Iron Man/Avengers news | Movie News
There was a bit of drama after the success of IRON MAN, leading to speculation that Marvel might be difficult after their first solo smash (it was the first self-produced and financed superhero film for Marvel Studios).
First they seemed aloof in securing the services of director Jon Favreau for a sequel, then came rumors that Don Cheadle might replace the assumed-to-be-returning Terrence Howard as Rhodey (and eventually War Machine).
But it looks like everything has worked out -- Favs is in, Cheadle is on, and Robert Downey Jr. will be wearing the facial hair, sharp clothes and metallic uniform of weaponsmith Tony Stark for the foreseeable future. The official word from Marvel:
As part of his four picture deal with Marvel Studios, Robert Downey Jr. is appearing as Tony Stark in THE AVENGERS motion picture, as well as reprising his starring role as the larger-than-life leading character in IRON MAN 2. Jon Favreau will return to direct the sequel to the blockbuster IRON MAN, which to date has grossed over $578 million worldwide, as well as executive produce THE AVENGERS.
Marvel Studios is pleased today to confirm that an agreement has been finalized with award-winning actor Don Cheadle to take on the role of Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in Marvel's IRON MAN 2 due in theaters on May 7, 2010. In casting Cheadle, Marvel replaces Terrence Howard who appeared in the role of Rhodey in IRON MAN. Cheadle is also signed on to perform the same role in THE AVENGERS and subsequent installments of the IRON MAN franchise.
In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.
The highly anticipated sequel to IRON MAN will be released in theatres on May 7, 2010 and THE AVENGERS will be released July 15, 2011. Both films will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

It will kill the Marvel movie universe. After having them all in one movie, you can't do single movies again.

what about ed norton? i will be up in the air if they try and recast the hulk again. Norton did a great job and because he wanted it to be the best movie it could be he might have screwed himself. We need him back and kicking ass!

So i would like to see the Avengers Battle the Hulk!! I know that most people only claim to be Marvel readers but the REAL readers know that the the Avengers originally consisted of Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk. The Hulk leaves and then they find Captain America. So the Hulk goes nuts and they find Captain and take down the Hulk. How sick would that be? I mean really without going into outer space what other Villian would give the Avengers(Thor, Iron Man, Captain, Wasp and Antman)a run for their money. Maybe Pym creates Ultron. That would be a Good Story but what about the HULK i what to see the Hulk. I think its a no brainer if they stay true to the story line.

A couple of things upset me though when reading this article; the fact that Terrenece Howard is no longer apart of the Iron Man franchise and the fact that they don't mention one SINGLE WORD OF EDWARD NORTON COMING BACK!
I loved The Incredible Hulk and it is also another one of my favorite movies of all time. It would suck if they couldn't get Edward Norton to come back as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk. Marvel needs to sign Norton up fast so that The Avengers will both have Robert Downey Jr AND Edward Norton.
Oh, and please cast Brad Pitt or Matthew Fox as Captain America.
All in all, everything sounds good. Can't wait to see footage for both of these movies.

I would like to see Dr. Doom as the villian. The comic version. With all sorts of weapons and black magic. Not the wimpy version from the FF movies.

Possible cameos: Stan Lee as the wise old hermit, and Terrence Howard as the pissed-off former star who stumbles onto the set, whiskey bottle in hand, and unleashes his berserker rage on the producers.

As for the news, this is Awesome, especially the Avengers news. This is going to be far far better than that limbo JLA movie. For the extra tidbit, don't bring in the Skrull yet. That's going to complicate things a lot. Keep it simple first. I'd go for armies of Ultron.

I think they mean the biggest foe they've ever faced in the comics, not in film. Here's hoping for Loki (Cast Paul Bettany for Loki and you're golden.)

Yea, I'm kind of peeved about them dropping Terrence Howard, especially for seemingly no reason, but I've got the confidence in Cheadle that he can pull it off. Howard didn't seem to have the force of character in the first that Rhodes commands in the comics. I don't know whether that was because he didn't have a big enough part. Only time will tell how well this works out.
