Exclusive 10-minute interview with Jean-Claude Van Damme (Part 1)

Aug. 30, 2012by: The Arrow

The Muscles from Brussels aka JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME was recently in my home town of Montreal, Canada to promote his glorious return to the big screen in THE EXPENDABLES 2. Being that I am a big Van Damme fan (you can a read a more personal account of my meeting with him here), I came into this sit-down eager to meet the man and extremely well prepared in terms of my questions (I know his career like the back of my hand). But only seconds into our meeting, Jean-Claude took over and I eventually realized that those questions I had for him were inconsequential. So I tossed them aside. This was no longer an interview but a conversation between two men that saw Jean-Claude open up big time. Spin kick Part 1 of our sit-down below and tune in tomorrow for Part 2 of this compelling face off with the action legend. THE EXPENDABLES 2 is presently playing in a theatre near you!

0:20 - JCVD discusses MMA fighter Georges St-Pierre (GSP) and his involvement with him
1:30 - JCVD discusses straight-to-DVD versus theatrical releases
2:30 - JCVD discusses his final fight vs Stallone in Expendables 2 (gets up)
3:50 - JCVD discusses the "new action heroes" today
5:30 - JCVD discusses his beginnings, how skinny he was, Bruce Lee, Laurence of Arabia... (gets up)

"People go, hey I am happy to see you back on the big screen. People told me at the mall, at the airport, hey JC when are you gonna make another film? And I go f*ck, I just made 3 straight to DVDs..."

Extra Tidbit: The Expendables 2 was Van Damme's first wide theatrical release since Universal Soldier: The Return in 1999.

This guy was my childhood hero. Bloodsport may be the first movie I ever fell in love with. Seeing Van Damme back on the big screen gives me goosebumps. Thanks for interview!

You had me at JCVD demanding his tea. Such a great interview with an intriguing personality, I hope that by some fluke I run into Van Damme when I visit Hong Kong later this year!

Action cinema is art and Van Damme is one of the best artists around. With his furious feet he paints incredible works of art. Sure, you're not getting a CITIZEN KANE level of storytelling, but you're watching art nonetheless. He seems like a really down-to-earth guy and given how revered he is by the action community, it's nice to see that.

Can't wait for Part 2. The man has so much charisma and to see him back on the big screen brought me back in time. People think the Expendables is just too much explosions and violence, but it's old stars showing this is how we did it in our day. It was downright emotional when Van Damme fought in the Expendables. I was sitting in the theare reliving my childhood and when he hit the roundhouse, I whispered out loud "Fuck Yea". I want to see him in more.

OMG...JCVD!!!

My God this brings back so many childhood memories how I cherished this man and some of the influences he has on me and so on...I still enjoy watching his DVDs and it was awesome to see him in EX2...his attitude in this interview is infectious...he still has that ego, yet genuine kid at heart feel to him...I can't say enough about this interview.

JCVD is still my hero!

Man, I love this guy! This is a great interview. Van Damme is the reason I got into martial arts. Though I've been more impressed with the technique and acrobatics of others (like Chan. Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa), Van Damme's charisma and grace still outshine most action stars. Even a lot of his straight to DVD movies have been solid (the Replicant, the Shepard, Wake of Death & the last Universal Soldier sequel). JCVD showed he is really coming into his own as an actor. I'd love to
