Is a Tron: Legacy sequel speeding closer to a greenlight?

Jan. 13, 2011by:

TRON: LEGACY didn't do much to wow critics. The film currently sits at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. But if sequels were greenlit based on critical response, we never would've gotten to LITTLE FOCKERS. Money is the real issue here and while TRON: LEGACY didn't set fire to the box-office like Disney have hoped, it is just shy of $300 million worldwide, which is a respectable number. And it's apparently enough to convince Disney to give TRON another go.

Ain't It Cool News is reporting that Disney is "close, incredibly close" to greenlighting and announcing a TRON: LEGACY sequel. It's surprising but not all that surprising considering that a good part of the inflated TRON budget was the development and research that went into the visual effects. Now that a good deal of that framework is set up, you'd think they could get this next film going at a somewhat reduced cost.

Not to mention that Disney has other TRONs in the fires that could benefit from another movie. There's the animated series that's set to debut on Disney XD that would be a spinoff of the film and could somehow tie into a new sequel. Plus there's videogames, toys, you name it. This is less about making a new sequel and more about creating a new franchise.

While not much is known about where another TRON film would go, it's likely to star a certain actor who made a cameo appearance in the beginning of the film.

So are you interested in a TRON: LEGACIER? What worlds do you think they could/should explore in a new film?

Extra Tidbit: I want a TRON world that's more like something from A.I. Dirty, dingy, sexy, run-down...

Yeah, I'd welcome another Tron.

But please, less exposition.

Show, don't tell.

They need a sequel to build on the potential they kept on teasing us with in Legacy. The movie rocked! I had a blast watching it... but they could've done so much more! It just seems they got lost in the Sandbox of the universe they were re-creating.

I would like to see more of the city life that was hinted at when he gave away his dad's bike (irritating) and went up to the nightclub. Also the story felt like it was going to end up being epic and it just somehow didn't. Still great fun

I really dug the creepy CG Clu, Jeff Bridges rocked and Olivis Wilde... man Olivia Wilde (Cast her as Lois Lane already)... Daft Punk!! What a sick score!!

Haha, I like the sound of it - Tron: Legacier. If they can make the visual effects look like (or better) in Tron: Legacy, I'm game. As long as they bring back Jeff Bridges and Olivia Wilde, of course.

The movie had no soul

Tron Legacy actually managed to be less technical then a movie from the 80s. I mean, it purposely distanced itself way too often (even the toys in the 80s looked like the updated version, c'mon man).

Wouldn't it that be something? The computers start thinking and the people stop. Pretty much described this sequel to a T. All flash, no substance. Good efx though.

so i guess tron legacy was far too complex for most? im reading comments here and on aint it cool news and it seems like people want it dumbed down for them... thats a shame. i loved this movie. it felt like cronenberg but more focus on the flesh being subsituted with the new digital flesh. it couldve used some blondie.

Bring it on, I loved Tron: Legacy. Hopefully Jeff Bridges and Daft Punk will return in some fashion.

You know what, why the hell not. It seems like a good fit for a sequel, and it was pretty fucking beautiful to look at, even if the story was kinda meh.

Besides, Cillian Murphy in a villain role? I'm in.

Bad idea. But only because the next one shouldn't come out until 2038.

"While not much is known about where another TRON film would go, it's likely to star a certain actor who made a cameo appearance in the beginning of the film. "

Is that who they're referring to? Cillian Murphy? And if so, how can they expand on his character? What would you do with his character in a sequel?

Trying to avenge his father? It's kind of an open ended question you're asking. They go inside a computer where "programs" are people - given that liberal amount of make-believe in the premise alone, I think they can think something up.

I'm down

Tron was fun and they definitely set it up for a sequel anyway. You dont cast Cillian Murphy in a bit part. They were setting it up for sequels all along.

I certainly wouldnt mind if disney decided to make a tron rollercoaster. They could use a new ride to combat with harry potter at IOA.

Sark+MCP

I hope they explain that Dilinger and the MCP are the reason the ISO's were created and also had a hand in corrupting CLU. Bring back the grid bugs and trails of light behind the identity disks.

Cool

I loved the 2nd one so much. Everybody's bitchin bout the plot. It's freaking tron. It doesn't need a plot. Did avatar have a plot. I don't think so. Not much as tron did. Did the first tron have a plot, hmmmm... But people who bitch about a plot anyways are dumb. Every movie has a plot it's what builds a movie. Sometimes the plot is really paper thin or not really there. but there still has to be one. AND I LOVED THE plot of tron 2. I loved everything about it. And I will be the first to say

I dunno, man. Avatar was visually and emotionally involving. You say it has no storyline, but it actually has a simplistic storyline. Whereas Tron: Legacy has a convoluted storyline and can only be enjoyed as a cool ride.

For the sequel I'd like to see those programs and battle vehicles invade the real world like The Uncanny Valley Dude wanted them to.

I think Tron Legacy's plot was pretty straight-forward. So was Avatar's, but Avatar's was a rip-off of Dances with Wolves (tell me how it's not). The idea of Clu rebelling against Flynn was pretty cool. I liked Tron Legacy a hell of a lot more than Avatar. Avatar has amazing special effects, but unfortunately they were put to poor use - they made a computer generated environment look eerily like a man-made tacky set.

Nice. I say bring on TR3N. I enjoyed the hell out of Tron: Legacy far more than I had expected. I actually think the critics shat on way to hard. It's not a perfect film by any means but I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as critics said it was.

I liked Legacy. It's heavily flawed, but still fun and enjoyable. If they can drop the budget on the next one and get a better script, this could be a great franchise.

Extra Tidbit: If they did that, it wouldn't be the world that was created.....the grid is the grid.

Also, AH, SPOILERS:

It's is never shown that Tron is dead....you didn't see him disintergrate. He could still come back, he's a freaking program.

As I'm cool with a sequel (I'm apparently one of the few that was truly blown away by Legacy), where do you go from here?

**SPOILERS AHEAD***

I mean, they killed off both Bridges' characters, Tron and pretty much the entire Grid in the last one. Unless it's really well written this time around and doesn't use the same plot devices (a.k.a Bridges contacting his son AGAIN to come and join him on another Grid of some sorts), I remain skeptical on the project's usefulness to the TRON universe

Actually, I took that as a "becoming good again" the seconds before his death. Though not showing him de-rez was kinda weird, so I guess they're teasing him not being dead.

But in some way, I have trouble believing he survived that fall...

Cool. I hope it takes up right where Legacy left off. As Sam discovers Quorra has a USB port instead of a vagina.
