Hugh Jackman wishes he could discuss the cool ideas for the next Wolverine installment

Nov. 15, 2013by: Niki Stephens

I had this weird dream last night that I was in on meetings for potential comic book films and one of them was the next WOLVERINE flick. Yeah, it was weird. They wanted to go with a title like "Wolverine: The Purge" or something. I think I saw a TV spot for THE PURGE before bed so that's why it popped in my head. Maybe this is part of my secret desire to make comic book films better.

Then I wake up to find out that Hugh Jackman has actually been talking with THE WOLVERINE director James Mangold about the follow up to this years solo Wolvie film. Weird, right?

Jackman didn't give up any detail but he did say there was some good stuff on the horizon:

I was on the phone with Jim Mangold last night, says Jackman. There are some really cool ideas that Im dying to tell you, but that would be giving away a secret that is not even [fully] formed yet. I do want to do it with Jim and with [producer] Lauren Shuler-Donner because we had such a great experience. Im really proud of The Wolverine.

We've been wondering if Jackman would continue to do Wolverine films. I think it would be kind of neat if he aged with the character then we got Old Man Logan. The actor is up for doing another film as long as everything is in its right place:

I dont want to dive into another one until we have a compelling reason to do another one. I love the character, hes kind of like a best friend to me, and I dont ever want to take [him] or the fans for granted. I think weve got a great opportunity to make something really cool, but it has to be great. Thats what were all working toward.

What do you want to see in the next WOLVERINE installment?

He loves the character?

Which Wolverine are you reading about Hugh, because you haven't played the character properly once. You don't know the character.

Yes, more please. I thought The Wolverine was great. If they can do that again, I'll buy a ticket.

I would like Wolverine and Yukio to continue their friendship. Plus see a villain that isn't just a giant suit, rather someone who will give Logan more than one match. It would be nice to set him up in a Bruce Lee fashion and put him against a bunch of people at the same time like in Fist of Fury. The Wolverine almost had it, but it turned out different.

I predict...

Wolverine and Yukio will go to Hong Kong and Yukio will be killed by local gangsters.
It is a simple formula:
Bad gangsters + Logan's best friend getting killed = a lot of dead triad members

Bonus: The triad boss shoots laser beams out of his hands. He is NOT at any time called The Mandarin.

Hulk...

Man how I wish they could some how get the rights to throw Hulk in there, paying homage to his first appearance. Omega Red would be my second hope (though Whiplash kinda already stole that imagery, so I dunno now). Or even him as Patch for a stint, there is alot of untouched ground from his earlier appearances that are ripe for choosing (just please stay the fuck away from the new MCU). I almost kind of wish they somehow did the Fatal Attractions arc (rather then pick snippets), when Magneto

Man, even a reference would be cool at the end or something. "Logan, a Canadian strike team needs your assistance with some irradiated behemoth, we're sending you there." If they can share Quicksilver...(naw, that's too much to hope for)

The Wolverine was fantastic, I can't wait to see what Mangold and Jackman do for the sequel.

Sounds fantastic, just don't give us a BS ending with an unbreakable metal getting broke (English be damned!)

The Wolverine was awesome and the character's Cage Match introduction scene in the first X-MEN movie is still one of my favorite scenes in any comic book movie. Jackman doesn't always nail the intensity and ferociousness of Logan / Wolverine, but he came pretty damn close the last time and I admire that. His passion for the character is amazing and it'd be a dream come true if 20 years from now we're eagerly anticipating Old Man Logan with Jackman still attached.

remember, remember...

Funny how a year ago everyone was like 'without Aronovsky I'm NOT Youngstown see this (surely to be) crappy movie'...
And look at us, now, hopping for the return of Mangold after his (above average) work on the last one...
Just a thought...

I love Jackman's enthusiasm and portrayal for and of the Wolverine character....I really do. However, he always bigs up the next Wolverine project. Nothing wrong with that...but it kinda sucks that both solo efforts have lacked something that stopped me from completely enjoying them the way I wanted to. Needless to say both have had some truly awesome moments (whether it was the amazing intro of Origins or the WW2 scene in the latest effort) - just hate coming out feeling like something was

Always down for more Wolverine

I really love all the X-Men films (yes, even Origins) and Wolverine is such an awesome character. I love how the article makes it sound like we're even close to getting an Old Man Logan type of film. Jackman has barely aged since X-Men 1 and he's in otherworldly shape.

As vague as that sounds, it seems like were going to get another stand alone Wolverine film, which is exactly what this character needs. If Mangold doesn't do something completely different, he could follow the events of Days of Future Past.

By thanking Wolverine for saving the past and present, Xavier unlocks all the unanswered questions by extensively reading his mind. You could show so many of the amazing comic mini series Wolverine has gotten over the decades and end the movie by giving

Just saw the alternate ending to the Wolverine. Mild SPOILERS:

The scene plays out almost exactly as it does in the theatrical cut, with Logan in the Yashida private jet waiting to take off when Yukio joins him in the plane. Except in the alternate ending, she is holding a large box which she presents to Logan. He opens to the box, and it is HIS COSTUME, with the helmet and everything. It's the same costume which was featured in an article here; the photo having to be removed after Fox

Man, I so wish they'd left that in.

Yeah. That would have made for a nice ending. Even if it he didn't put it on, it would have been nice to at lease seen the suit in the box.

I thougt the Wolverine was one of the better comic book films that I have seen lately and I would be totally down for another collaboration between Jackman and Mangold. The Wolverine had some of the best scenes throughout the entire X-Men franchise, so I would love to see where and what else they could accomplish with Wolverine.
