Hugh Jackman talks Wolverine rewrites and status

Sep. 26, 2011by: Dave Davis

We'll still see Marvel's sinewy shredded on the big screen, but THE WOLVERINE will just slash through Japan a little later than anticipated.

Hugh Jackman is out promoting REAL STEEL, a movie with alloys far more blunt than the razor-fisted mutant, and talked with The Playlist about the ongoing delays: "Now that [director James Mangold's] on board, we’re ready to go. For [LES MISERABLES] to work, we would have had to start WOLVERINE, basically, yesterday. So when we needed to press the button, we weren’t quite ready. So it will happen straight after."

Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) penned the script, although previously attached director Darren Aronofsky did some tinkering, and now the screenplay is getting another rewrite by Mark Bomback (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, CONSTANTINE, JACK THE GIANT KILLER).

But Jackman remains confident in the script: "When a director takes over any script they need to make it their movie. So Jim hired Mark to help him make the movie his own. Darren had worked on the script himself and taken it in a certain direction that was right for him. And that would have been a great version of the movie. I’ve seen Jim’s version now and, you know, Jim saw things that weren’t working for him that were working for Darren. And I’ve got to hand it to Fox and to Jim, it’s easy when you start with the best script we’ve had from Chris McQuarrie. Which is why Darren signed on. So once you have that, that’s 80, 85 percent of your movie."

As we've heard, the movie will be set in Japan and finds Logan meeting his true love and facing a ninja clan. But the story won't just draw from Frank Miller's initial miniseries -- it also seems to be sampling from the Uncanny X-Men comic arc (which featured villains Silver Samurai and Viper, both expected in the movie). "It’s a little darker and, I think, a little more true to the character. If you read all of [the Japanese saga] there is a lot of it that is a little disparate and some of it’s got X-Men in it. There’s a wedding and all that. So we take license with that."

I'm hoping, no I'm praying for this movie to be great. Hugh Jackman has been so passionate about Wolverine and keeps coming back to play the character even after the lackluster X-Men 3 and the clusterf**k that was X-Men Origins. Anyone else would have flipped the finger at the studio and walked away. Jackman gives us some form of continuity at least, so I really, really hope this movie is the Wolverine movie we've been waiting for. We deserve it for putting up with Fox's bullshit, and Jackman

I really want them to take their time, and get this one right. I have faith in Mangold to deliver a good movie, and I think Hugh is more commited to this one after the fan reaction to the last one. Last thing I think they want is another Origins on their hands.

Adding Silver Samurai and Viper from the X-Men run adding to the Miller stuff is simply perfect. Taking time to really do it right is another great idea. They have everything in place and I guarantee this film will be shockingly good. Wait and see.

sounds good

the reason this was ever so great wasn't because Aronofsky was behind the camera, but because of the script/screenplay and the rave reviews it was getting across the board, especially from a highly regarded director like Aronofsky. The most important thing that Jackman mentions here is that THAT SCRIPT IS STILL there, and it really isn't being changed. The only things that are being changed up are a few things that better suit Mangold's style as opposed to another director's. I'm glad he's

I'm glad he's making it his own a bit, with that he'll bring some added passion to the project which will be great.

+1 on what Nite Owl said, I trust in Mangold and Jackman, they know what the fans want and they know what they want. They'll pull through.

Jackman loves the property, and rightfully so, he's making lots of money...but, i think he genuinely likes it for more than the bottom dollar, bc at this point he doesn't "need" to say yes to anything Wolverine- which i a good thing, and i trust him this time around...when he hyped the shit outta X-Men 3 and Wolverine Origins, i really feel he believed they were going to be good, i don't think he was just pulling our strings- i think he fell under the spell of marketing without even "watching"

I mean no offense to anyone involved, but all I just read was how GREAT the Aronofsky film would have been. For me, this film will now unfortunately be the film that never was.

oh no

Live free or die [link] oh, this script is in trouble.

I love Jackman, I do, he's awesome, but he promoted the shit outta Wolverine saying how great it is, so I'm not going to get excited yet.

Hum...

While I can believe this is how it will go down, and I'm ambivalent about the new film after Aronofsky's departure, I think it'll be Jackman's last film as Wolverine anyway. He's passionate about the character, and I agree with polarboy in saying that Jackman deserves a good one, but that would be all the more reason to bow out thereafter.

Can't say that Live Free was very good but I enjoyed Constantine. Clearly. Plus he is just doing small rewrites from what is supposed to be a great script.

Might as well throw the script out since Mark Bombeck is rewriting it. It isn't looking good.

A wedding?

This just went from bad to worse. Can we travel back in time when Aronofsky was still attached?

well I believe the comic has a feud between the silver samurai, and wolverine over a girl. It makes sense to have a wedding. Wolverine probably ends up marrying this girl and then she gets killed.

SPOILER BELOW
In the comics, Wolvie fall in love for Mariko, who's Silver Samurai's cousin if I remember it right (and Sunfire's sister). They're supposed to marry but she's manipulated and cancel the wedding a few minutes prior to it. Later on, she's poisoned and ask for Wolvie to kill her and avoid suffering and dishonor... He does ! Correct me if I'm wrong !

"Straight after" huh?

Not buying it Hugh. Unless you're doin' Les Mis all juiced/jacked up on your 10k calories of chicken per day workout routine I don't see that happening. That, or this is gonna be the puniest Wolvie we have seen...

"Jim saw things that werent working for him that were working for Darren."

I am pretty sure Darren Afronosky knew what he was doing based off his past movies.

There is just too much of a good storyline for this NOT to be bad. I liked Wolverine Origins but it could have been better. I am hoping this movie turns out to be great, because it's kind of hard NOT to give one of the best comic book characters of all time a great movie.

What a wrong way to interpret things. Mangold didnt say things didn't work or that Aronofsky didn't know what he was doing. He is just readjusting it to HIS vision. He's not out to make the film Aronofsky would have made, but his own. And wow, the way you spelled "Afronosky" is just amazing.

Since you liked Wolverine, and every other shitty comic book movie made, your opinion doesn't hold up.
