Idris Elba fights for his ideals in the full length trailer for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Jul. 19, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Last week I brought you the first teaser for MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM. Idris Elba is nothing short of spectacular but all we got was a voice over coupled with a beautiful aerial shot. We saw Idris as Mandela walking through the plain surrounded by his children.

The first theatrical trailer shows us why Idris Elba needs the recognition he deserves as an actor. The guy is spot on in the role. It's ridiculous how good he is. I'm also entertaining the fact that we just recently saw him in PACIFIC RIM. Here the true story is fleshed out, and you become more familiar with Nelson Mandela's journey to fight for freedom. Naomie Harris also looks great as Mandela's wife Winnie. The script is adapted from Mandela's autobiography that shares the same name as the film's title.

Synopsis: A chronicle of Nelson Mandela's life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris hits theaters November 9, 2013.

The shots look good (as does Idris), but this really is a formulaic and stale trailer. I'm South African - but this give me no goosebumps.

This looks like a caricature. In my opinion, this does not do justice to Mandela's lifework; it feels like a cheap romanticization. Also, even though I'm a fan of Elba, I don't think he's a good fit for the role.

Not Sure

Nelson Mandela is an inspiring figure, but many other films have already been made about him. He's been played by Danny Glover, Sidney Poitier, Dennis Haysbert, Morgan Freeman, David Harewood, and Terrence Howard. None of there movies were perfect or should be considered the definitive Mandela movie, but based on this trailer, I doubt this one will rise above them in any profound way. It just came off a yet another trying to be inspiring biopic that we've all seen a dozens times before. The

Maybe if they used music that sounded like it came from South Africa and not a Hollywood studio? Also, its not a new twist to examine his relationship with Winnie, two of the actors I listed above appeared in movies in which Winnie was the central character.
