Ian McKellen to play Cogsworth in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast

04.10.2015

Bill Condon is assembling quite the cast for his live-action remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST; so far we've got Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline, and possibly Josh Gad. Now we have another name to add to that list as Variety has revealed that Ian McKellen has joined the film in the role of Cogsworth, the Beast's loyal butler who finds himself transformed into a clock. After years of playing mutants, wizards, and several fantastic roles out of Shakespeare, playing a sentient piece of furniture should be a snap.

They've hardly begun and yet I'm already growing tired of Disney's current trend of turning all their animated classics into live-action films; DUMBO, WINNIE THE POOH, THE JUNGLE BOOK, MULAN, and PINOCCHIO, it's all a bit much. There's no denying that they'll be successful but I just don't feel overly excited about any of them. You're a real Eeyore Kevin. One thing I am rather curious about is how they'll handle all these walking talking appliances in a live-action world; the character designs in the 1991 film are so memorable but I'm not sure how successfully they would cross over. I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

Production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is slated to get underway later this year for a March 17, 2017 release.

Which Disney live-action remake are you looking forward to most?

Extra Tidbit: I suspect the casting of Lumiere will follow shortly, wouldn't it be great it were Patrick Stewart?

I'd rather

Watch Sword in the Stone live action with McKellan as Merlin. But he is a great actor and this looks to be a stunning cast.

I'm not sold on McKellen as Cogsworth

He'll knock it out of the park, as he usually does, but it seems like such a small role for such an excellent actor. But this flick is developing one hell of a cast.

This does beg the question who would play Lumiere. I like Netforce's suggestion of Stewart, not because of their famous friendship. But because you need someone who can match McKellen. That's the one thing about this that has me scratching my head: is Ian McKellen too good for Cogsworth?

Oh My God, if you cast Sir Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, you've got to cast Sir Patrick Stewart as Lumiere!!

Awesome casting. I still think Anna Kendrick should have been cast as Belle.

Anna Kendrick wouldve made a great Belle, but we just have to make do with Emma Watson as Belle instead

I actually like most of these. Well, some of these. I liked Maleficent and Cinderella, anyway. Alice in Wonderland left much to be desired for me. But I've wanted a live action version of Disney's B&B pretty much since they did the Broadway musical.

Jean Dujardin would make a great Lumiere

Idk about McKellen as Cogsworth. He's one of the finest actors working today without a doubt, but idk if he is right for the kind of character Cogsworth is. it's an interesting choice thats not bad, just unusual.
