Interview: Priest star Karl Urban!

May. 10, 2011by: JimmyO

Its hard to imagine a cooler actor than Karl Urban. He makes one hell of an action star, with films like THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, RED and his latest PRIEST. In fact, with any role, he manages to make his characters easy to root for, whether he is the good guy or not. In Priest, he plays Black Hat, and he certainly seems to be having a great time as he takes advantage of playing a true villain. When I spoke to him, we talked about the characters influences and of course, he mentions another couple of films he has coming out called DREDD and that new STAR TREK flick.

Urban is a thrill to watch in Priest, which opens this Friday at a theatre near you.

You can tell by Urban's body language that he thinks this is a piece of shit. Thing is, if you're gonna make another piece of shit like Legion, Mr directer Scot Stewart, at least give us the gore that goes with a hard R, instead of buckling to studio pressure and editing for PG-13.

Fuck, if I want PG-13 vampires, I'll just follow the sparkles. So go suck yourself.

You do realize that Legion had a very limited budget and that the film industry in general avoids rated R movies when possible right? I don't understand blaming a director for having to play the cards he's dealt.

meh..

Wasn't this movie supposed to be released a few years ago? I kinda figured they re edited the movie, threw on some 3D after effects and just released it to see if it would make some cash. pass.

My question would be...

"Who do you consider to be the law these days?"

Great interview!

PRIEST was such a letdown to me...
It takes itself WAYYY to seriously for its own good ! Their are many shots trying to be "iconic" but what could have been good in a japanime looks plain ridiculous in (not so good) live action. The movie looks very deeply reedited (and not in a good way). The action pieces are not bad, the references to the western genre are fun and the 3D conversion is one of the best I've seen so far tough.
Still... Just MY opinion, of course...

He says "You know?" a lot...haha. But in seriousness, I really admire Karl Urban. He's humble about this stuff in interviews and takes his job seriously but at the same time doesn't seem like a stiff either. Basically he seems like he'd be cool guy to hang with, in addition to already being fun to watch on the big screen. I had no plans to see Priest in theaters...this little interview changed that.
