Ian McKellen has one last mystery to solve in the trailer for Mr. Holmes

Now that a wide release for Bill Condon's MR. HOLMES has been announced, we also have a brand new trailer to go along with it. For those not in the know, Mr. Holmes stars Ian McKellen as the famed detective in what looks to be a more grounded take on the character. The story will follow an aging Sherlock Holmes in 1947 as he seeks to revisit the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement before his mind diminishes. You can get a taste of the sleuthing below.

Bill Condon looks like he has a nice, little character piece to deliver before he goes all BEAUTY AND THE BEAST on us. I find it a little odd that they chose to release this in the midst of the summer movie season instead of the fall, but there ya have it. Perhaps if they showed a version of the trailer where Sherlock Holmes busts out his Hulkbuster armor, the movie would stand a better chance.

MR. HOLMES will open in theaters on July 17, 2015.

I hope this is good enough to earn McKellen some awards recognition. It's baffling to me that Sir Ian only has two Oscar nominations to his name (for Gods And Monsters and LOTR1). He deserves to have the title Academy Award Winner.

Looks really good but....

This looks beautiful lay filmed with the old charm of Sherlock Holmes. But...who the hell decided that this should come out in the Summer. This is 100% a fall movie. I will see it either way. But I don't think it will draw much of a crowed for the summer. But then again look at Seabiscut. That came out early summer and made a good amount money with several academy award noms to follow. So we'll see how this goes as a summer release.

because the budget was probably low enough to justify it. And in a summer filled with teenage films, gargantuan blockbusters and foul mouthed comedies. Maybe the older crowd would like something that would appeal to them that would allow them to go out on a Saturday night and enjoy a good film. :)
