International trailer for Taken 2 with Liam Neeson has found you!

Liam Neeson is back as Bryan Mills, the man with a "particular set of skills" in the first trailer for TAKEN 2. Co-starring Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, and Rade Serbedzija (as the main villain), the pic is directed by Olivier Megaton (COLUMBIANA) and features yet another fun-filled adventure for the Mills family, while vacationing in Istanbul.

This has all the ingredients of a high-concept sequel and I'm totally down. TAKEN was a runaway success and transitioned Neeson from his dramatic roles into that of an uber bad ass, which seems to suit him well. I know some people are a little nervous about Megaton directing the film, but this trailer looks like he did all right.

TAKEN 2 hits theaters on October 5, 2012.

Unecessary but interesting sequel

I won't lie. When I first heard about a sequel to taken I was uninterested and thought it wouldn't measure up. We obviously can't tell by now if it will but the trailer certainly looked interesting and I'm always down to see Liam Neeson kill bastards!

But come on, this movie looks a bit silly. So the mother is automatically back in love with him again? Why would they ever think of leaving the country again after what happened? How is the daughter perfectly fine after a traumatic experience like that? If any woman made if out of that experience, she would most likely be afraid to even step outside or talk to any man in public ever again, let alone leave the fucking country. It all just seems a bit silly to me.

It doesn't look as over-stylized as Transporter 3 and Columbiana, which is a damn good thing. I love the concept of the villains out for revenge. I'm so happy they made this sequel.

I was not a fan of Columbiana, but I don't know if that was because Zoe Saldana was probably the least convincing assassin or if was because the movie was written/directed poorly. Nothing about it was very memorable and I don't know if that's better or worse than if the movie had just sucked.

Anyway, I'm always down for Liam kicking ass and taking names, but I'm not thrilled his character's daughter has a bigger role this time around. It looks like they're trying to make her his apprentice

Pitch Meetings

I wouldn't be surprised if the pitch meetings for these "Liam Neeson Fucks Stuff up For 2 Hours" flicks come dangerously close to that bit from Life's Too Short:

"...that's probably why Luc Besson cast me as Bryan Mills. I said 'Luc, I kick ass ALL the time." And he said, 'that's exactly what I'm lookin' for.' As an actor, you need stuff to draw on, and I drew on that."

Brilliant

This reminds of of the old school action sequels, the ones that weren't planned franchises five years ahead of schedule. The ones that were popular, and made that shit up as they went along.
Die Hard 2, Lethal Weapon 2, Rambo 2 and now Taken 2.

So, you mean the ones that basically repeated the formulas of their predecessors? No offense - but DH2 was the worst of its franchise, and Rambo 2 defines cheese. Lethal Weapon 2 was a good sequel but you're basically praising the most derivative sequels ever...

Yep, all of those ones. The ones that had no reason to exist, but do anyway, and I for one am extremely glad they do. Sometimes you don't always want to see something try to be bigger or better, or need to expand upon the dramatic themes of the characters. Sometimes you just want to see those character carry on doing what they do, just in a new location.

Besides Die Hard 2 and Rambo 2 are awesome. Derivative, unnecessary, pointless and utterly meaningless, but damn entertaining. And saying

Nostalgia is funny in that way. DH2 got terrible reviews during its initial release apart from the rare exception (Ebert loved it, for example, but then again he disliked the first one). Die Hard 3 (which I really love) got bad reviews, too. (A few years ago it hovered around 20% on RottenTomatoes, when the 'meter' included mostly reviews from its initial release.) But DH4 received the best reviews of the franchise apart from the first one (80-something on RT and like 7.6/10 on IMDb) so apart from the "IT'S PG-13!' fanboys who are a vocal minority on the Internet, it was actually very well-received by the general public. I'm a fan of the series and although I agree that its tone is a bit different from the originals, so too was the third film very different from the first (it was originally the screenplay for Lethal Weapon 4 and they changed it into a Die Hard movie last minute) and I think if you can ignore that it doesn't have tons of vulgar language the action is well-done and choreographed, there is plenty of practical stuntwork and it's a solid, well-made action film.

DH2 was, hands down, the best sequel of the bunch. Funny, actionpacked, with great villains like Franco Nero and William Sadler and fun cameos from the DH1 regulars, which made this one felt more familiar.

Taken doesn't seem like it needs a sequel (under normal circumstances a movie like that would get a straight-to-DVD sequel with the same plot but an unknown cast), but the idea of the family of the dead kidnappers taking revenge is a great concept, and Istanbul is a gorgeous location for an action film. Also, Neeson kicking butt as well as he usually does.
