Review: Man of Steel

Jun. 13, 2013by: Eric Walkuski

PLOT: As the planet Krypton is destroyed, young Kal-El is shuttled off to Earth to bridge the gap between the two worlds. After years of living his life as Clark Kent, the being is exposed to the true nature of his past when confronted by members of his own kind.

REVIEW: Zack Snyders MAN OF STEEL has moments of wondrous, operatic grandeur within it, even while it basically fast-forwards through the Superman mythos. Mixing in ample doses of iconic Superman imagery, corny Americana and brain-busting sci-fi action on a very large scale, Snyders film is both a fitting reboot of Superman and a bit of a missed opportunity. Its sure to please fans of summer blockbuster entertainment, and purists of the character will not be able to complain too harshly, since the character is respected accordingly, but its also not likely to make anyone forget Richard Donners SUPERMAN or Christopher Reeves unforgettable portrayal of the character.

And thats okay. Im sure Snyder, his producer Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David Goyer never truly sought to reinvent the character or his tale so drastically that wed completely distance ourselves from his comic book/movie roots. In fact, the filmmakers are all too certain that we know all of the beats of Kal-Els story, which is why much of the films first half is sort of like a greatest hits of necessary moments in Clark Kents life. We know hes sent from a dying planet called Krypton by a noble father (Russell Crowe, really good), that hes eventually rescued by good people, the Kents (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane), and raised as an ordinary boy who is forced to hide his extraordinary abilities. We know that he struggles with his own understanding of the amazing power he holds, that as the son of two worlds he needs to find the unlikely balance between being a god and a farmboy. That hell meet Lois Lane (Amy Adams), fall in love and eventually accept his destiny as the savior of a planet that needs him.

Snyder and company hit all these moments knowing we know they must hit them. Its a Superman movie made for people who are aware of Superman, so in an odd way, it feels old and new again at the same time. Theres no doubt that the filmmakers revere Superman, and the film takes a serious, sincere look at the son of Krypton, even if his story is played out in somewhat perfunctory flashes. MAN OF STEEL gives you like six seasons of Smallville in about 30 minutes, dishing out those important Superman moments in brief morsels. As a result, the movie often doesnt possess a strong narrative flow, its reliance on flashbacks and snapshots of Clarks life has the tendency to halt momentum instead of build it.

Snyder bolsters the storys atmosphere of hurried impatience with some vivid special effects and set-pieces; of course, theres always time for destruction and chaos, like when Metropolis is under attack by the determined General Zod or when Clarks hometown of Smallville finds itself at the center of an extraterrestrial cage fight. Theres no doubt that Snyder does well by the all-or-nothing standards weve come to expect in a movie as big as this, and even when its being a tad redundant, theres plenty of flat-out cool fun to be had at the expense of countless buildings and about a million human lives.

MAN OF STEEL isnt as lighthearted as its predecessors, but thankfully things dont get too moody or grim (you know, not counting the high death toll), as some may have feared considering Nolan and Snyders track records. The film is as straight-faced as any movie featuring spaceships attacking Kansas can possibly be, but whats important is that Superman, as a character, is handled very well. Theyve kept him an optimist and he's an overall humble, likable guy. I wondered if Snyder would steep Superman in darkness, give him the brooding, self-loathing treatment, but his gentle, almost naive nature is salvaged, and his eventual rise to the role of Earths guardian is earned. Superman is allowed to be Superman.

Henry Cavill is extremely well cast in the role. It remains to be seen is hell surpass Reeve as the quintessential Superman (hard to imagine), but he settles into the character very comfortably right off the bat, possessing the sweet charm inherent in Clark/Superman. It does not hurt that Cavill is an imposing screen presence, with magnetic good looks and the natural self-assurance that comes with having the it factor. Hes a movie star, plain and simple, and he is Superman through and through.

The rest of the cast is rounded out exceptionally - really, this is as good as an ensemble in a movie like this can get. The casting is so crucial because most of the supporting characters are fairly one-note: Lois Lane is determined, so Amy Adams is in intense-but-still-cute mode; Pa Kent is perceptive and the model of an American dad, hence Costner fulfills that need; Ma Kent is giving and understanding, and Diane Lane is instantly lovable, so that match is made in heaven. Laurence Fishburne appears as a take-no-crap Perry White, and he's authoritative in the role, but he's given even less to do than the others.

If theres any real disappointment cast wise, it comes in the form of Michael Shannons performance as General Zod, Supermans main antagonist. When the casting was announced, Shannon appeared to be an incredibly ideal fit, as hes never met a strange character he couldnt sink his teeth into, but here he seems to be phoning it in. He yells, he glares, he appears appropriately tortured by the prospect of his race being wiped out, but theres just no fun being had, by Shannon or by us while watching him. In all seriousness, his second-in-command (and possible lady love) Faora, played by the bewitching Antje Traue, is a more sinister, intimidating creation. Her brief flashes of fury are rather awesome, and it's a shame we don't see more.

MAN OF STEEL will not make you rethink everything you know about Superman; its perhaps not even the amazing movie about the character you have been waiting a long time for. But on a summer blockbuster level, it gets the job done. I'm thinking - betting - the sequel will be even better, now that they've gotten all of this origin story stuff out of the way. Remind you of another Nolan-sponsered superhero..?

I am not a huge fan of Superman, but i loved the movie. I thought some of the fighting and action was over-done. I liked the characters and the story line in this film. The motivations for the character seemed more real than any of the other Superman movies, so the script was superior.

Bollocks! Definitely an 8 or 9 - Michael Shannon WAS the movie. That guy is simply a real treasure. Maybe you had your hopes up too high, tsk tsk. And Faora had enough great scenes bro.

Pretty spot on.

I wanted to prove you wrong, but I believe 7/10 is pretty right on. Maybe 7.8/10. There are actually a lot of things to like in the film, but it is not a home run. Superman needed a better villain. Shannon is a great actor, and gives the part everything he has, but it's a cardboard part.

Everyones a critic!

I have highly anticipated this movie since I walked out of the theater from superman returns, of course below estimated ticket sales killed a second round for that franchise and I truly feel that a second film would have been much better. I am going to wait to see this for myself and not read too much into the reviews before making my own judgment, I am really hoping that the majority of the public does the same. There may be some issues with this reboot however I hope it does well enough to

Superman movies are always going to struggle meeting everyones expectations imho.

not crazy about this review

It sounds like a fanboy rant. I can't stand when people use the words phoning it in, it's an unfair criticism to place on an actor. Another thing is the idea of every reboot & what not having to be an origin story. To me they are very very boring. It's the same reason I didn't care for Batman Begins or last years Amazing Spider-Man, because it takes up so much of the running time.

I believe Superman is probably the most well-known comic book characters, you DO NOT have to explore his origin because it is about as simple as it can get. He was born that way with all of his powers on another planet. THAT"S IT, how much more needs to be explored. You DO NOT have to go thru all the mythos of where he came from, in other words, make him even more mysterious. It just becomes so repetitive & insult the intended audience.

I'll wait for Bumbray's review also and see from another perspective because this review just doesn't cut it for me.

In my opinion, this should get rated anywhere between a 7 and 9.

I don't put much weight in the fact that Superman Returns has decent RT scores. It was the first Superman movie in almost 20 years so people were predisposed to want to love it. Plus, if you loved the Donner films, you should love SR. Expectations have changed now for Superman movies and comic book movies in general.

I'm sure there were people that geeked out over Phantom Menace on its release and would've given it a high RT

Well, I can't complain. It is disappointing this isn't the film it could have been, but as long as it's entertaining, I can't complain too much. At the very least, they finally made a movie that achieves a scale that fits Superman, so there's that. Perhaps, next time, we'll get a movie that goes to other places besides where we've already been. That might actually wow us.

It's fairly simple why the critics are not so quick to praise MAN OF STEEL. They never have and never will understand Comic Book Movies. They just play follow the leader when it comes to Super Hero Flicks. They were quick to praise IRON MAN 3 and got a backlash from the fanboys, so they decided to not jump the gun this time and give MOS mediocre scores just to save face. It's all bullshit anyway. The Audience Ratings is at 97%, which is what I go by (most of the time), and that's from like

I like how some people talk as if ALL critics are in cahoots together, or something. It's a ridiculous way to think. Like they all have a giant board meeting and decide they're going to all slam a movie for this reason or that. And just to clarify, that 97% is NOT an audience approval rating. The movie isn't released yet, so that's the percentage who "WANT TO SEE" the movie. I am going tonight, and I hope to enjoy it.

This is the problem with hype. I'm not saying Rotten Tomatoes is 100% accurate but have you even seen this movie before assuming that it is better then Superman Returns? While Superman Returns had its flaws, just because it didn't have boatload of action doesn't mean its a bad movie.

kinda figured thats what the score would be on this site. I've been checking out other peoples reviews for the past couple of days and the one thing seems to be the same with them all.....and that is that this film is in no way a bad film, but dont get your expectations too high - like it doesnt really kick off til about 60 minutes in, the dialogue scenes are to long or the CGI overload. One difference though is i read that Zod was a cool character, but not as iconic as "Donners" Zod and thats

The problem with Superman kicking ass is that the villains he fights kick his ass just as much so you can't even appreciate the ass that he kicks. It becomes two invincible robots with no differences between them just bashing each other. How is that entertaining? At least with some other superheroes you have differences in powers that make it more interesting. They should have chosen another villain with discernible abilities.

They are building to other villians, I would contest that Ra's in Batman Begins is just the same as Batman without the suit, obviously the same training and methods, and Ra's had an army just like him. I thought it was great, and it was great to finally see him kick ass, was it perfect, no way, but its what we have been waiting for

This is so much better than Superman Returns it's a joke. I watched Returns the night after seeing MOS and it just confirmed to me that MOS is everything that Returns isn't. So, if you love the Donner films or SR and are expecting that, brace yourself for disappointment.

Meh

Disappointing. Just finished watching. I really wanted to enjoy it, and while some parts were decent it just wasn't that fun. So much repetitive action that it just felt long and boring. If watching two invincible guys being smashed into buildings for twenty minutes sounds like fun to you than you'll probably enjoy this. Even the scenes before that being run through the other buildings and fields was just more of the same. The Avengers final battle was much better but there was some actual light

The trailer looked much better. A lot of quick cut action shots, as well, made it hard to tell was was happening especially on Krypton.

I've noticed that most negative reviews want Superman to be a charming and whitty character..lol ...man this movie will divide people like no other. I am going to see this one later tonight...I know I am going to love it. And I hope Zack Snyder releases that 3 hour cut on Blu-Ray.

That's not true. I've been negative all along because there hasn't been on good trailer yet. They're all so gaudy, and over dramatic it's sickening. But I will as always go into it with an open mind. It's just weird that they've change superman so much from what he is, and people are still excited. That said I thinks the poor reviews are doing it a favor for people like me who aren't looking forward to it. Know I expect less and may be surprised.

then your in the 1% who didnt like what they saw in the trailers, most were blown away and if you have been negative all along like you say then what i said is true, the negative comments are from people who have been negative all along, you can say you went in with an open mind but if you didnt like the trailers you werent going in with an open mind, not to say you didnt try but the trailers gave you a feel of the movie and you didnt like it, and that was in your mind going in. I remember Batman begins got 7/10 here... and a lot of critics were not really convinced with it initially. And SUPERMAN RETURNS got 75% in Rotten Tomatoes and today everybody hates it. Some movies gets better with time...

On another note. the idea of using flashbacks to tell the origin story is pretty reminiscent of Batman Begins. Bruce Wayne's entire origin story was told through flashbacks as he builds and creates the idea of Batman. Seems like Snyder used Nolan's formula to establish the origin and at the same time give some action/story.
Still haven't seen it, but Friday night can't get here soon enough.

Why does every review of this movie have to comment on how it stacks up against Donner's Superman? It doesn't matter, it doesn't factor into this movie at all. This isn't a remake or sequel to those movies, it's a new beginning and a new adaptation of Superman for the big screen. Because if the movie's success depends on how it stacks up against your feelings of nostalgia for Donner's film, then there's no way to determine if this movie, on it's own, is any good.

There will always be comparisons because thats just the norm. The difference being Superman needed to be rebooted. After barely 5 years Spider-Man did not need to be, was way too early & it told almost the same story, nothing was fresh.

I'm waiting on Bumbray and/or Jimmy O's review. Walkuski seems to enjoy dissecting movies before he begins actually reviewing them. Which is fine for some people, but I prefer working from the outside in.

I loved every minute of MAN OF STEEL! I found Shannon very entertaining to watch and the action filled last act blew my mind. It lived up to my very high expectations and I will see it again this weekend! The Superman movie I had been waiting for. Wow!

Let me rant for just a minute. I really don't understand why I keep seeing multiple reviews of MOS as having "too much action"-I've actually seen this complaint about the movie so many times already. Is that really a legit complaint? For God's sake it's a summer, action, comic book based movie-what the hell do these critics think we're expecting out of this film. I'm a long time superman fan and I'm by no means expecting the "Schindler's List" of comic book movies-I wan't to be entertained

I'm a long time superman fan and I'm by no means expecting the "Schindler's List" of comic book movies-I wan't to be entertained plain and simple. And although I do enjoy watching the first 2 Donner films-nostalgia-let's be honest, they're very corny by today's standards, so any comparisons to those films is just ridiculous. Lastly, why the F*** do people keep bringing up the RT score?????? They're ratings are such garbage. I mean come on, according to their scores Thor, Captain America, IM3 and even Cloud Atlas (just to throw in a random) had higher scores!!! None of those movies were very solid, some of them were actually a huge mess at times. That twist in IM3 was just unforgivable. All these ratings and reviews are determined by which studio caters to each critic the most. This being said, I'll take a 7/10 on this film. I'm still pumped to see it!! Ok-done

The thing is that it's very good that a Superman film has big action sequences, it's just that the third act of this one is a great big action scene, and that means that for some reviewers, the story has effectively been tossed aside in favour of an action climax. I'm not totally of that persuasion, but I think it was not that there was too much action, but that it got kind of loud and noisy. It's Zod and Superman battling each other through a mostly digital Metropolis, so it's kind of like the

I'm referring to the majority of critics out there, and people who have seen seen it not liking it, compared to the people who have enjoyed it. I will still watch it, but I'm saying that all along this movie has been over hyped, and now the majority don't like it. It's not even a matter of if I like it or not.

My only beef is that they should have called this one Son Of Krypton because it's just more fitting, then call the next one Man Of Steel, then the third one Superman.

Loads and Loads Of Fun! (No Spoilers)

I expected this movie to have a different, more paced-out tone, but in the end it turned out to be an intense, non-stop, high-octane action flick with Avengers-scale destruction and lots of glaring visuals. It's unfair to compare this to Nolan's own work so I won't do that. As a summer blockbuster chock-full of action, it delivers the goods. As a character piece, not so much. All in all, it's loads of fun and very enjoyable.

Well, I'm let down. I've been reading more mixed reviews....looks like I have to lower my expectations. So instead of a nolan-like masterpiece i was hoping for....now I'm simply looking forward to the fights, property damage, and scifi element of the story.

Couldn't agree more. As much as I love TDK and TDKR, Begins was so focused on Batman - the character - and that's what makes it the definitive Batman film. The theatrics, the ninja skills, the art of fear, the smoke pellets, summoning the bats..everything in that movie screamed classic Batman and I loved it.

You all forget one thing. The movie was fairly boring and the Villain was uninteresting. The best Comic book movies have great Villains. We all know the Hero. It's the Villain that elevates the film from good to Great.

I was close in guessing it was a 6/10.

Especially with its RT score that was below70% last time I checked. I am glad I was right all along in saying this was not going to be that great of a movie. Everyone here is blinded by Nolan producing that you looked past the fact that the idiot who has made maybe 1 good movie in his career was directing this crap.

And the writer never wrote a great movie alone. All of his good movies were co-written by better writers, and many of his solo works were simply egregious. He was a red flag from the beginning, and I had hoped early on that a better writer would have done a pass on the script.

disagree

Have to disagree about shannon. You wont be let down if you know the character of zod fairly well. In superman 2 he was played in a similar fashon as was faora, she was the more evil and sinister of the two. Personnally I gave this an 8.5 id say its better that the avengers but not as good as any of nolans knight trilogy. Best superhero film of the year easily.

I'm sorry but I have to take this guys review with a grain of salt. Anyone that has spelling mistakes and sticks a picture of a previously failed movie in a review to get his message across of the film everyone has been dying to see isn't worth listening to. Yeah I know he gave it a 7 which is good but honestly I just can't accept a 7. It's gotta be better than that surely.

I liked the flashbacks a lot, they were actually my favourite part of the film. I think they humanised Clark very effectively, and I totally bought Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Ma and Pa Kent respectively. It kind of reminded me of Martin Sheen and Sally Field in The Amazing Spider-Man. I gave this film an 8, I thought that it was a solid restart for Superman and there was nothing that stuck out as egregiously out of place, even though the final act with its barrage of loud action scenes did

The Cold Light of Day made me worry that Henry Cavill wouldn't be able to carry this film, but he did. And I felt differently from Eric in that I found Michael Shannon's Zod immensely enjoyable to watch

Not to sound cocky or naive, but with all the hype and coverage this movie has been getting, I was expecting a 9 out of 10 or even a perfect score (the latest film I remember getting a perfect score on here is Skyfall).

I'll admit I was a bit skeptical on this film at first before we saw any footage, but the movie really looks to be the ideal Man of Steel film (at least for this generation) with an all star cast. Each one of the trailers have been better than the last and haven't really

Each one of the trailers have been better than the last and haven't really spoiled anything, the score sounds great even though it's not the iconic score of the previous films, and it FINALLY looks like we get a Superman who finally uses his powers to full power and advantage.

I don't know, maybe I'm too excited and anxious to finally see this movie to think that it will be nothing but great and epic, but until then I like to think that this movie will surpass my expectations and be unlike anything I've ever seen regarding a Superman film AND a superhero film. I'm hoping that Man of Steel will finally do for Superman what the Dark Knight trilogy did for Batman. And for all of us fans, I'm hoping it more than delivers so that we can finally get a proper, developed Justice League film.

I guess we will all find out soon enough.

There had already been 2 pretty good batman movies before nolan stepped in, hell you could argue there had been 4 great batman movies before begins.

"I'm thinking - betting - the sequel will be even better, now that they've gotten all of this origin story stuff out of the way. Remind you of another Nolan-sponsered superhero..?"....Yes, The Dark Knight was better then Batman Begins, but Batman Begins was great as well.

Not sure why there is an image from Superman Returns embedded in the review... you can even see the red underwear from it. Oh well.

Being a purist and a fan of summer blockbusters, I have no doubt I'll love it.

Except Batman Begins got glowing reviews, everyone loved it, and it truly delivered a great Batman movie. Man of Steel didn't do any of that. It's a mediocre movie getting mediocre reviews, the audience is split on it, and it is a disappointing Superman movie.

Goyer has never written a great (or really even a good) movie by himself. He just sucks at it, hard. WB needs to get him away from their franchise before he seriously fucks it up like he did with Blade III.

Batman begins was good but did I loved it? No. And Goyer wrote the script to Blade 1 and 2 and the screenplay to Dark City. So he´s not all bad.

I personally think Begins is the best of Nolan's Batman.

Blade 1 & 2 didn't exactly have great scripts (plus Del Toro claims he did some tweaks to the script in the Blade II commentary). The Blade movies were kind of just mindless action flicks. Also, Goyer was only a co-writer on Dark City, and Alex Proyas wrote the initial first draft alone.

I agree with you Silverload. Batman Begins is personally my favorite film out of Nolan's trilogy and I also think it is the best out of the trilogy despite Ledgers's brilliant, once in a lifetime performance.

It's just that after two sub par Batman films (Batman Forever, Batman and Robin) we didn't just get a good Batman film, we got a GREAT Batman film that we were all waiting for.

Wow, people have got to stop using Dark City as a defense for David Goyer's awful writing. First, it was 15 years ago and, second, HE DIDN'T WRITE IT HIMSELF. This movie was mostly Alex Proyas' vision and let's not forget that Lem Dobbs also contributed to the script. By the way, it was only a year and a half ago (close enough) that Goyer brought us Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence, and he still gets credit for a movie that happened a decade and a half before it. Face it: Goyer is a bad

LOL.. BATMAN BEGINS was a good film, not a great one. I would give it a 7/10. I know it's not a great film because I never wanna watch it. But i find myself watching TDK over and over again. So if this film is as good as BEGINS I'm fine with that. It just means that the sequel will be that much better. Most PART 2's of comic (or Sci-Fi / Fantasy) films are better than the originals. It's because the damn origin tale bogs down the movie. Even IRON MAN 1, which everyone seems to love, to me was

I could'nt wait to see Mandarin on the big screen, and then they went and fucked that up, but that's another story.

I agree. Bring on Doomsday for the sequel. Hell, I'll take Brainiac over Luthor anyday.

I'd be okay with a Luthor who's main choice of evil activities isn't buying up a bunch of land. As a matter of fact I'm kind of thinking the sequel will deal with Luthor seeing Superman as the reason for the "mess" in Metropolis and he collects all the tech left by Zod to combat Superman.

Luthor and Metallo for the next one, I say save Doomsday for a Justice League movie, either the 2nd or 3rd, and replace the crappy JL from the comics with the real one, and still have him kill Superman at the end, if they do it for the second one it could make for a great 3rd JL movie
