I Want That: Pacific Rim action figures from Neca!

08.27.2013

As the summer movie season comes to a close most department stores will start slapping clearance tags on their movie-themed toy merchandise that didn't exactly fly off the shelves and avid collectors will attempt to scoop up the rare finds that will find a second life (or not) on ebay. It's been a relatively crappy summer for movie toys, however, with MAN OF STEEL and IRON MAN 3 (ironically, two fo the top earners) not putting much effort into their molded plastic and holdovers like GI JOE: RETALIATION not doing much better. Beyond the always reliable Lego's (who are probably kicking themselves with all THE LONE RANGER overstock they're likely to have), the best offering for movie-related action figures came in the form of one of the summer's underdogs: PACIFIC RIM.

Neca toys produced a line of 7-inch action figures, intricately detailed, articulated, and finely crafted, which serve as a perfect robots vs. monsters addition to fuel the imagination of anyone from age four to age forty. Currently available are Gypsy Danger, Crimson Typhoon, and Knifehead, with two more additions, Stryker Eureka and Leatherback, set for release next month. In addition, a special 18-inch light up Gypsy Danger is in the pipeline for release as well, completing what is without a doubt the best of this summer's action figure line-up for a movie tie-in. If you're a fan of the film or action figures in general, then these PACIFIC RIM figures from Neca are hard to beat (and likely hard to find in the coming months). Grab 'em while you can!

Here's the line-up:

You can find the PACIFIC RIM action figures in specialty stores, Amazon, and many other online toy retailers.

Those are cool, nothing I need for my collection but nevertheless still sweet.

I really think "I Want That" is my favorite article here.

These are awesome

I have series 1. They are awesome. Very detailed. I wouldn't recommend buying them off of Amazon. Think Geek had fair prices, but were sold out right after the movie was released. Amazon had HUGELY inflated prices due to the demand. I found a small little online store called Lindsey's Toy Room. They had all 3 in a bundle for a real good price. They are very fair on their prices, from what I cam tell. I went ahead & preordered series 2 from them also at a better price. They've already sold out

Series 2 comes with a battle-damages Gipsy, Striker & Leatherback. I read a tweet from NECA that said series 3 would include a Cherno Alpha figure.

I grabbed a hold of the Gipsy Danger figure, and I like it a lot. The shade of blue seems a bit light, but it does have some nice detail work going and NECA was apparently granted access to ILM's models to make the figures as accurate as possible.

NECA did a terrible job

Normally I'm a fan of NECA, but their quality recently has been terrible. The Pacific Rim line is by far the worst. The paint jobs on these figures are a mess and the plastics used are cheap looking. As a Pacific Rim fan, I'm holding out until someone else gets the license or NECA gets their shit together.

I think the quality of the movie was being reflected in their craftsmanship, you cant make the statue of David out of a pile of crap.
