Hugo Weaving on the future of Red Skull and whether he will play him or not

Oct. 15, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Upon seeing CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, I was confident that Red Skull would become a main villain in the future of the Marvel cinematic universe. I was very surprised when Loki became the focal point in THE AVENGERS and not Red Skull. But, the fact that the fate of the villain is left decidedly open means that we may see him battling our favorite heroes some time in the future. But, will Hugo Weaving portray the HYDRA honcho?

Cinema Blend reports that while Weaving is contractually obligated to Marvel, he is not sure about where he will pop up again. Weaving had this to say about his contract: “I think anyone who signs up for Marvel probably would be obliged to sign a certain deal for three or four pictures or whatever, or more, actually, in some of those cases. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to come to fruition.”

While it seems that CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is decidedly set on a new bad guy (plus the fact that Weaving has been in HOBBIT and CLOUD ATLAS mode for the last few years), where would Red Skull show up again? THE AVENGERS 2. He is a big enough bad guy that he could do battle with the team as a whole, especially if he somehow teams up with Thanos or gets his hands back on the Cosmic Cube. I would be partial to having Red Skull be the more human villain to balance out the sheer alien nature of Thanos. The two would definitely be more than enough to lay the groundwork for Phase Three.

Weaving does not sound very confident that he will reprise the Red Skull role but he also has been a part of some major movie franchises in the last few decades. Red Skull could easily be played by another actor which could be explained away in any number of ways. But, I liked Weaving's portrayal and would be stoked if he decided to return, provided the story worked out.

Would you like to see Red Skull return in THE AVENGERS 2?

Extra Tidbit: Weaving on why he took the Red Skull role: "This guy thinks Hitlerís a pussy [laughs]. Heís a villain. So thatís why I did it, I was like ĎLetís try this.í To play a role like that, thatís fun."

I think it is more a question of "when they will use the Red Skull again if ever" than "will Weaving get asked back at all."

I'm not sure if this was from the same interview, but if it was, i have to wonder why this wasn't part of this article. Via movies.com:
"I think the tendency with those films would be to probably not bring a villain back. They might for The Avengers, but I didnít think Iíd be in Captain America 2 or 3. I think Iíve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, itís not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by."
That kind of tells a different side to this story, doesn't it?

Marvel will use Red Skull again, it's only a matter of when. I still have a feeling he'll show up at the very end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Plus, with Thanos and the Nine Realms being introduced, I'm sure he'll show up in some capacity, perhaps being a pawn of Thanos. Weaving is required to come, he's just being blindly optimistic that Marvel wouldn't 'force' him to return which in anyones right mind, they would. If he decides to break his contract, I think Kevin Bacon or Michael

I'd be very disappointed if we never get to see Red Skull agian, I'd prefer him over Loki any day.

As I have predicted 3 times before - Red Skull will be back to fight side by side with Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy and will be defeated, probably for good while Thanos gets away with the Infinity Guantlet. This makes the most sense to me. He is not a big enough villain to show up in the second phase of the Avengers picture.

Weaving was actually quite good as the Red Skull. It'd be nice to have him back for the role.

yes but not for Avengers 2

i could see him popping up at the end of captain America 2.. setting up the franchise for him to battle Cap in part 3 but till then.. no... he's always been a Captain America villain and i dont think he's ever squared off against The Avengers team... and certainly not the Hulk and Iron Man, he'd seem out of place in an Avengers movie... but captain America 3 YES YES and YES!!!!!

I know I'll get the usual thumbs down, but Captain America is the character they've messed up the most with these films, in relation to how things went down in the comics. It's way too early in Cap's story to be doing the Winter Soldier story, which they screwed up with events in the first film anyway, and even moreso if, as this article suggests, Red Skull isn't involved at all in the next Cap movie. I'm sure they can still make a decent film out of it, but it's going to be so different to the

I'm sure they can still make a decent film out of it, but it's going to be so different to the meaning, motivation and relevance of the original comic story that using that story's name just doesn't seem right to me.
Personally I thought Weaving was great in the role, and hope he returns to it at some point.

what's the news here?? two lines of him saying "i don't know", and the rest of this article is the writer's fanboy speculation.
from another interview with him....
"it's not something i would want to do again."

maybe report about that?
