BI:2 gets some cash
BASIC INSTINCT 2 took another step closer to finally getting before cameras this week as German film fund IMF3 ponied up the $70 million budget for the film. Sharon Stone will reprise her role as the villainous (and now elderly) Catherine Tramell in the follow-up to the 1992 beaver expose. With the cash, an actress and a director in Michael Caton-Jones, the project is gearing up but still has no start date. A sticking point seems to be finding a actor
willing to put up with to star alongside Sharon Stone. Many names, including Benjamin Bratt, were offered the role over the years but eventually were nixed by the opinionated star. That inability to cast a male lead led to John McTiernan walking off the production as director about three years ago and the film has stalled ever since. It's still unclear who swung the gold watch in front of those poor Germans eyes intoning, "you will give us your money....you WILL give us your money." MGM will distribute the film stateside but now that they have been acquired by Columbia, it's unclear how that relationship will work. Stone is set to start shooting ALPHA DOG with Justin Timberlake and Emile Hirsch early next year.
