Review: The Dark Knight Rises

Jul. 18, 2012by: JimmyO

PLOT: After many years of being lost from the public eye, Bruce Wayne has found there is an evil brewing in Gotham City. Desperate to prove something to himself and those he loves, he returns to wear the bat-suit. Wayne finds an aggressive enemy in the form of a dark and demented fellow named Bane. Soon, the two are battling not for the love of a woman, but for the future of the entire city and possibly the entire planet.

REVIEW: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES!?! Indeed, it does. For the first half hour or so as I sat back to take in Christopher Nolans final chapter in the Batman Trilogy, even if it didnt quite live up to my expectations early on. The emergence of Bane (Tom Hardy) is exciting, just not as impressive as the reveal of the Joker (the late Heath Ledger) in the previous film. This is not to say that the moment isnt inspired, somehow it just didnt feel as explosive. However, Tom Hardy with his deep throaty growl underneath an ugly metal mask helps to make him one hell of a villain. He is a vicious brawny monster that seeks to free the people from a corrupt society that made a hero out of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). He seeks to save the public from their shackles only to be chained by his own. This would be exceedingly effortless for him if only Batman refused to return to save his beloved Gotham.

This latest chapter is deeper than simply bad versus good or right versus wrong for the most part. It deftly examines Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) after his alter ego has been deemed a villain. Since the previous film, Batman has been blamed for murdering Dent by a city with no knowledge of the actual events that transpired. One incredibly great moment features Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) publicly praising Dent for his legacy which presumably has left the city free from organized crime at least that is what society believes. He does so at risk of exposing a truth which he feels may do more harm than good. DARK KNIGHT RISES examines the need for truth and the accountability of justice. When Bane explodes into the town with words challenging authority as he claims the desire to give back the government to the people, he clearly carries ulterior motives. Much like the films protagonist, nothing is as clear as it may seem for any of the players involved.

There are many themes that bleed throughout Nolans majestic final chapter. The story examines such complicated issues as class struggle, social structure, morality and so much more. It carefully explores so many different layers that you begin to realize the need for the two-hour and forty-five minute running time. So much is packed into this final chapter that the longer than average running time feels absolutely necessary. While not all of it is completely effective - most notably the ho-hum romance between Wayne and Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) RISES completes the trilogy in a rewarding fashion without cheapening the grandeur of the series.

You could say that the sequel betters THE DARK KNIGHT in some ways with a story that is told on a massive scale with some serious issues to dissect on the way out of the theatre. There is no fear that this was simply a cash grab sequel, as this proves that Nolan clearly had a direction that he wanted to pursue. The script revisits BATMAN BEGINS with the return of Liam Neeson who connects Wayne to other key players. Another characters return garnered some genuine excitement from the crowd that I was with. This is an indisputably well crafted feature that may not have the same level of thrills as the masterful performance that Ledger gave, yet it makes for a near perfect end.

DARK KNIGHT RISES is a reawakening for Wayne. Thus, Bale gives his best performance in the series thanks to the time spent examining Wayne and his destructive path. His character is forced to overcome a series of obstacles that is near maddeningly impossible. RISES offers a balance between the cerebral beginnings of BATMAN BEGINS to what Bruce Wayne started with in THE DARK KNIGHT. Early on when he faces a ferocious and methodical Bane, there is as much at stake to his inner peace as is his already wounded mortal body. One of the best sequences in the film offers us a little back-story on Bane as he offers Wayne the same chance we are lead to believe he was given. The literal light at the end of the tunnel in a prison is an effective way to watch our hero rediscover the strength to fight or what he once had.

Anne Hathaways Selina Kyle is a complicated character that desires the chance to start fresh. She is a thief with slightly noble beliefs, even if they come at a cost. The rumors youve heard are true; she is perfect in the role. She is able to project Selines multi-layered Catwoman and gives THE DARK KNIGHT RISES an added spark. Thankfully, the rest of the cast is equally impressive including Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an idealistic police officer who sees past the corruption that surrounds him. And both Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are a welcome return as the two men who understand the heavy burden Bruce Wayne has placed upon himself.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is impressive indeed. Hans Zimmer creates a haunting and methodical score that swells underneath the film. The special effects are beyond impressive, both the usage of practical and CGI. And yes, seeing this in IMAX is one-hundred percent worth it. It seemed that the majority of the film was IMAX ready which combines fully with the breathtaking images on screen. From the towering shots of Gotham City to the exhilarating action set pieces, Nolan has crafted a worthy adversary when it comes to award season. Maybe the consistent tension from the previous film isnt as prominent here. Even still, this is one of the most ambitiously mesmerizing films I've seen in quite awhile, and it is one that could only come from Christopher Nolan.

How is Catwoman a complicated character? She's the thief with a heart of gold. No surprises with her character arc.

I liked it but...

I can't help but feel disappointed in some aspects of it. It felt epic, but the story to me wasn't as engaging. I felt like I was watching The Avengers during "The Bat" sequences and the final act with the bomb only cemented it. In fact, I didn't like the whole bomb aspect of the story, felt like a weak addition to up the ante. We've seen it before.

I really did like it, though, just not as strong as the first two installments.

This movie was dis-appointing to say the least. You have lost all credibility as a reviewer in my eyes from now on, but I'm just one guy with my own opinion. I had so much hope for this film as I absolutely loved the first two, but with so many plot holes, Batman's voice, and a silly plan for the villain that made no sense, think about... no, really think about it, it was just stupid, I could never get in to the movie. I'm just... I, ugh! I can't believe you used the word "award" in your

7/10 - movie was not as good as the hype. Better than Begins - sure but many films are. Nowhere near as good as The Dark Knight. Not giving away spoilers in any sense so I will keep many of my opinions to myself, but I was pretty disappointed.

Umm...

This happens all the time on this site.
You didn't have one negative point to make, yet you still gave it a 9/10.
What the hell is the deal with you guys, can you not give anything a 10 anymore, is it a new rule at JoBlo? I mean if you don't think the film deserves a full 10 that's fine, but at least let us know why. This is the ump-tee-nth time I have seen a perfect review with full praise and no bad points given a 9/10.

Reading between the lines...

Great review JimmyO. I've just come back from my Imax screening (by the way, no previews here in Melbourne. Lights out, movies starts rolling. Was looking forward to seeing the MOS teaser.

Anyway, after viewing TDKR and watching the MOS panel at comic con, I truly believe Nolan is more involved with the DC movie universe, than is being made out to be. We have in no way, seen the end to Nolan and Batman.

I saw it last night, and while I can't rate it quite that high, I still found it to be a satisfactory conclusion to The Dark Knight Trilogy. Here's my full review:

Just saw it today, and all I have to say is "Thank You Mr.Nolan for doing what you do best". While you do miss The Joker's presence every now and then, you also realize that Bane is a more-than-worthy villain to fill the psychotic shoes of the Clown Prince Of Crime. Bravo, Nolan, and everyone who worked their asses off on this film. It was a magnificent trilogy and one that aged perfectly well. I can't believe Batman Begins evolved into this, but I'm more than glad that it did.

One of the best cinema experiences of my life!

I watched the midnight show in Australia and I just want to thank the whole cast and crew of this amazing movie for bringing so much credibility and epic-ness to batman on film. Every single actor brought their A game and the story and themes in the movie were so profound. It may not have the impact of the late Heath Ledgers performance, but it is still a very well rounded movie that was a joy to watch from the first scene.

Special mention for Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, almost stealing the whole movie. What a performance! And Tom Hardy was just brilliant as Bane, bringing so much emotion to a role where half his face is obscured by a very awesome looking mask.

I could go on and on but the main point is that TDKR is the perfect bookend for Nolans batman films. Can't wait to get the trilogy boxset!

How on Earth can you review this movie and leave NOTHING about Tom Hardy's performance? Also, you should say there are spoilers in the review since you give away Liam Neeson's return. Thanks for that.

Neobob187: This isn't the first time that you "troll" our reviewer, so you better re-read our RULES/GUIDELINES that you signed up with, because you're getting close to being banned here. You say he said "NOTHING" about Tom Hardy's performance and proceed to then copy/paste 107 words in 463 characters about Hardy from his review?? It's HIS review, not yours. I guess you and I have differing definitions of what "NOTHING" means. The "spoiler" has also been out there for a while, so I suggest you

I kind of figured this would be the case with the film getting overwhelming praise. But, I am glad for it. I wanted this film to be, at least, as good as The Dark Knight, and it seems this is the case. This will end up being the best trilogy of films since The Lord of the Rings, and I am thankful for that.

So glad Jimmy O's review was first on this site. I like that his reviews focus on the film at hand only. His insights are spot on & is not afraid to say whats good & whats bad yet still always seems to recommend the films. Any other reviewer would have compared TDKR to TDK & most likely say its not this or that like the previous films. I agree that this movie needed to be epic & i love that the movie is so long. So all in all great review & i look forward to seeing this movie multiple times.

It appears Nolan has created a Batman saga that fans have been wanting for a very long time. He didn't give into studio BS & stuck to his vision & you have to respect a filmmaker like that, He is definitely this generations Speilberg & these 3 films are his Indiana Jones trilogy. Now we can look forward to his future films past Batman.

Can't help but wonder....

...with all the focus on the success of these movies being box office and the RT/Metacritic score, what the effect of this following TDK will be. Every bad review I have heard about this movie is simple: you can't top TDK and Heath Ledger's Joker. I agree. But it sucks that this movie is getting flak for following a masterpiece. That being said, I am pumped for this movie.

Thank you :)

Jimmy O may I just say I always read your reviews and rate your opinion on a film very highly. For film critics I go to Mark Kermode, Peter Bradshaw and you only.

Once again as always it was a good read and the film hasn't been spoiled for me.

Cheers fella :)

Nope, wrong critic. I did however give it an 8 out of 10. And currently Spider-man is at 74% on Rotten Tomatoes so we weren't the only ones that liked it. I guess it is just easier to dismiss somebody because you don't like a film they did, correct? I'd call it lazy.

I just came back from seeing this, and it truly is the best Batman film ever made. This is not a hyperbole or an exaggeration made under the dizzy thrall of the movie. Yes, Bane and Catwoman are not a match for Ledger's performance. However, everything comes together better than it did in The Dark Knight. The ante is amped up considerably, the stakes are far higher for all parties involved and best of all, there's a solid plot thread and no false endings or lull periods.

Be honest

Honestly who would ever even consider it a possibility for Bane to be better than the joker. Its common sense that Bane cant trump the Joker. Hes the fucking joker. I think I will enjoy this movie more going in with the mindset that no villain can outdo Ledgers performance as the Joker! Going in expecting Bane to maybe outdo the Joker is ludicrous.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

Ever since I read last week that Nolan took some cues from A Tale of Two Cities, I started reading it again in hopes of maybe gleaning some added insight into the story. But reading a little back story on the French Revolution and reading your description of Bane made me think that maybe Nolan had this idea of having Bane and Batman's story unfold in what would be a kind of Reign of Terror in Gotham. Some of the political landscape here in America parallels Paris, France in the late 1780's. Maybe the Gothamites at some point get pissed off enough to start their own revoltution to take back a government owned by the wealthy. Maybe this could be Nolan's idea of what a second American Revolution would look like told through the narrative prism of a Batman movie? Maybe the weed i smoked is too good, but either way, I am even more excited for this movie!

Why not 10/10!

Jesus, a movie this great comes out and all you can do is give it 9/10?! Really? This is Nolan we are talking about! The director who redefined cinema, and made us completely reevaluated what we once considered to be masterpieces. Nolan basically taught us to see a new color, thus making all other colors seem dull in comparison, and the best you can do is 9/10? Learn what great cinema is, then write a review.

I've got my tickets, and prepared to have my life changed! Are you prepared?! In

Hahaha wow; this is what you call a devotee of nolan. When you blindly follow a person based just on the person and not the ideals of what makes a great film, you no longer appreciate the actual cinema experiance. Your review of this flick is meaningless cause you've already scored the film even before watching it. Just enjoy the film kid and let the professionals handle the reviews.

Sometimes i feel that people are scared to give a perfect score because "nothing is perfect", but for me, if a movie lives up to the hype, delievers good action, good story, (and in the case of comic book films) does justice to the character then why not give the 10/10 - 9 is still damn good anyway!

Just Curious

While I understand that they are two different films with two different tones, how would you compare it to "The Avengers?"

I can't speak for JimmyO, but "The Avengers" was an enjoyable roller coaster ride that was really a lot of good fun without being stupid or silly, but generally much much lighter fare than The Dark Knight Rises. The Dark Knight Rises certainly has its brief moments of levity and has a lot of action in it, but it's thematically heavier and more sombre.

Thanks for the feedback, Jedd! I'm sure I'll enjoy TDKR as much as I did The Avengers . . . probably more! (I'm biased towards Batman!)

Hi xylemsith, I think Jedd has it right. There is a certain amount of fun in THE AVENGERS, like a roller coaster ride it feels more like a comic book movie in its most pure form. TDKR, much like the two before, is more akin to something like THE UNTOUCHABLES, a crime saga with comic book elements. I would probably say that TDKR is a better made film, yet Avengers was so much fun.

I'm taking Friday off and going to the 9am show
(last time I took a day off for a film was Phantom Menace).
Great review by the way.

Edit: actually come to think of it, I took a half day for opening day of Rambo

Not much to say besides I can't wait to see this thing and I'm jealous that you already have sir. Less than two days left until the midnight showing, I'm excited beyond belief.
