Iron Man 3 will actually be about Iron Man this time, plus an Avengers update

Jun. 30, 2011by: Dave Davis

A common criticism of IRON MAN 2 was that it may have been an effective prequel to THE AVENGERS, but wasn't actually a very good sequel to IRON MAN.

That won't be a problem with the third movie, which doesn't have to lay cable for a whole future of Marvel movies and can put all of its attention back on our favorite womanizing billionaire and his engineering ingenuity. In an interview with Film Journal, Marvel's main movie man Kevin Feige says: "Audiences will see that Tony Stark is going back into his own world. There will be acknowledgements to the events of THE AVENGERS and the character journey he took there, but he’s not going to be having tea with Thor and calling Nick Fury every five minutes."

Previous reports also claimed IRON MAN 3 (which already has a May 3, 2013 release date) will be more of a Tom Clancy-like techno-thriller, and more self-contained than overloaded with secondary characters. LETHAL WEAPON writer Shane Black will be behind the camera and is still at work on the story with screenwriter Drew Pearce (along with assistance from IRON MAN two-timer Jon Favreau and the wealthy super-suited hero himself, Robert Downey Jr.).

So while cameos and supporting roles in IM3 may be kept to a minimum, every familiar face in the Marvel movie universe will show up in THE AVENGERS. "We’re mimicking what comic-book publishers have been doing for years and years," explains Feige. "We’re making a big crossover event that brings all of these characters together to face something incredible and epic."

And how will it escape the same unfocused fate of IRON MAN 2? "The first step in avoiding that was hiring Joss [Whedon, writer-director]," Feige says. "If you look at his body of work, he regularly writes for lots of characters. ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ may be called ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ but it’s really an ensemble piece and none of the characters ever get lost in the spectacle of whatever is going on." (Whedon also successfully juggled numerous characters on "Angel" and "Firefly", and in his "Astonishing X-Men" comic run.)

"The stuff we’ve shot [so far on THE AVENGERS] is cutting together spectacularly and it’s just the character interactions that we’ve done so far—we haven’t shot much of the action sequences yet. I think the end result is going to feel very, very satisfying."

Extra Tidbit: If you were hoping for a peek at THE AVENGERS at San Diego Comic Con, Marvel has announced they won't be presenting anything at the show. (Unless, of course, they decide to surprise everyone...)

I don't understand the hate for Iron Man 2, I enjoyed it as much as the first one. The only bad thing i will say about it is the fight with wipelash at the end was way too short. It seems when some nerds find reasons to hate others jump on the hate train. It didn't seem to me to be a setup for the Avengers more than Thor or even the 1st one. I think the main plot had nothing to do with the Avengers. Mandarin should be the next villian or maybe even M.O.D.A.K.. They should of had Crimson Dynamo

Can we get a real Villian this time. So far he fought a bunch of variations of himself with War Mongar and Whiplash. How about Mandarin or his elementals.

I enjoyed IM2, really enjoyed it... but not the 60 second final battle.

I just hope that whoever they get as the main baddie we'll see an epic final fight scene.

Mandarin...

So... no Mandarin again? He was promised to be the villain in the FIRST film, but was only hinted at. When the hell are we going to see Stark's nemesis?!

Iron Man 2 was a live action comic book. Not a graphic novel, but a standard, juicy monthly issue of a Marvel Iron Man comic. And in those comics there are always heroes from other story arcs popping in and out. So I dug that it had Nick Fury, Black Widow, War Machine. But at the same time, I'd love for Shane Black to deliver a stand alone epic for Stark to bookend with the first film.

IM2 is underrated.

I am also one of the ppl who really liked Iron Man 2, makes me sad Jon isn't returning. I remember reading an interview with him around the time the first one came out (when he thought he might direct Avengers) saying that Iron Man was to establish the character, Iron Man 2 would come after, then after that The Avengers would basically be Iron Man 3.

Never the less, even after they announced Whedon for the Avengers, I wish they had let Favs finish his trilogy before bringing someone else on.

Officially Favreau himself decided not to return for IM3, but who knows what's true?

I had no problem at all with other characters showing up in Iron Man 2. Reminds me the comic books, which is what the movie is based on....

The whole interconnected Avengers story is a once in lifetime movie experience, so I like the fact that they were setting up the big picture. Especially if the Avengers fails at the box-office, we might never see anything this epic again.

Iron Man 2 could have been better

There are things that were forced in there to set up the Avengers such as the whole business with Stark using newsreels to get in touch with his father. Now we find out that his father was involved in the Super Soldier project. See? Things were done to service the big picture and not just to advance the plot of the film. Now if there had been a Hank Pym cameo don't think there would have been a problem because bringing in Hank Pym to cure Tony Stark's illness would have made more logical

Here, watch this old film footage.)

Thank God

Iron Man 2 was awful. I'm glad to see this actually focus on Iron Man this time instead of just an Avengers set up.

And one more thing; if you're gonna advertise AC/DC as your soundtrack, you better have more than just two fucking songs in the movie.

I can't believe...

How HORRIBLE the second film was. Tried watching it again on Netflix & couldn't get through it. Please get back to the basics & don't smug it up like the 2nd movie.
