Hunnam's Vlad

12.07.2009

Which do you want first, the good news or the bad news?

The good news is that two of the coolest cats in Hollywood, Brad Pitt and Charlie Hunnam are teaming up for a project. Pitt is producing a script by Hunnam (he writes?), that chronicles a legendary and mysterious figure in history.

The bad news? It’s about more f*cking vampires.

VLAD is the re-worked origin story of Dracula, known to history as Vlad the Impaler, and the Hunnam script paints him as a young prince who roams around Europe bedding hot chicks and then sucking them dry. I think it’s safe to assume Hunnam is thinking of himself for the title role.

The film is going to be directed by music video helmer Anthony Mandler, who has done videos for Rihanna, The Killers and Eminem, and his video reel for the project allegedly wowed execs into forking over cash as they thought it had echoes of 300 in it.

Vampire-ness aside, I’m all aboard for anything Charlie Hunnam is in, and if you truly are tossing in a bit of 300’s visceral style and name-drop Brad Pitt to boot, this could be something I could get behind.

Extra Tidbit: After all the "Undeclared" alums started blowing up, I always wondered why the hell Hunnam never caught on. That seems to be changing between this and "Sons of Anarchy."

He is awesome in S.O.A. so I'm down with anything he does.

Charlie is awesome

He is indeed the shiznit on Sons of Anarchy, one of the big reasons it is one of the best shows on tv right now. I was surpised that he wants to take on the Prince Vlad story instead of Count Dracula. Wish him the best of luck, it's a project he's pretty passionate about, and it's a f'ing hardcore genre project.

Methinks this will be closer to Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula (hopefully minus Canoe Reeves) than Twilight.

Vlad Tepes was more of an inspiration for Dracula than anything else. I think Bram Stoker heard the name and adapted it for his purposes. Actually, in the novel Dracula never gets a first name.

Hunnam was a badass in that HOOLIGANS movie with Elijah Wood. Didn't even know it was the same guy from Undeclared until afterward.

not vampires?

one other point...this isn't really a vampire movie. Vlad the Impaler was a real guy with a fucked up real story. He was not really a vampire (of course) but he was the inspiration for the Dracula character. Hunnam's script is about the real guy, not a Dracula origin story.

Interview

Hunnam did an interview with Carson Daly where he said that he would like to be in the movie if possible but the most important thing is that it gets made. He said the scope (and probably budget) is a bit much for him to be the title role at this point in his career. He said he sees someone like Christian Bale being Vlad and he would be some supporting character. Charlie Hunnam is FUCKING AWESOME in Sons of Anarchy and I think he is going to be a big star.
