Review: The Three Stooges

The Three Stooges
Apr. 13, 2012by:

PLOT: Larry (Sean Hayes), Curly (Will Sasso) and Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos) leave the confines of their orphanage for the first time, in order to save it from foreclosure. They get tangled up with a femme fatale (Sofia Vergara) and her lover (Craig Bierko) - who try to fool the boys into murdering her husband, thus letting her inherit his fortune.

REVIEW: After nearly twenty years of development, The Farrelly Bros., passion project, a modern update of THE THREE STOOGES, finally hits the big screen. A virtual whos who of heavyweight actors (Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, Jim Carrey) have, at one time or another been attached to the project. However, the Farrellys eventually decided to hedge their bets with lesser names- which probably turned out to be the right choice. The three guys, Diamantopoulos as the near-psychotic Moe, Sean Hayes (the biggest name- from WILL & GRACE) as the scatterbrained Larry, and Will Sasso (MAD TV) as the clumsy oaf Curly do a damn-near perfect job of recapturing the essence of the Stooges (no Shemp though).

That said, I still hated this movie

The thing is- I just dont understand why THE THREE STOOGES needed to come back. Im sure they were funny in their time, but this brand of slapstick humor is archaic. Heck, even in the forties they were considered lowbrow (lets not forget, this was the time of Preston Sturges and screwball comedies). Still, the original shorts have a certain charm, if you take them in the original 10-15 minute, bite size chunks. But a ninety-minute Stooges movie? The first ten minutes of Stooges antics- funny. The other eighty minutes- painful.

The Farrellys devotion to the original shorts is slavish, although they obviously cant resist sprinkling in some maudlin sentiment towards the end. In a concession to commerciality, the classic Stooges pie-fight is replaced by a peeing babies fight (yes- peeing babies- thats not a typo), and if that sounds like your idea of fun- then by all means, SEE this movie.

We also get a (too) generous helping of the JERSEY SHORE cast, thanks to a plot twist in the films third episode (its cut into three parts- that tell one continuous story) that sees the boys separated for a while. The only good side of this is that the JERSEY SHORE gang actually manages to make the Stooges look reasonably intelligent by comparison.

But oy vey, this was a painful movie for me to sit through. The thing is, the THREE STOOGES just arent my thing. Everything about this hit the wrong note for me- even Larry David as a cross-dressing nun (although on the upside we do get Kate Upton as a BARELY dressed nun). However, if you happen to be a THREE STOOGES fan, or are between the ages of 5-7, you might have a great time. Its probably as good as a THREE STOOGES movie could be, so take from that what you will.

Extra Tidbit: The closing PSA is pretty funny though.

awesome movie

u Know, you're just an idiot. The theater was packed, and everyone Was Laughing their heads off at 3 stooges. My wife and i thought it's The Funniest movie This Year. They channeled the stooges perfectly, and scored....awesome movie.

I too never really understood why this project was being made. I don't know anyone these days who likes the Stooges. Like you said, in their time, they were funny. But these days, they are pretty irrelevant and it seems like the only people who really wanted to see them on the big screen are the people making the movie.

Too bad

Honestly the actors weren't that bad on their roles, what killed this movie is the stile, I looks just as similar as a disney direct to DVD comedy. The 3 Stooges in modern times doesn't work, and this movie is the proove.

I want this style dead

It makes our country stupid. "Woops! Banana peel!" BONK!

Naked Gun, Airplane, Scary Movie are great. But all these "DERRRRRP!!!" movies are seriously soooo childish in the most incoherent way.

Ugh

Im a huge Stooges fan. And I refuse to see this piece of shit. There is no point. Pay up to 50 bucks to take the wife to the theater to see this. Or just stay home and turn on AMC and watch the real Stooges? If this makes more money than Cabin in the Woods this weekend, then I have lost faith in the human race.

Why do you think the Farelly brothers wanted to do a Dumb and Dumber 2? They knew this would bomb and they need a hit on reserve.

personally...

I don't see the need for this movie, that being said maybe the rating should have been lower, I watched Stooges as a kid, and back then slapstick spoke to my childish soul. Abbot and Costello, hell even Tom and Jerry were awesome. Laughter for years. As and adult, this brand of slapstick seems like nonsense, and I'll probably wait to rent it. But I would have loved to take my 8yr old to see it, slapstick always make kids laugh. I love the comments regarding the jersey shore cast, just awesome.

You apparently cannot read. A 500 lb bell dropping on someone's head is reality? No, it's nonsense, stupid, mildly funny nonsense, but nonsense nevertheless. My grouse is not with the movie per se, I still think it's an unnecessary movie, it's with the rating, because kids of all ages should be able to see the # stooges. If you and your wife did more than chuckle then you both are knuckle heads.

First of all...the Stooges brand of comedy is NOT archaic...sure, it might not be used as much, but its still funny.
I dont think there should have been a Three Stooges movie, simply beacause its near impossible to capture the true feeling and character of the three Stooges, the way die hard fans would like it.

3 out of ten? Really? That's WAY more generous then I would've been.
