Idris Elba was once in talks for the role of Luke Cage

11.20.2013by:

We've thrown around a dozen names for the role of Luke Cage. If Idris Elba was a contender, would you be down for that? Seems the actor at one point had conversations with Marvel about potentially taking on the role.

In an interview with Huffington Post, Elba spoke a little about his prior involvement and his awesome Halloween costume:

HuffPo: Is there a particular superhero that you want to play?

Idris Elba: No, there isn't one. For Halloween, I wore Superman. And I was like, "I don't mind this cape being behind me" [laughs].

HuffPo: You could bring the cape back in style. Everyone will start wearing capes if you wore a cape.

IE: [Laughing] Yeah, man, I wouldn't mind giving that a go. But, no, other than that, I don't really have any superhero that I like. There was talk about Luke Cage at one time -- I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character. They were going to do it, but I don't know what happened…

HuffPo: They are developing him into a television show.

IE: That's right, yeah.

I've seen more people recommend Elba for Black Panther than Luke Cage. Even though Netflix is planning the Luke Cage series, I don't think that they are going to get Elba for that. Is it still feasible to get The Rock? It will be interesting to see who they cast. It might be hard to get a bigger name for a series but if they can manage it, I'd be all for it.

Idris is the man, but he is just not right for Luke Cage. He's a TAD bit too old and just not hulking/muscle-bound enough. They'd have had a much easier time making him a convincing Black Panther, but that won't happen. (cough - Adewale Akinnuoye - Agbaje - cough)

Man, it bugs me when people suggest The Rock for Luke Cage. The character is 100% BLACK. Marvel's contribution to the Blaxploitation explosion of the 70s. If they didn't get Terry Crews, I'd start seeing if any other ex-NFL

Wish it was Idris

Terry Crews is the only one i know with the built for cage....Two other names i want to throw out though that would be a good idea for Cage: Tyrese or Chad Coleman (tyrese from walking dead)

I think Chiwetel Ejiofor would make a good T'Challa. They should go with a lesser known guy for Luke Cage. Isaiah Mustafa has expressed interest. He could do it.

I would be all Idris Elba being either Cage or Black Panther....certainly lightyears more then him being James Bond or Heimdall. Whilst Chris Evans being Johnny Storm had nothing to do with Marvel Studios and their cinematic universe, the fact remains, he played two mainstream Marvel characters in recent memory and it has not affected my enjoyment of his Captain America one bit (I think he nailed both characters fantastically well!). The fact that it didn't seem to bother Marvel also suggests

The fact that it didn't seem to bother Marvel also suggests that they're open to casting people we might have trouble seeing them play someone else. With that all in mind, I'd still be for Idris taking on the role of say Cage or T'Challa. As it is, a Cage show isn’t due for 2015 and who knows when we’ll see the Panther – certainly not anytime soon. So, reduce his role in the next Thor movie and begin the process of making Idris another character.

I always saw him more as Panther. He's perfect for T'Challa. I'm sure Marvel is kicking themselves over that one. Personally I'm hoping Terry Crews plays Cage, otherwise my interest will be low.

Still on the fence...

Honestly, I must be missing something when it comes to Elba. To me he was terrible in Prometheus, unnoticeable in Thor and a joke in Pacific Rim. I really don't see other peoples fascination with this guy.

As much as I love the Thor films, it kind of sucks they have wasted their supporting characters in the films with such great actors (in this case Idris Elba and Jaime Alexander) and have made it difficult for them to actually play fully complex comic book superheroes. For instance Black Panther and Wonder Woman.

You do realize that Jaime Alexander could still play Wonder Woman, since Marvel doesn't have exclusive rights on her and Wonder Woman is in the DC Universe. Marvel cannot dictate who DC casts, since there is no conflict to have her play a Marvel character and a DC character. Furthermore, if there is a problem, it is not an issue for Marvel, since they actually put the pressure on their competition.

Ironic that you would mention her, though, when you have an actor who played two Marvel

I think he was practically born to play T'challa, though I'm sure he would've been a great Luke Cage as well. I like Idris Elba as Heimdall but I kind of wish they went with someone different just so he could play other Marvel roles.

Casting

Idris Elba would've nailed it. After him, my first thought is Terry Crews, though he's a little over-saturated now. I don't doubt his acting abilities, but I don't know. He's kinda been "that huge guy" in so many films, I'd be worried that recognizability would overshadow his portrayal. Depending on the age they make the character, I'd go with John Boyega (Attack the Block), Nate Parker (Red Tails), or Isaiah Mustafa (the Old Spice Guy).

i like the terry crews suggestion. i dont think him being recognizable is a problem. well i guess if luke cage has a specific personality that clashes with terry crews (i dont know much about luke cage). but "terry crews with super powers" is a show i'd watch.

He would have made a really good Cage

But now that hes already in the MCU I kinda hope hes not up for the role, only because I don't want 1 guy playing 2 different characters in the Universe

That's too bad. He would have been great. I still hope he gets a shot at Black Panther. If not, then I want to see Chiwetel Ejiofor for Black Panther.

I think they were talking about Chadwick Boseman (42). He or Ejiofor would kill it as Black Panther.
