Strike Back below!
by: George Merchan Mar. 12, 2010

Though much of the speculation of late has centered around who will (or who won't) play Captain America himself, news has now nonchalantly emerged that Hugo Weaving (THE WOLFMAN, V FOR VENDETTA, THE MATRIX) is close to securing the part of Cap's arch-nemesis Red Skull! A good number of our readership was veering towards some Christoph Waltz in a recent "Cast This" column, though Weaving I feel is a very fine choice (and one that makes sense, since Weaving just worked with director Joe Johnston on THE WOLFMAN).

THR's Heat Vision explains some of the details regarding the casting: "The dealmaking with Weaving is in a delicate stage that will play out in the next day or so. Agencies grouse that Marvel plays hardball in the negotiating process and also demands multi-movie commitments, though the latter usually applies to actors playing its heroes."

Multi-movie commitment? Only if Weaving doesn't bite the red, white, and blue dust, which... who knows?! Anything could happen. I was just last week on the set of THOR (a preview of which I'll hopefully get to bring you guys soon), and the fact is, Marvel is being extremely tight-lipped about everything right now (especially CAPTAIN AMERICA).

But this is a great big (red) bone we've been tossed. What do guys think of this? Strike Back below and let us know!

Extra Tidbit: When you guys are all done here, be sure to watch Albert Pyun's 1990 CAPTAIN AMERICA online. I recommend hard alcohol and/or a blunt to enhance your viewing experience (as if that were possible).

YES YES YES
Yes, a thousand fuckin' times yes!

As a non-American, the character itself has never spoken to me really, but they have to get the casting right of Cap in order to give us a decent Avengers movie. This potential casting shows Marvel is trying its damn hardest. Some of the casting of the Iron Man movies, Hulk and Thor has been inspired and they've cast some great talent.

Cap has to probably be the toughest one to pick. I don't envy the person, as someone is going to object heavily, whoever it is.

Awesome choice. I really hope Marvel can keep itself with it long enough to pan out this Avengers crossover.

great casting...and I agree, they should make an already established white character black...just as soon as they remake The Jeffersons with an all white cast!

A Black Capt America
I think Champion7 is on to something and it would be an interesting approach. But its tough to buck Marvel. When I made Captain America back in 1990 we tried to get some changes past because I was having trouble with making the costume work so it was believable looking. Think I tried to go with the Capt America black costume which I always petitioned for with Spider-Man in 1988 (the black...

Think I tried to go with the Capt America black costume which I always petitioned for with Spider-Man in 1988 (the black spidey costume). Yeah, it would've changed the storylines but in tests the black costumes looked way better on film. Anyway, I wish the new Cap the best of luck because its not easy to pull off that character.

That is fantastic casting! He is an immense actor with huge presence. Without him the Matrix films would've had far less impact IMO. He was cool in LOTR and in V so I'm amped to have him as The Red Skull!

Time for a Black Superhero
I dissagree with this choice for Captain America. There is no time like the present to have a Black Super Hero. Black President, Black Super Hero. There are none that I know of. Now is just a good a time as ever and my choice would be Xzibit. Its time he played a cool role.

I think Weaving will do great, but it seems like every villian role is going to him or Mark Strong. I'd rather Hollywood take a chance on someone less predictable for a villian, like Nolan did with Ledger.

I can see this. You call it predictable, I call it perfectly acceptable. We know the man can emote through a computer virus AND a character that wears a mask, so why wouldn't he be competent as The Red Skull?

I think it makes sense and will probably be a good choice. It' sjust not real exciting. Uninspired choice. But it will be a lot about the voice, and he has that, so it should be fine.

For those wondering about Red Skull's appearance...The original Red Skull just wears a mask that Hitler gave him. Most Captain America stories say he wore the mask because he was either badly scarred or he did not want to have his father's face. In one story variation, he goes as far as to actually cut off his own face to resemble his mask. In other words, he's nothing like Skeletor or Ghost...

Christoph Waltz wouldn't have accepted this role after playing Landa.

He just played one of the best Nazi villains in recent film, it might be a bad career move to take on such a similar role.

I think Agent Smith will do fine, but I also liked the Mads Mikkelsen suggestion.
