Hugh Jackman is really, really pumped about Wolverine

02.01.2011

Out of all the upcoming superhero projects on the horizon, CAPTAIN AMERICA, GREEN LANTERN, THOR, FIRST CLASS, SUPERMAN and even THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, I have to say I think I'm the most excited for Darren Aronofsky's THE WOLVERINE, as not since Nolan took on Batman have we had such talent behind a superhero project. The fact that it's about my favorite character is an added bonus.

Someone else incredibly excited about it is the star of the show, Hugh Jackman, who recently spoke with the LA Times, detailing just what's going into the film.

I’m really, really pumped about it. I feel like all the planets are finally aligned to make a great movie. We finally have the character and with this mythology — ever since [the 2000 Bryan Singer film] X-Men, when I was kind of hanging around and reading all these comics, because I was cast before I ever read any X-Men comics, so I was trying to get my hands on everything. I remember saying to [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner, ‘Lauren, I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this Japanese story, and I think it’s so good. It’s just genius, it’s brilliant.’ And we kind of always talked about it from there on.

I sort of even wanted to do that in the third X-Men movie at first, but we thought, no, we really need to establish who he is at first, and we did that [with X-Men Origins: Wolverine], and now this is sort of the cherry on top, to finally do it and haveDarren Aronofsky direct it. I love his gung-ho attitude toward it and great vision. Straight off, it’s not a sequel, it’s a stand-alone, and I think we’re going to make one that people will describe as the best of the bunch.

As for the physical preparation? If you though Jackman was huge in ORIGINS, wait until you see him for THE WOLVERINE, where he's started a 6,000 calorie diet in preparation and has already bulked up 20lbs since the last installment.

I don’t know how much I want to give away about it, but Darren said with the last one, ‘Hey you looked great, but you’re so tall that in those long shots you looked kind of like Clint Eastwood, and that’s not Wolverine.’ He said that Wolverine, in the comics, is powerful, stocky, you know, he’s short and thick. So he said, ‘I want you to go there, get bigger.’ He’s going to come down after he gets done with all the black-tie events over and done with.

Yeah, he’s thick and it’s chunky and it’s powerful. I always think of Mike Tyson when he first came on the scene. Sometimes, he was a full foot shorter than his opponents and bent over [with this] massive build. There’s real power. You said bulldog, and that’s it exactly. Exactly. That’s what I’m going for, and if I have a massive heart attack first, well, you tell everyone what I was going for.

So, you excited yet?

Extra Tidbit: Make this thing rated R, and you'll win over every lingering doubter out there.

I have skipped over every Aronofsky film so far....but it sounds like the guy "gets it" when it comes to wolverine. Jackmans levis were pulled up to his tits in the last film (which wasnt the only reason it was bad). Wolverine has always been a hunched over smoothskined beast who borderlines on being a caveman and if theyre going to give us that wolverine im down

Darren Aronofsky

Hellllooo.... Do you guys live under a rock? Darren Aronofsky just made a movie about ballet that every guy I know wants to go see. This guy is the mad scientist of movie making. There is no doubt in my mind what-so-ever that he can make the best possible Wolverine movie ever. We are lucky to have him and Hugh's excited because he knows it.

I wanna be pumped too, but I remember Hugh reacting this way to the first Wolverine movie too. He has to of course as he has to advertise his movie, but I still remember....

Right on with the R rating. I think it's possible they could pull off PG-13, but this flick needs to get bloody as hell. Nothing better than seeing Wolvie get hardcore jacked up and keep going berserk.

Totally agree. There are loads of other cool characters and stories in the x-men universe, why keep doing stuff about Wolvie? Im not saying this wont be a good film, but I would have liked to see someone else - what happened to the Magneto movie?!

Definitely one of my most anticipated films. I love both Aronofsky and Jackman so I really think this will be phenomenal.

I'm very happy that this is a standalone film. I wish more superhero movies were like that. Think about it, the Indiana Jones movies are entirely standalone. We don't need the back story every single time. When you have a great character, we just want to see them go on an adventure, we don't need you to tie things together and continue where the last one left off. Plus we

When you have a great character, we just want to see them go on an adventure, we don't need you to tie things together and continue where the last one left off. Plus we won't have to limit every series to a trilogy. They can go on endless amounts of adventures. I believe this is what they'll do with Pirates of The Caribbean and I hope they do it with more superhero movies.

I wish they were doing this with Superman. No back story, just Superman vs Darkseid or Braniac or whatever. Then the next movie, no need to mention the previous movie, just add a new villain and we're good to go. We'd have nothing but pure action and we'd get to know the characters and get our character development through their actions, rather than spending the first hour telling us.

As for the rating, Aronofsky has never made a movie that wasn't R and if this isn't, you can bet your ass it will be a seriously hard PG-13. Either way, he's not going to be holding back too much.

Stand alones are great but alot of stories. Need continuity. Like if Luke Skywalker showed up in Return of the Jedi with his original hand. Or something more recent, Nolan leaving off DK with Batman on the run from the cops, I'd be pretty pissed off if Rises just left that whole storyline out

I'm all in because it's a stand alone movie and because I trust Aronofsky. I really hope the studio won't force a thousand mutant cameos in there. All we need is what is already in the books and I know Aronofsky will be smart about that!

As much as I hope for an R rated movie I know it's not gonna happen. Even if/when Marvel gets the rights back for Wolverine we will never see an R rated movie. Too much money to be lost that way for the studio. Sad, but it's the way the business is and

Although 'Origin' was sucky, I'm looking forward to this one. I think Hugh Jackman does a great job at bringing our favorite Marvel character to life, hopefully this story/movie will impress more then the last few movies...(X3, Origin)

Thank you, Jackman!

I've said this a million times before but comic book fans are lucky to have Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Anyone (no seriously, ANYONE) else would have packed his bags by the end of X-Men : The Last Stand and we'd have Chris Evans as Wolverine now...you know, since he can multitask. Hugh Jackman is passionate about his role, you can see he genuinely loves the character, and because of that we at least have some form of continuity...not one Wolverine in Singer's flicks then Mark Ruffaloo steps in

Good news indeed.

Sounds good to me. I didnt hate Origins...but it could've been sooo much better. We all know what a shitbag X-3 was...here's to hoping that First Class and Wolverine kick it up a notch. I'm thinking with Aronofsky and a razor sharp production we may have some much needed pride (or Pryde...silly, i know lol)restored to this franchise!

Okay, look, X3 wasn't shit. Ratner basically took a dump on X-Men comics continuity but in and of itself it wasn't a bad movie. People complained about X1 but X2 turned out fine. I think if Singer had had the opportunity to do another Superman movie that would have been fine too. But I don't think anything they could have done with X3 would have been as good as the Claremont-Byrne comics. The same thing happened with Origins: it wasn't as good as the Barry Windsor Smith Weapon X comics.

So you really need to check your expectations at the door. People say Spiderman 3 was bad because they had high expectations after Spiderman 2 and I guarantee some people are going to walk out of The Dark Knight Rises because they'll be expecting something brilliant but instead it'll just be good. Oh, the sin of only being good! It can kill a director's career!

Fuck singer...

what has he done that's any good beside 'the usual suspects'? He fucked up the x-men movies, fucked up superman, thank god he passed on this. Fuck fox for accepting shit scripts and trying to attract money by hiring these pretentious hacks. I'm praying that Aronofsky acquaints himself with the source material. Maybe the '82 Claremont/Miller limited series, or something involving the hand and jubelee and the lady mandarin. Him was scouring the globe looking for the x-men was epic.

You obviously do not read comics. What about X-2 was like the comics? The first 5 minutes where nightcraler actually was night crawler, then he durned into a stuttering jackass. Storm so mis-cast it's a shame, and even if you wanted Berry's 'star power' singer could not get a good performance out of her, which is just a reflection of his ineptitude. The vast age difference between Famke and Marsden was unbelievable. everything about the flick was off. Examples of good comic adaptations would be

FUCK RATED R

a movie being rated R is overrated. No pun intended, but it's true.

A movie doesn't need to be rated R to be dark, gritty or brutal. There are so many recent examples of PG-13 movies that you would have no idea are actually PG13 until you saw the rating itself.

The Wolverine will be amazing, I'm so excited for it... the only thing I don't dig is the title... the 'the' doesn't seem right. Why can't they just call it 'Wolverine' or something, seeing as the last one was 'X-Men Origins:

I definitely agree with you on the rating. A Wolverine movie doesn't need to be rated R, its not like Spawn or Ghost Rider that deals with dark violent characters. He's just a guy with claws that slices the occasional baddie up. A hard pg13 is just fine with me (perhaps with a unrated Dvd). The Dark Knight was pretty damn dark with its kills and with Two Face's crispy mug so I suspect Wolverine will be closer to that.

@Kingwee - How can someone know a movie is "trash" if they didn't go see it?

I'm with Bhak and minderthr33 - War Zone was an awesome Punisher movie.

Thomas jane SUCKED ASS as Punisher, they placed it in Tampa (REALLY?!?) and changed the entire fucking origin.

War zone was over the top with tongue placed firmly in cheek, just like the comics are.

No one saw it because they changed the entire cast and tone from what the original was, and they tried to pass it off as a "sequel" when in fact

The whole thing about Jackman getting thick and stocky doesn't make any sense. The guy is like 6'3, and he's going to be in JAPAN, where the average height is like 5'6 back then. Unless they use cgi to make him look more hunched and smaller (which would look horrible), they miscast Jackman for Wolverine, needed to be someone shorter and stockier...DUH

If you're judging strictly by the physicality described above by Aronofsky via Jackman, then yes, they should have cast someone closer to that build, way back in 'X-Men'.

But that fact is irrelevant as Jackman has cemented the role over 10 years in four movies, is internationally associated with the character, and is the main reason Aronofsky is even involved in the first place.

Never in a million years would this be rated R, though you might get an "unrated" dvd version. I'm really interested to see how it will be visually with Matthew Libatique's cinematography, since Aronofsky's used him for everything, except The Wrestler, but Libatique also shot both Iron Man's and Cowboys and Aliens.

Have to totally agree with Paul Tassi on this one. I'm extremely excited and can't wait to see how they deliver. 2011 looks great in terms of comic films but 2012 will be the pinnacle!

Hope they can swing an "R" rating because that's what Wolverine needs at this point. I guarantee a "R" rated Wolverine draws better box office then Origins (as long as they don't leek this one early as well)

No, not at all. I like HJ, and DA. But the first movie was so atrocious that I am taking a wait and see approach to this one. Won't be seeing it in theaters. Netflix probably more likely.

I want to believe this movie will rule, but as talented as Aronovsky is I'm not sure he's good for for this kind of [link] his skill for deep characterization should compensate though !
The ONE thing I have faith in, is FOX's ability to fuck this up before it's released ! Ho, and, (tidbit) yeah, sure, like it will happen in our lifetime !!!!

The fact that they're so determined just to get the look of Wolverine right says to me that they really want to make amends for Origins.

I'm willing to be optimistic about this one even though the last time I had blind faith in any movie was Phantom Menace.

hmmmm

With the kind bulk he's talking about he could probably go right from Wolverine into Strong Guy in an X-Force movie, lol.

Jackman is great and all but they really should have gotten someone shorter for Wolverine.

Well... they don't have to try too hard

to surpass the last two "X-men" movies. And maybe even this next one from the looks of it.

Really excited for this film. Wolverine is one of my favorite superheros and comic book charcaters and can't wait to see him finally kick ass again on the big screen.

Since they both worked together on The Foutain, I have the most faith that this movie will be amazing.
