Review: Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

PLOT: Tony Stark has faced challenges before and the effects of his previous adventure have been getting to him on a personal level. To make matters worse, he and his colleagues are soon tested by a villainous and extremely deadly terrorist by the name of Mandarin. WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

REVIEW: IRON MAN 3 begins with Tony Stark revealing a part of his past through narration. Soon, we are witness to an explosion that is bursting from behind his many Iron Man suits so prominently displayed in his in-house workshop. Something pretty devastating is clearly happening. Yet quickly, the unlikeliest of heroes changes his mind and takes the viewer back to 1999. It is then he meets the painfully awkward and spectacled Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce, who is nearly unrecognizable). He asks Stark, and his date for the evening Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall), if they would consider being part of a think-tank of sorts for his invention to better mankind. Promising to meet Killian, Stark forgets about the strange fellow leaving this miserable soul stranded. This decision will most certainly come back to haunt him.

Since IRON MAN 2, Stark has faced something very few mortal men could ever imagine. As part of THE AVENGERS he faced the deadly threat of an alien army and nearly fell to his death - quite literally from outer space. In the latest film from Marvel, this monumentally heroic undertaking has taken a toll on him physically and mentally. This includes a series of panic attacks and wicked nightmares. It has become so difficult that even the love of his life, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), is feeling the strain. To make matters all the more complicated, there is a deadly string of bombings going on with a dastardly devil named Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) taking credit for it. When Stark’s security go-to-guy Happy (Jon Favreau) is injured during one of the attacks, the Iron Man takes it upon himself to call out this menacing terrorist.

Stark/Iron Man is a unique hero with an edge thanks to another knockout performance by the film's star. After taking this character on for the fourth time now, Robert Downey Jr. continues to create a layered individual who is trying to deal with the awesome nature of what he has become. The references to THE AVENGERS are especially well played here without becoming a crutch or relying on the previous film. Unlike IRON MAN 2, this sequel doesn’t dwell too much inside the world of the Avengers aside from how it affected Stark. As snarky and egocentric as Stark may be, he retains much of the charm he infused into the first film and feels a bit more heroic here than he did in the second film.

The stakes are also much higher for the people in Stark’s life that he holds dear. Clearly Happy finds himself in danger, yet it is Pepper Potts who faces serious danger creating a desperation that audiences can root for. I’ve always appreciated the chemistry between Downey and Paltrow and it is in full effect here. It’s sparked with humor and charm and it makes their relationship much more interesting. She is thrust into his world more so this time around which raises the stakes and also the unpredictability of the entire film. Thankfully both of these talented actors give their all and never feel as though they are simply cashing a paycheck. And am I the only one who finds Paltrow as Potts painfully adorable?

As far as supporting cast, you can’t do much better than Guy Pearce and especially Ben Kingsley. While I won’t go into detail about the role they play in all of this, I will say that Kingsley is utterly fantastic here. He is terrifying when need be and far more layered than one would expect. The actor is so good that he nearly steals the whole damn movie, even though some viewers may not be thrilled with the direction they take the character, there is no doubt that he is absolutely brilliant. Other supporting players that stand out include James Badge Dale and William Sadler - Rebecca Hall’s not so bad either. It is also satisfying to see the very talented Don Cheadle have a little more to do than simply clean up after Mr. Stark.

When Shane Black was first announced as the new director in the series, it seemed to be an intriguing, yet questionable choice. Happily the director brings out some of the intensity that he did with some of his earlier scripts including LETHAL WEAPON and KISS KISS BANG BANG (which he directed as well). There is an urgency that builds to an especially exciting climax, one which is sure to please Marvel fans. As dramatic and dark as it can get, it never loses the humor which has become an important factor in the Marvel Universe. With Favreau’s Happy Hogan consistently requesting “passes” at the workplace or the fun dialogue between the film’s stars, there is a nice balance between the dark and the light.

For anyone who has watched the trailer, when you see Stark's mansion fall, it is just as impressive as it appears to be. Considering this is only Black’s second directorial feature, he handled the effects especially well. All the effects work is definitely on par with the rest of the Marvel films which shouldn't be too surprising at this point as they seem to know what they are doing by now. Even the Iron Man models took on a brand new life in an inventive and thrilling way. By the third film (fourth if you count THE AVENGERS) the IRON MAN formula could have easily become predictable and dull. Perhaps what this particular franchise needed was a new voice and Black is a perfect fit.

IRON MAN 3 delivers on nearly all counts. My only complaint is that it runs a little long and feels like it could have been tightened up, especially as it steers closer to its impressive climax. And if you plan on seeing it in 3D, there is nothing really special about the conversion (unnecessary), although it may be worth it simply to see it in IMAX. In the end, the humor and thrills and everything else that made the original so refreshing and unique is here and then some! The score by Bryan Tyler is befitting as well and is especially nice to hear as the credits roll as opposed to some modern rock or rap song. In every way, this latest chapter is one of the best Marvel features to date. Tony Stark’s latest adventure is an enthusiastically exciting ride that never loses its humor or its edge.

Extra Tidbit: At this point do I really need to remind you to stay past the credits?

During Kingsley's reveal scene with RDJ, everyone in the audience applauded. I have to agree, he wasn't on screen for that long, but like everyone else, he gave his entire self to the role and it paid of in spades.

"I will say that Kingsley is utterly fantastic here."

He was hardly in it, so, to me, he wasn't close to being fantastic.

Anyone else notice the similarities to Lethal Weapon 2? That's not a criticism btw!

Cheated

Its a strong word but I felt cheated on how the plot turned out, we were advertised something and its was a complete cop out. I've never been so disappointed at the cinema until I saw this.
It was a good movie but fell far below the standard of any of the other phase one and avengers films.

Ruined...

The movie was ruined for me after the halfway mark with the 'big reveal'. I never saw it coming, and was constantly hoping that they were just messing with us and they'd right it at the end.

Such a shame, cause there is so much to like about this movie. Halfway through I was convinced that this was going to be second place behind Avengers when it comes to all the films in the series, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

I'd hoped for more

I thought this movie would be the pinnacle of superhero movies and it turned out to be rather boring. It wasn't the worst, but far from the best. The handling of Extremis, Pepper, and the Mandarin were all a giant let down. The highlights were Tony's banter, and Jon Favreau. Just a very underwhelming experience for me. 6/10

A let down

Just saw it and, um, if you only know the films and don't know the comics, you'll be OK with it and probably love it. It was great until about the 1/2 point. You will either go with it or you will absolutely hate it. I hated it. Completely lost me after that. It's not a terrible film but what a let down after that point. I'd give it a 5.5/10 because as I said, you'll either go with it or you won't.

Really?

FIRST: SPOILERS....

IM3 is a good movie, but 9/10 is way too much. I'd give it a 7 or a 7.5 just because Kingsley and Pearce are both amazing in their roles. I like the fact that the movie focuses on the character of Tony Stark and not just the Superhero or the action scenes. The plane rescue scene was amazing but i hated how the bad guy gets killed...i mean you develop a character who has what it takes to go one on one with lots of suits but gets destroyed

The ''detective'' part was kinda cool but the relationship with the kid bored the hell out of me. At first i thought there was an excesive amount of jokes but is RDJ (not Tony Stark) we're talking about in here, so it was pretty reasonable Black went that way. And the post-credits scene was pretty much redundant and added nothing new to the series.

It was all pretty boring. It wasn't until the about the end i realised has he actually been in the suit less than 2.
Totally agree about the death, they should have killed her off. Would have had mire of an emotional ending.
And you are spot on about the humor, far to much. It was almost slapstick, at the end when tony is fighting the villian and calls his suit and its hits the top of the rig and falls apart. Totally ruined a gripping climax.

9 out of tens a joke.

Good to hear.

My initial reaction to reading the spoiler news yesterday was to be disappointed. It sounds like a really lame plot device. But, like anything else, doesn't it depend on the way it is presented? And how can I judge its quality without having seen it? Reading a ton of positive reviews for IM3 today has me back on board.

Sadly, no AC/DC. But from the review I read, they said the ending credits sound much better with the movie's own soundtrack playing. I'll take their word for it, but I would've liked some AC/DC

Lets kick off the summer season with a bang!!

I am so glad this is getting good reviews. I liked 2, but it was really lacking in a lot of ways. This sounds like it could be the best of the trilogy.

meh

Thought it was very average. Rdj being his usual annoying self.
The end credit scene is alot of shit.
Not as half as good as the trailers make out.
And rdj gets to much praise, hes cra in every other lead role. Because he cant act worth a fuck. He plays himself which is great for the role of stark, but lets be honest there's no emotion to him or depth.
Brando in the godfather, de niro in raging bull that's amazing performances. Not some overpaid egotistical douche.

He should go back

I think the amazing spider-man was better than the original trillogy.
Give me an example of RDJ giving a great performance in a leading roll?
and why am I trolling? Because i didn't enjoy it? Its not like i hated it just don't think it deserves 9 out of ten.

And soloist as a spider-man fan i feel the amazing Spiderman brought some depth to the character rather. Rather than have him portrayed like a little whiny moron.

I feel the same way about RDJ, hes always the same character (himself)..and always the same tendencies. On top of that i didnt plan on seeing IM3. All the Marvel films are popcorn films at best, unless they do a solo Hulk film with Rffalo i wont be paying to see any Marvel films thats just cause im a huge Hulk fan, and Hulk's been screwed over. I've felt this way after watching the last 3 Marvel films (Avengers included).

Well you seem to be a very eloquent person. If you at least complained constructively about the "whys" and "hows" and such of why you didn't like Iron Man 3. It's hard to take someone who criticizes with using "fuck", "shit" and "douche" as arguments. I really don't like to use the term "troll", but this seems like a clear case of trolling.

Charlie sheen used to be a great actor too, now he is just an terrible acting egotistical idiot as well. Look at rdj other leading roles of the last few years. None of which are very good because he either tries to act and it doesn't come off or he just plays himself. How is it acting if he just acts like himself. Doesn't bring anything to the role.

Its fine a couple of times, but i think even rdj is sick of it by not coming back.

Also speak to people who have seen the film most agree

Perhaps he is playing a version of himself in these films, but he certainly can pull out a truly heart-felt performance. One or two have already been mentioned. I'd give it the same score, this was such an excellent film. It has Shane Black's stamp all over it (the Christmas setting, for one), and it really is different and refreshing while delivering the elements expected of a tentpole blockbuster (big action setpieces and all that). It's intelligent, really entertaining and tightly plotted. I suspect some Iron Man fans might not be too pleased with how The Mandarin was handled, but that didn't bother me that much. Really good stuff, I'm definitely

Hurm....

Can't wait to see this. It's my most anticipated movie of the year, but after the avengers, I mean, obviously the entire world heard about what happened and the heroes that saved the world from aliens - and just that aliens and superheroes and other dimensions exist - I haven't seen the film, but why would any human want to pick a fight with one of the avengers? Aliens in Thor I can understand, but any human that has a grudge, even if they could outsmart Tony and come up with better technology

Aliens in Thor I can understand, but any human that has a grudge, even if they could outsmart Tony and come up with better technology to kill him with, I would just assume by knowing what happened in the avengers that if the hulk, Thor, and cap didn't show up to help, they would def show up after he was killed for payback. So...who would be stupid enough to fuck with iron man, cap, or (especially) the hulk

Well, in Iron Man 3, it's a bit more complicated than that.

For the record, it's been a long tradition to go darker for the sequels : Godfather 2, Empire, Temple of Doom, Back to the future 2 (yes it is), Batman Returns, Lethal Weapon 2, X2...

Great movie ....

... far superior than IM2. I agree with everything JImmyO said.
They could have called it "Shane Black's Iron Man" because you can feel the guy's touch in every dialogue and jokes. And of course, it's set during Christmas time !
Kuddos to Marvel for giving NOTHING away about the plot in the trailers. Such a thrilling ride.
I won't spoil the post-credit scene, but I would say that, while fun, it's the least interesting post-credit scene of all. Don't expect much of it.

Less interesting than the Schwarma scene after the Avengers credits?

Well, compared to Schwarma, there's dialogue here. But Schwarma was funnier.

Yeah I loved this film and it sets a high standard for the rest of the North American summer.Iron Man Three goes too the top of my list of the Marvel films(but this may be because I'm still on the high of seeing it).

Awesome!

Everything I keep hearing about this movie makes me more and more excited to see it. The only qualm I may have with it is that it is apparently one of the funniest Marvel movies to date, even more so than Avengers. All the trailers have been projecting a gloomy, intense, dangerous feel to it, and I'm afraid all the humor will shortchange the drama somewhat. And although I don't know what the supposed twist is, I'm sure I won't have a problem with it. I wouldn't consider myself a comic book

I wouldn't consider myself a comic book purist, evidenced by how the few twists and intentional misleadings in The Dark Knight Rises didn't bother me at all either. Iron Man 3 should be great!

I'm not aware what spoilers you heard, but according from what I understand here I guess you talk about that WTF moment I just witnessed in IM3...
Some purist are going to go apeshit for sure, that's the first thing I thought when I saw it. Then I was too occupied laughing that I didn't have time to care for those purists. But yeah, for a second, I was like, WTF ?!
