like "Winter Soldier" and "Days of Future Past" managed most recently. I'll always wonder if Darren Aronofsky's version of "The Wolverine" could have been it but who knows?

Very few actors

Very few actors have so passionately embraced this kind of role given the amount of work and dedication needed to bring it to screen, especially with such an expansive and lucrative body of work outside of his most popular character. And if you consider that the first X-men movie, which marked the resurgence of big budget comic movies, dropped 15 years ago and saw Jackman don the claws and scowl for the first time we can only wish that his last outing as Wolverine will be the send-off he deserves.

No matter what, it's been a phenomenal run and Hugh Jackman has absolutely defined the character for a generation.

It's a shame because he's done a great job playing the character. If they're doing Death of Wolverine, then it's certainly a good way to go out. Frankly I think they should do a variation on Old Man Logan (minus the rest of the Marvel characters). That way they can show a different future and perhaps somehow send him off on a happy note without having to compromise anything in the X-Men proper franchise.

The only good thing to come of this, is in future X-Men films we won't have stories

Yeah. He's mad the character a movie icon BUT all too often the X-Men movies kept coming too close to being the Wolverine show and in my humble opinion that is not the way it should be. He was great but there are pluses to him moving on now.

It had to come sooner or later, but it still sucks

Hugh Jackman delivered with Wolverine in a way that very few actors could have pulled off, and whoever takes the adamantium claws with have extremely large shoes to fill.

But yeah, I'm not surprised. Getting in shape like that takes a hell of a toll especially once you pass 40.
